We have stories from the various waves of emigration from the 1700s with emigrants to Americaarriving as indentured servants through to the assisted emigration of the1850s and reflecting on the undocumented and emigration problems oftoday in the United States. We have stories of Kenmare people whosettled and whose families would rise through society to become teachers, successful business men, politicians and others who would fight and diefor their adopted country from wars of independence and civil wars towars on the world stage and even involvement with the French Resistancein Paris in 1944.

The waves of emigration from Kenmare over the centuries have beenspurred by unrest and conflict, famines and land clearances, unemployment and the search for a better life. Also for some it was awanderlust, a desire to see more of the world. There will be nearly fifty stories in the publication, so will be an idealChristmas present for friends and relations both at home and abroad.Plenty to read!

Eat more fibre! You have probably heard it before. But do you know whyfibre is so good for your health? Dietary fibre - found mainly in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes – is probably best known for itsability to prevent or relieve constipation. But foods containing fibre canprovide other health benefits as well, such as helping to maintain ahealthy weight and lowering your risk of diabetes and heart disease. However, many people don't get enough fibre. On average, most peopleget about 14g of fibre a day. You should aim for at least 30g a day.Children should eat between 15 and 30g of fibre daily dependant on age.Fibre is only found in foods that come from plants. Foods such as meat, fish and dairy products don't contain any fibre. There are two differenttypes of fibre – soluble (it dissolves in water) and insoluble (it doesn'tdissolve). Each type of fibre helps your body in different ways, so anormal healthy diet should contain both types. Soluble fibre can bedigested by your body. It helps to reduce the amount of cholesterol in yourblood. If you have constipation, gradually increasing sources of solublefibre can help soften your stools and make them easier to pass. Also, itmay slow digestion and absorption of carbohydrates and hence lower therise in blood glucose that follows a meal (postprandial) and insulinresponse. This can help people with diabetes improve control their bloodglucose levels.Foods that contain soluble fibre include oats, barley, rye, fruit such asbananas and apples, root vegetables such as carrots and potatoes andgolden linseeds. Insoluble fibre cannot be digested. It passes through yourgut without being broken down and helps other foods move through yourdigestive system more easily. Insoluble fibre keeps your bowels healthyand helps prevent digestive problems This effect is enhanced when youalso increase your water intake to about 8 glasses daily. Good sources of insoluble fibre include wholemeal bread, bran, cereals, nuts and seeds. Most plant-based foods, such as oatmeal and beans, contain both soluble and insoluble fibre. However, the amount of eachtype varies in different plant foods. To receive the greatest health benefits, eat a wide variety of high-fibre foods.Apart from the health benefits mentioned above - lowering cholesteroland postprandial glucose levels and improving digestion - a diet high infibre may help you in achieving a healthy weight. Foods rich in fibregenerally require more chewing time, which gives your body time toregister when you're no longer hungry, so you are less likely to overeat. Also, a high-fibre diet tends to make a meal feel larger and linger longer,so you stay full for a greater amount of time. And high-fibre diets alsotend to be less “energy-dense”, which means they have fewer calories forthe same volume of food. Another benefit attributed to dietary fibre is theprevention of colorectal cancer. All in all high-fibre foods are good foryour health. But adding too much fibre too quickly can promote intestinalgas, abdominal bloating and cramping. Increase fibre in your dietgradually over a period of a few weeks. This allows the natural bacteria inyour digestive system to adjust to the change. Also, if you have a digestive disorder such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome(IBS) or Diverticulitis, you may need to modify the type and amount offibre in your diet in accordance with your symptoms. Your GP or adietician can advise you further on this. If you wish to know more abouthigh-fibre foods and their benefits, please ring us on 064-6679880 or callinto McSweeney Pharmacy Kenmare and we will be more than happy toanswer any query you may have.

