Keeping Pace IML WALKING ASSOCIATION

Welcome to the fifth edition of the IML, Walking Association’s

newsletter. Spring has sprung in many places. As for some their Fall has

just beginning. Either way this is a beautiful time of year to start your

walking adventures. Some have traveled to Rotorua, Canberra, Gilboa and

Boras thus far.

News flash : 22nd Kyushu International Three-Day March 2016

We regret to inform our walkers that the organizers of the Kyushu International Three-Day March has canceled their event planned on 13th – 15th May 2016, due to Kumamoto / Yatsushiro area was affected by a series of earthquakes.

IML supports the cancellation of the 22nd Kyushu International Three-

Day March 2016 and we are confident that all our walkers will understand and accept this decision.

100th Four Days Marches 19-22 July 2016 - Nijmegen

The history of the Four Days Marches The first Four Days Marches took place in 1909. Participants could start from 15

different places in the Netherlands. They had to walk 140km in four days, 35km per

day. The marches were organised by the Nederlandse Bond voor Lichamelijke

Opvoeding (NBvLO) [Dutch League for Physical Education], which was founded in

1908. Of the 306 male participants, ten were civilians.

International Four Days Marches Nijmegen have grown into the largest multi-day

walking event in the world. More than 42,000 participants walk for four days in

Nijmegen and its surroundings, where they, depending on their age and sex, walk a

total of 120, 160 or 200 kilometers towards the Via Gladiola and towards the - now

royally approved - Four Days Marches Cross.

The symbol of the Four Days Marches

Nijmegen, the eldest city in the Netherlands, renames the St. Annastraat to Via

Gladiola once a year and on that day welcomes the walkers on the last day of the

Four Days Marches as true heroes. Traditionally, the spectators hand out gladiola to

the walkers.

ENJOY THE NORDIC COUNTRY SIDE

With four Nordic IML events, in Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland, you can experience the Nordic countryside on foot by participating in a well- organised walking event. Linnémarchen 23rd – 24th of April 2016, Harvejsmarchen 25th – 26th of June 2016, Vaasan- Marssi 12th -14th of August 2016 and Sagamarsjen 26th – 28th of August. Once you`ve completed the four walks, you are eligible for the bronze medal, and then you can go on to supplement the medal (s) with time nr. 2, time nr. 3 and so on. You must have an IML Nordic passport and get a stamp in it after each walking event. IML Nordic abides by the rules of the IML Walking Association. Participants walk all days of each walk event, and at least 20 km per day. Participants over the age of 70 walk at least 10 km per day. The IML Nordic Walking Events have been a really success so far. 176 participants have bought the passport, and 20 participants already got their bronze medal. The Events have people coming from many different countries as Germany, Norway, The Netherlands, Czech Republic, Denmark, Belgium, France, USA, Finland, Sweden, Austria and United Kingdom. So it is most likely that you will meet friends from all over the world.
