This Week’s Highlights…
What is Christian Life School @Play?
Contents
The Christian Life girls basketball team is back on the floor, honing its craft in eager anticipation of the 2011-12 campaign, which is right around the corner. The Eagles open play with one of four non-confer-ence clashes on Tuesday, Nov. 29, when Hope School pays a visit to the Christian Life gymnasium for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.
Leading up to that date, the team is hard at practice. Head coach Alan Krass begins his second season at the helm after jumping over from the boys basketball program. As you can imagine, it was quite an adjustment for the Eagles mentor to shift his focus from coaching boys to coaching the girls squad.
“I’ve been on the boys side for eight years,” said Krass. “There’s a lot of dif-ference as far as coaching the team goes. It starts from the way the game it-self is played. For example, if there are only a few sec-onds left in a half and you have the ball at half-court, a girl usually is not strong enough to throw the ball all the way down there. The speed of the game itself is
much different, but it was an enjoy-able experience last year.”
Krass’ success was transfused into the girls program. The Eagles logged an overall record of 16-7 in 2010-11 and finished third in the North Division of the Midwest Clas-sic Conference with a solid 10-4 mark.
The league itself will change this year and in the following year. This season, Christian Life moves to the
South Division, which is projected to be much tougher than the North. Then in 2012-13, the Midwest Clas-sic Conference as we know it will be completely restructured, undergo-ing a permanent split. Stay tuned.
The Eagles have two returning seniors who will allow Christian Life to compete at a high level in the South Division. Brianna Tennyson, a 5-foot-8 forward, returns to the starting lineup, as does Haley John-
son, a 5-7 guard.
“Brianna is the best female athlete our school has ever had,” said Krass matter-of-factly. “She will likely play softball in college, but she is good at vol-leyball and basketball, too. She shoots the ball well, can get to the free throw line and makes her free throws once she gets there. She’s also our leading rebounder.”
Tennyson comes into the season hav-ing scored 841 career points. She will likely break the school scoring record in mid-season, not to mention eclipse the coveted 1,000-point mark. Tennyson aver-aged a staggering 19 points per game last season (keeping in mind Brie Tennyson drives the baseline.

the high school game is only 32 minutes of play).
Johnson will leave Chris-tian Life after this school year as one of the top players in school history. She ranks sixth on the Eagles’ all-time scoring list and looks to move up in rank before her career ends in March. Johnson aver-aged 16.6 points per game a season ago and is the team’s top three-point shooter.
The other returning starter is Vicky Rivera, a 5-3 junior guard. She is one of four guards projected to start this season.
“My question mark is our depth and size,” admitted Krass. “When you start four guards because of our lack of size, rebounding is a concern.
The plan is to get up and down the court, but you have to be able to rebound to do that.”
Four key players are being counted on for significant min-utes. They include 5-4 senior guard Sabrina Fleck, 5-7 junior guard Kalia Duncan, 5-6 junior guard Avonlea Kisner and 5-9 sophomore center Anna Tajnai.
“We will play tough defense and look to shoot a lot of perimeter shots,” forecasted Krass. “People said we were fun to watch last year and I expect more of the same this year. We have good athletes and I’m going to let them get out and run.”
The Midwest Classic Confer-ence season for the Eagles opens Tuesday, Dec. 13, with a game at Racine Prairie.Haley Johnson shoots from behind the arc.

The Christian Life girls varsity basketball team is undergo-ing preparations for its 2011-12 opener Tuesday, Nov. 29, when Hope School visits the Christian Life gymnasium for a 7:30 p.m. showdown. “We will play tough defense and look to shoot a lot of perimeter shots,” forecasted head coach Alan Krass. “People said we were fun to watch last year and I expect more of the same this year. We have good athletes and I’m going to let them get out and run.” The Eagles have two returning seniors who will allow Christian Life to compete at a high level in the South Division of the Midwest Classic Conference. Brianna Ten-nyson, a 5-foot-8 forward, returns to the starting lineup, as does Haley Johnson, a 5-7 guard. Tennyson averaged 19 points per game last season and is on pace to break the career scoring record at CLS. Johnson averaged 16.6 points per game a season ago and is the team’s top three-point weapon.

Boys varsity head coach Steve Powell is hoping that his team’s speed and quickness will be enough to offset the size advantage that many of the Eagles’ opponents will have in 2011-12. “We lack the size to control the boards, so post play will be a problem,” he said. “Quickness and defense will be our strengths. We plan to play a transi-tion type game and an ‘in your face’ defense.” Returning letter-winners are forwards Dan Rozema and Matthew Pitt, and guards Sam Brekke, Pierson Kaye and Jon Metz. Others who could see plenty of action are Sean Taylor and Melvin Pitt. Powell said that the Eagles’ schedule is the toughest the school has had and lists St. Catherine’s, Racine Lutheran and Shoreland Lutheran as the teams to beat in the Midwest Classic Conference.

The wrestling team – now officially a varsity squad af-ter having spent its inaugural season as a junior varsity group – began practice on Nov. 14. Co-coach Tim Pinter will have between 20 and 30 wrestlers participating this season, taking on a number of Division I opponents. “Normally, it would take a school three years to phase in a new varsity sport,” Pinter said. “We’re taking on a large challenge.” Practices are already different than they were last season. The coaches who spent most of their time teaching the basics last year are now able to focus on technique and advanced moves. Returning starters in-cludes Josh Crouse (152 pounds), Paul Hammond (195), Conner Moon (138), Eli Ramsey (220), Remington Svatek (113), Brett Tennyson (145), Tyler Tennyson (106), Ethan Town (113) and Ryan Zierk (145).