Following my request, HSE agrees to meeting with Kerry publicrepresentatives on issue of short stay and respite beds in Kerrycommunity hospitals. On the 9th of July I questioned the Minister for Health Leo Varadkar in theSenate on the the large number of vacant and unused beds in thecommunity Hospitals through out Kerry, telling the Minister 'there is anurgent and real need for these beds to be put into use... there are manypatients who are in Tralee General and other hospitals in Cork andLimerick who should be and would prefer to be looked after closer tohome. These patients would like to be closer to their families in ourexcellent community hospitals but the minister has failed to allocate thefunds to hire the extra staff required. A small allocation of extra fundswould allow the vacant beds in Kenmare, Caherciveen, Dingle, KillarneyTralee and Listowel to be filled. In his reply during the debate in July theMinister for Health said that a final report on the bed requirements atcommunity hospital in Kerry would be completed and available shortly. I look forward to this happening as soon as possible.

REGRET.IE, the national support group forgirls injured by the HPV vaccine ‘Gardasil’has launched a national appeal to parents tosign up to a new register. The support group compiling the register has

already identified over 50 Irish schoolgirlsexperiencing serious life-changing healthproblems after receiving the shot during theschools HPV vaccination campaign. The REGRET.IE parents see similar

symptoms in their daughters to those suffered byteenage girls in other countries where thevaccine has been introduced. These damagingadverse reactions are now also beinginvestigated by health and regulatory authoritiesin these countries.“We firmly believe there is a link between the

HPV vaccine Gardasil and the experience of ourdaughters who now try to cope with these lifechanging illnesses” said spokesmum KivaMurphy.“More and more parents are contacting us

every week. We now want to inform theDepartments of Health, Education and the HSEabout the extent of these previously unidentifiedhealth problems and get support for ourdaughters” she said.“We are asking parents in this and every

county nationwide to contact us if their daughterhas any of the problems associated with thisvaccination. We know of 52 cases to date, butwe believe that once parents make the link therewill be dozens more”.

“We can be contacted through our websiteREGRET.IE, the shop window for our supportgroup. Our aim is to get help for our girls, toraise public awareness and to seek an immediateinvestigation into the side effects of this drug bythe HSE” she added. The REGRET.IE parents point to the example

of Denmark where health authorities have set upa specialist research unit to clinically evaluategirls experiencing suspected side effects such asPOTS, seizures and cognitive dysfunction.

Based on the results of their investigation theyhave asked the EMA to carry out a larger safetystudy on the HPV vaccine. The EuropeanMedicines Agency began this review 2 weeksago and it will run until May 2016.In Ireland, as in many other counties, thesesymptoms may take days, weeks or months tomanifest, and many of the teenagers have had torestrict their attendance or drop out of schoolcompletely because they continuously sufferfrom:Persistent headaches, sore throats, joint and/or

muscle pains, memory impairment, menstrualproblems, seizures, auto immune illnesses, chronic fatigue, depression and psychiatricillness, other unexplained illnesses.REGRET.IE notes that although no direct linkhas so far been definitively proven between anyspecific illness and this vaccine, the medicalliterature is reporting mounting evidence on theneurotoxic effects of certain ingredients used inthe vaccine (for example aluminiumnanoparticles). The experience of these schoolgirls in Ireland

demands full disclosure of potential risks whenrequesting parental consent to HPV vaccination. If your child has suffered health issues thatyou think may have been triggered byGardasil, and you wish to get in contact withother parents who have had a similarexperience, please contact Aengus O’Leary,Rathmore on 087 2512272 or [email protected]

People can be very funny, not in a funny ha ha way but in adangerous way. A fellow I know of was determined to win at all costsevery fishing competition he entered.

Even though he was a very good angler he still cheated his way to thetop presenting fish he had previously caught with the ones caught in thecompetition. Of course eventually the officers and members of the clubgot suspicious and the close inspection of trout being weighed in at theend of the day revealed the true state of affairs and a decision was madethere and then to disqualify him. That was fine and matters might haverested so but, and there is always a but, that night in the local pub a fewof the club members could not resist poking fun at him over hisdisqualification. He left in a temper and the next day hoisted his sails andvisited a local solicitor who took the club officers to court for libel of hisclient. Here is the catch, you and I would assume that he had no leg tostand on being caught red-handed with the stale face and all, but the lawbe funny to. The judge asked the club officers and the weigh master if anyof them had proof of competence or degrees in fish biology, none of themhad. The fact that nearly all anglers could tell you the difference betweena stale fish and a fresh fish, if you will pardon the pun, held no water forthe judge. He found the club guilty of libel and fined them heavily. Theydid not have money, let alone to pay for their own defence, not to mindanything else. Luckily all the clubs in the country chipped in to save theday. Now if you enter a fishing competition you have to agree that theweigh masters decision is final.

When we were young late Summer evenings up The Roughty fishing

for Seatrout was the place to be, but again you had an awkward personwho made the fishing miserable. Even though he was an angler himselfhe would put his sheep dog swimming around the pools, spoiling thewater for both himself and others. Maybe he was just happy on his ownbut there was plenty of room for everyone to fish comfortably so whoknows why he did it?

Another angler I knew loved to be Mr. Best, he was a very goodfisherman but again there are times when the best of us could not catchfish. Up in the west of Ireland until recent times you could buy wildbrown trout in the local supermarkets. That is what he would do, then onarriving home he would give them away free to friends and neighboursletting on that he had a great catch of fish up the west or wherever. I evenheard he did it with salmon. It must have cost him a small fortune keepingup appearances. As I said people can be funny.

Like Basil Fawlty not mentioning the war, I should do the same aboutthe fishing. What a joke!

It must be the worst salmon and sea trout season to date in livingmemory, and must be more to this than just human activity. In spite ofeverything there are still remote and hard to reach places around Kenmareall the time. Yet the little streams have no small trout, the unspoiled moorsand patchy meadows have no grasshoppers and few if any butterflies.Where have all the frogs gone and the hedgehogs who used to keep mylawn slug free? Even earthworms are difficult to find.

It grieves me to think of the world we are passing on to futuregenerations. The good news is that sea fishing, not the best earlier in theyear, has really picked up with reasonable catches of mackerel, pollockand, again at the mouth of the bay, fine cod, ling and skate.

The only blackspot is the bass fishing which is poor. The brown andrainbow trout fishing is fair to middling with some visitors catchingrespectable amounts of both. It is amazing how catching a few fish canput tourists in good form and vowing to return to catch some more nextyear.

Do not forget the last competitions of the year by theKenmare Trout Anglers Club. The Clonee boatcompetition, and the Uragh and Gleninchiquin LakeShore.

Kenmare & District Garden Club34 members spent a very interesting evening with Helen Dillon on Thursday, 3rd September when she attempted to finish off the year in hergarden in Dublin. We did reach September at least and she had us alllaughing with her little jokes and anecdotes. On a serious note, she gavesome very sound advice about plants and planting methods and one noticeable remark was that if you have a small garden, don‘t necessarilythink small but plant a big tree for dramatic effect. For anyone who hasseen her garden, she certainly practises what she preaches! A veryenjoyable evening. Our next meeting will be at 7.30 p.m. at Gateway on Thursday, 8th

Criminal Justice burgarly of dwellings bill 2015I welcome the publication of the new bill which is coming before theDail. The purpose to this bill is to address issues relating to bail andsentencing for prolific burglars of dwellings. It is ironic that thisGovernment and the Councillors and TD’s who support them closedmany of our Garda Stations not just in Kerry but around the Country. They admit now that this has led to a dramatic increase in particular inrural crime and burglaries. In response to this and in an effort to try to beseen to do something they are bringing this bill before the house. Iwelcome the bill but it would actually make more sense to open ourGarda Stations and put more Guards on duty.

Fampyra DrugFor sufferers of MS the drug Fampyra will be a name very familiar tothem and as some of you may be aware that I have been campaigningdiligently over the last number of years with regard to getting the drugFampyra onto the list of eligible drugs under the HSE. It is a veryexpensive drug for any individual to be able to afford themselves so aftermy continuous lobbying the Government referred the matter to acommission for further examination, I am now seeking an assurance fromthe Minister that the drug will be included on the list when it is updated atthe start of October which will be great news for all Multiple Sclerosissufferers.

Funding for roads in KerryI was delighted with the announcement of funding for four Kerry roadprojects recentlyMinister for Transport Pascal Donohoe announced a national package

of funding worth 10 million euro for schemes across the country with fourKerry roads included in this announcement which accounts for a third ofthe projects to receive Government support in this funding. Two projects on the N70 in south Kerry are set to benefit from the

announcement with half a million euro earmarked for the Killorglin SouthPavement works extension programme and 300,000 euro is being givenfor pavement works in Sneem East.Another half a million euro is being allocated for pavement renewal at

Corrmaree Bridge on the N22 while in North Kerry 400,000 will be madeavailable for the N69 at Tarbert towards the county bounds for pavementstrengtheningThis is a great announcement for all the above area with works on the

schemes to begin this year

KLAWSThe Law has changed and will affect everydog owner. Micro-chipping your dog becamelaw in Ireland at the end of 2015. Thousandsof stray dogs are destroyed in Irish dogpounds every year because their owner cannot be traced. A microchip is a tiny computer chip which has a 15 digit identification number programmed into it.The whole device is small enough to fit inside a needle and can be simply injectedunder the skin of your dog, where it will stayfor the life of the animal. This process doesnot hurt the dog in any way. This provides apermanent identification which cannot belost, altered or intentionally removed – asafe, simple and inexpensive way to protectyour dog against loss. When your dog is implanted with a microchip it is essentialthat you register their details to a suitabledatabase. The vet or nurse who implantsyour dog with a microchip should supplyyou with a registration form for a database. If you are unclear about whether your dog’smicrochip details have been correctlyregistered check with your local vet. Amicrochip that is not registered with yourdetails to an easily accessible database suchas ‘fido.ie’ means that if the dog if pickedup, without the registered details he cannotbe reunited with his owner. Also pleaseremember to put a dog tag on the collar;another easy, simple way to get your dogback. Just to remind you all, please callKLAWS on 087 970 4480 if you have anyissues about animal welfare and re-homingunwanted pets, and we will do our best tohelp you.

And finally thank you to ‘Something Crafty’in Rock Street for their kind donation of €30

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce‘The Light Room’.We are located just above Jam at no. 6 HenryStreet, top floor. My name is Maeve Kelly and along with LouiseDillon we are your hosts.

I offer Reiki Healing treatments. What is Reiki? Weare all made of life force energy and at times thisenergy flow can be interrupted due to negativity, belief patterns and illness. Thus we feel low, tired, lethargic, and anxious which can develop intoillness. Reiki meaning spiritual life force energy itis a gentle hands on treatment that realigns this lifeforce energy flow once more and assists the healingprocess.

The therapy originated in Japan. Its founderMikao Usui practiced his therapy in Tokyo from1922 starting a healing society called Usui ReikiRyoho Gakkai (Usui Reiki Healing MethodSociety).

I have built up my practice over many yearsgiving Reiki and Divine Light Healing treatments.I am here to offer a supportive healing treatment onyour life path.

One of my clients has said, “Maeve's Reikitreatment has been like a holistic Valium. I am soaware of how much more chilled out I am sincestarting my sessions with her no more jelly on theinside, calm outside feelings. If you are under

pressure in any form, physically, mentally, emotionally I cannot recommend a treatment withher highly enough.... her hands definitely heal.”

Louise Dillon. Family mentor & Facilitator. The approach that Louise takes is one of a co-creational nature meaning working alongside theindividual encouraging, supporting and listeningfor what is said and unsaid.

How children see themselves strongly influencestheir academic progress. Dr. Humphreys makes itclear that, without attention to children’s self-esteem and inner conflicts, it is unlikely thatattempts to increase children’s educational effortswill be successful.

Louise can offer a program where young peopleare supported in coming to a place to realise theirown individual potential. A safe confidential spaceis created allowing for self-expression.“I believe that the emotional welfare of children isthe cornerstone of their education. The future of ourchildren rests not with them but with us the adults.” Louise will be teaching three courses this autumn.Effective parenting of self and your children atKenmare Family CentreTeenagers sometimes wild always wise at KenmareFamily CentreRealise your potential at Kenmare Adult EducationCentre

Credit Unions offer savings on student loansWith the latest round of CAO offers out, many parents are nowconsidering their finance options when sending their children to college. Arecent survey released from the Irish League of Credit Unions (ILCU)stated that approximately six-out-of-10 parents get into debt to covercollege costs.

A loan from one of main banks in Ireland can cost over €2,000 morethan a credit unions loan (Source: ILCU). ILCU recommends that youconsider all your student financing options before choosing which lenderis best.

“In Killarney Credit Union, we are very aware of the growing costs inthird level sector, especially in light of increasing rental costs in manytowns and cities for students. We offer a competitive rate of 6.2% APReducation loan to help support parents and students in this regard. We arein fact, the cheapest for credit, among all the main lenders” stated MarkMurphy, Manager, Killarney Credit Union.

If a student were borrowing €11,000 over a 5 year term, of the highstreet banks. BoI charges 7.5pc interest on a personal loan of €11,000 -which is €2,148 in interest over five years. Next in line is AIB, whichcharges 8.73pc interest on a parent student finance loan. At that rate, itwill cost €2,509 over five years to borrow €11,000. Killarney CreditUnion is more than €400.00 cheaper in interest than the main banks. The most expensive banks to borrow €11,000 from are KBC Bank,Permanent TSB and Ulster Bank. KBC charges 12.7pc interest on a loanof €11,000 (unless you qualify for its discounted rate of 10.5pc).Borrowing €11,000 over five years at an interest rate of 12.7pc will costyou €3,687 in interest - almost €1,540 more than BoI.

Permanent TSB charges 12.5pc interest on a standard personal loan of€11,000 - which will cost you €3,614 over five years. Permanent TSBalso offers cash secured loans with an interest rate of 7.1pc - but you canonly get this rate if your entire loan is secured on savings which you hold.Ulster Bank charges 12.3pc on its fixed rate parental student loan - thiswill cost you €3,569 on borrowings of €11,000. (Source: IrishIndependent Business).

Killarney Credit Union is by far the cheapest option for educationallending with a rate of 6.2% APR with interest of €1,732.20 over the 5year term for a loan of €11,000.

In addition, to offering competitive loan rates, Killarney Credit Union isoffering an educational bursary of €1,000 to 4 lucky students who areentering 3rd level for the first time. Applicants must be members of thecredit union and the closing date for applications is Friday 25thSeptember. Application forms are available from www.killarneycu.ie.

GARDENING in Autumn, the Willowfield Way !Needless to say, we didn’t get much of a summerthis year ! A good dry sunny spell in earlySeptember did try and make up for it but the actualair temperature was fairly cool even though it wasnice and warm in the direct sunshine. But all thathad to come to an end and promises of an IndianSummer has gone as well. The constant ample supply of rainfall during thesummer did provide plants with ideal growingconditions even though some flowers did sufferfrom being constantly wet, going soggy andmouldy fairly quickly. A lot of trees put on extragrowth which might get damaged once the autumnstorms start rolling in off the Atlantic in the wildway that they do ! So, before that happens let’s seewhat has to be done in the garden…1.Prepare the LAWN ready for the winter. In anydry spell between now and the end of October cutthe grass on a low setting to even off the grass andremove any tufts of moss. Apply an autumnfertilizer or if you are early enough a feed/mossand weedkiller will help. Frequent mowing at thistime of the year helps to remove fallen leaves thatcan suffocate the grass underneath if not removed.Depending on the density, individual broadleafweeds like thistles, plantains, dandelions andcoltsfoot in the lawn can be pulled up , roots andall, so grass can grow back again in the spot theywere taking over. If too many to handle a selectiveweedkiller should be used.2.TREES around the garden need to be checkedover to make sure newly planted ones are wellsecured and will not fall over in the first storm.Older trees with extra big leaf canopies aftersummers growth may take a beating early on in theAutumn so watch out for breaking branches thatmay need pruning back.3. Some SHRUBS are still performing well andwill keep on going until first frosts. TheHydrangea especially is flowering away andputting on a great display. The white, cone shaped,

paniculata types are very vigorous and their coneshaped panicles are a complete contrast to the mopheads and lace caps of the regular Hydrangea. ForAutumn displays these would rank up at the top ofmost reliable and easily grown shrubs. Also a goodcontrast for the common Buddleia. The Autumn isalso a good time for planting new shrubs in yourgarden as they can settle down in their newsurroundings during the quiet autumn and wintermonths so they are ready to burst into growth nextspring. It is still too early to start pruning yourshrubs so let them enjoy the rest of the growingseason ! Come and check out our Autumn stock ofplants at Willowfield.4.Many Perennials and HERBACEOUS plantshave reached their prime at the moment and willbegin to fade away for their winter’s sleep ! Again,it’s a bit early for cutting them back so just focuson supporting flowering stems with some canes tokeep them from being flattened by wind and rain. The taller type of Sedum, S. spectable, is justcoming into flower now and is very popular inattracting butterflies.5. HEATHERS are flowering away in full bloomat the moment and are a great addition to anygarden. These summer/autumn flowering varietiesof Calluna need an acid soil (peaty) so just makesure you use an Ericaceous compost when plantingup. Most of the garden soil around Kenmare isacidic so should be no problem planting in thegarden. The winter flowering Erica are moretolerant of soil acidity. Heathers can also be

planted in window boxes, patio containers andeven hanging baskets for a good splash of Autumncolour.6.If your PATIO CONTAINERS are getting a bittired looking, the winter Pansy and Violas are nowavailable for planting up. These will give colourthroughout the winter but need to be planted upsoon so they can put on a bit of growth before anycold weather comes. Mini Cyclamen can also beused to brighten up containers. Small conifers, trailing ivy, silver dust and spring flowering bulbscan all be added. For a one hit wonder, the largeGarden ‘Mum’ will fill a pot all on its own andlook good for several weeks…instant gardening !7. SPRING FLOWERING BULBS can be plantedfrom now until the end of November in the groundor in patio containers. There are dwarf varieties ofTulips and small flowering Narcissii which areideal for the patio containers and the moretraditional ’Golden Harvest’ Daffodils and‘Apeldorn’ Tulips are best planted in the ground.Crocus and Hyacinth can also be planted to extendthe flowering season from late January through toApril.8. It’s Harvest time in the VEGE garden andremember to clear away finished crops to keep thegarden tidy and remove sanctuary for slugs andother bugs !. Digging in seaweed and well-rottedmanure can take place from now on so as to beready for next spring. Pick any apples from nowon until mid October or before high winds areforecasted, and store in boxes between sheets ofnewspaper. Fallen apples should be eaten first orcooked as their keeping quality will be diminisheddue to bruising on falling from the tree. Watch outfor wasps ! They are rather grumpy and nasty atthis time of the year !So, plenty to do. Make the most of any dryweather as winter is coming and the evenings aregetting shorter. Also, the Rugby World Cup in onas well ! Happy Gardening !

Kenmare found themselvesdown by 2 goals at half time but got 1 back in the first 10 minutes of the2nd half. Unfortunately they were not able to score again but had over 30shots on target on the night. A big thank you to all the lads who haveplayed with this team all year and at least 6 or 7 of them will be in Mr JohnHolland (the senior manager’s) plans in the coming season.

Quiz NightWe will be holding our first quiz night on Friday October 23rd in PF Mc-Carthy's at 8.30pm. €40 per team of 4.

Competition As this is the 30th anniversary of the club, here is one of the first photos ofthe club team.

To commemorate his memory hisgrieving family presented the Denis O'Sullivan Morgan Memorial Cup tothe South Kerry Hurling Board for the Senior League competition. AustinStacks were the first winners of the cup and fittingly his club, Kenmare, won the competition in 1992. Other South Kerry clubs won it in thefollowing years. The Nissan X-Trail is likely to appeal to a broaderselection of buyers, and it continues Nissan’s finerun of recent form in building family-friendlycrossovers. It looks well capable of challengingrivals such as the Ford Kuga and Honda CR-V,while the seven-seat option means it’s a viablealternative to the Hyundai Santa Fe. The X-Trail is no entertainer, but it’s easy to

drive for such a bulky machine, thanks to lightsteering, an unobtrusive six-peed manual gearboxand a raft of safety tech. Nissan wants to offer acommercially viable, fully autonomous car by2020, and the X-Trail benefits from some of thatburgeoning technology. ‘Active Trace Control’constantly monitors your speed and steeringinput, trimming your line through a corner if thecar senses you’re going to run wide, rather thancutting in with juddering traction control once thecar has lost grip. Active Ride Control appears too, using subtle engine braking to reduce oscillationsover particularly bumpy roads, or over urbanspeed humps. The 1.6 dCi engine develops320Nm of torque – exactly the same as the old X-Trail’s 2.0-litre diesel. As a result, it’s just aspunchy, but thanks to the smaller capacity, stop-start and a 90kg weight saving, the new X-Trial is20% more efficient. On the road, the X-Trail gathers adequate pace,

but given this car hints at tough-terrain ability andcan be offered as a seven-seater, we’d sacrifice alittle of that fuel-sipping attitude for some more

load-lugging grunt. Downsizing from 2.0-litre to 1.6-litre power

pays dividends at the pumps for the X-Trail,which can return a claimed 57.6mpg in its mostefficient two-wheel drive manual form. That onlydrops to 53.3mpg for the all-wheel drive model.Take a passing glance at the Nissan X-Trail and

you might initially mistake it for its little brother, the Qashqai. However, the X-Trail is a full100mm longer, as well as being wider and taller, and while the corporate nose is largely the sameas the Qashqai’s the rounded rear is significantlydifferent. The ‘Qashqai XL’ styling creates a clear link

between the two, and is clearly aimed at pullingin buyers easily won over by a sharper new suit.Nissan’s given the car its own LED running light‘signature’ at the front, while the boldwheelarches are supposed to hint at Nissan’srugged 4x4 heritage. Entry-level X-Trail Visia models come on

small 17-inch alloys, and the car looks muchmore purposeful and well proportioned in higher-spec n-tec or Tekna guises. These moregenerously equipped versions wear 19-inch rims,as well as a wealth of toys inside.Owners of the old X-Trail won’t recognise the

new one from the inside, but Qashqai owners willfeel right at home. The layout is identical to theQashqai’s, exhibiting quality soft-touch materialsand excellent fit and finish. On X-Trail Teknas,

the dashboard is dominated by a seven-inchtouchscreen interface, called ‘NissanConnect’.As well as controlling all the usual navigation

and entertainment commands, it allows occupantsto access their social media accounts on the move, and makes parking a doddle with the ‘AroundView Monitor’ camera system. This uses camerasin the nose, tailgate and both door mirrors tocreate a birds-eye view of the X-Trail. On first impressions, the X-Trail makes a great

case for itself as a family car. Thanks to an all-new platform co-developed with Renault, and a76mm wheelbase stretch versus the outgoingversion, the X-Trail has the most legroom in itsclass, and the rear doors open outward by morethan 80 degrees. The rows of seating are arranged in a tieredtheatre-style system, where every row sits a littlehigher than the one in front, for better visibility. This doesn’t come at the expensive of headroom, though, as there’s plenty of space in the backseats. The new X-Trail has plenty of safety tech in its

arsenal, including liberal usage of high-strengthsteel in the bodyshell, plus the Nissan ‘SafetyShield’, which incorporates emergency citybraking and lane-departure warning systems. Allof this meant a strong five-star Euro NCAP ratingfor safety in 2014.

The Nissan X-Trail appeal
