in his recordings of times, attendance and attitudes.

Like most of the Aquatic Centre fraternity who volunteer, he had a child who was a swimmer. She swam with the Silver Fins Swim Club. Some of us continue to be involved even after our children have finished the sport. So he did, but he went further. Already well qualified in academics, he continued to arm himself with credentials - a Commonwealth Caribbean Coaching Certificate, a Commonwealth Sports Development Programme General Coaching Certificate, an ASCA Certified Age Group Certificate, a Caribbean Coaching Certificate in Coaching Theory, and a High Level Technical Diploma for Triathlons. He also attended many FINA Coaching Clinics over the years. Ladies and gentlemen this was no hobby. This was a man with a mission!

Over the years, He coached Silver Fins Swim Club, Stingrays Swim Club, was National Coach for the Barbados Senior Squad and is currently Technical Director for Pirates Swim Club. Among his accomplishments he has coached several

Age-Group Champions, Carifta Champions, and CCCAN and CISC Champions. Some of these earlier swimmers whom you may know or have heard about would have trained at some point in time with him. Nicky Neckles, Nicholas Mayers, Natalie and Andre Ferdinand, Shontelle and Shawn Clarke, Bradley Ally, Martyn and Ryan Forde, Sean Dehere and Jayne Lewis to name only a few.

He was Head Coach for the Commonwealth Swim Team in Melbourne 2006, Head Coach for FINA World Championships in Melbourne in 2007, and for the Grand Prix Coupe du Quebec in 2009 where he was rewarded with Gold and Bronze medal performances and again at the Central American and Caribbean Games in 2009 with a silver medal performance.

In 2012 he was awarded Coach of the Year, by the Barbados Amateur Swimming Association. He was Head Coach for the FINA World Championships in Turkey in 2012; he was Head Coach for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014, Head Coach at the Youth Olympics in Nanjinj China in 2014 and Head Coach for the FINA World Short Course Championships in Doha 2014.

He has been described by his daughter as a strict disciplinarian and I am sure that anyone who has trained with him would confirm that. However, she told me she would not change him for anything in the world. He holds fast to his faith, he is particular with his diet and he truly believes in the spirit of volunteerism. He practices what he preaches. He goes out of his way to help any child who shows interest and has a goal. He does not tolerate bad manners. He has earned the respect of his peers. He is firm in his opinions and seldom wavers, as we all know, and seeks to prove in true Socratic manner why he is right.

Over the years this man has given his time, his energy, his commitment, his knowledge and his love to the swimming fraternity at the Aquatic Centre without asking for a salary. It was not just a hobby. The mission became his passion.

At this time his primary focus is his five-year old grand daughter, Eleana. I am told he attended her sports day this past week. I am not going to ask if he ran in the adult races. I know what happened when he swam in an adult race at the Aquatic Centre. I will spare him that recollection because he said it was a “one of a kind performance” that could not be repeated. Some things are special, so we’ll leave it at that.

Ladies and Gentlemen as part of our 25th Anniversary celebrations please stand and welcome Mr Abdul Sharif for his Lifetime Achievement Award.”

Upper Body

Land Training is a very important component of a swimmer’s overall strength and conditioning and injury management. In this segment we will focus on upper body training.

The latissimus dorsi muscles of the back play a large role in your ability to pull. You use these muscles from the time you start your freestyle until your hand is just past your chest. After this, your pull is dominated by your tricep muscles.

The pectoral muscles or “chest” muscles also play an integral part in both freestyle and breast stroke. This muscle group helps to stabilize your stroke.

Another major group involved in every swim stroke is the deltoids or shoulder muscles. Shoulder injuries are the most common injuries in swimming, making it very important to have this muscle group as strong as possible.

The following 4 exercises would greatly benefit all swim strokes helping you to become stronger, more powerful and faster through the water. Complete 2 sets of each exercise, 10-12 reps.

1. RowsPut one foot on the floor and the knee of the opposite leg on a chair or bench to assume a semi-kneeling position. Use one hand to balance on the chair or bench. Holding a dumbbell, kettlebell or resistance band in your opposite hand with arm straight down at your side lift the weight or band by bending arm at the elbow, bringing the weight or band toward chest.

Slowly lower weight back to starting position.

2. Chest Fly Lying down on a bench begin the exercise with dumbbells raised above chest with just a slight bend at your elbow. Slowly bring the weights out to the side in a rainbow shape ending the movement when you feel a stretch through your chest. Contract your chest muscles and bring the dumbbells back to starting position.

3. Lateral RaiseStanding holding dumbbells at your side, contract your shoulder muscles and lift the weights out to side of your body to height of your shoulders. Elbow can be slightly bent. Slowly lower and bring back to starting point.

4. Tricep ExtensionsAssume same positioning as Exercise #1, bring the weight towards chest bending at elbow, this is the starting point. From here, extend arm out behind your body keeping your elbow stable. Slowly bend at elbow again bringing arm back in to complete movement.

the resurgance of water poloWater Polo Developments

by Cheryl, Lady Forde

The Barbados Water Polo Club benefited tremendously from the FINA programme that was conducted by Coach Laszlo Hruza. The programme was funded through Olympic Solidarity’s World Programme for Coaches 2013-2016 and administered by the Barbados Olympic Association.

Coach Hruza conducted the training programme from late May to August and again from October to November 30th, 2015. During the summer period, he worked with the children who were in the National Sports Council’s camp. Through this forum he was able to introduce water polo to a large number of children who would

not normally have been exposed to the sport.

In September many of these children continued to practice with the Club under a special arrangement with the Club and the Aquatic Centre. This was recommended by the BOA as a means of transitioning the new players into the regular training programme. This worked well. The Club now has a vibrant youth team- Under 14) made up of boys and girls with a strong Girls’ team emerging, a junior team-18 and Under and a senior team-Over 18.

The older members-the juniors and

the seniors have made significant strides with Laszlo’s coaching. In addition Laszlo also conducted training sessions in coaching for the senior players who often have to conduct the regular coaching sessions. The Under 18 team and the Seniors team competed in November 2015 in the Miami Riptides Open competition in Florida. The Under 18 team finished 5th in this ten team tournament.

In December the Under 14 mixed team (boys and girls), coached by Natalia Parris won the silver medals and second-place trophy at the Trinidad Water Polo Nationals. They played

against all all-boys teams.

Going forward the Club is planning to work with the National Sports Council to establish a Schools’ League. After the successes at the end of 2015 the members are more enthusiastic and determined to take their game to a higher level.

At the BASA Awards ceremony on Sunday February 7th, Xavier Smith-Taylor won the prize for the “Most Outstanding Polo Player”. In the Trinidad tournament he scored twenty two goals out of the 50 tournament goals. Simon Wilkie captured the award for “Most Improved and Committed player”. Simon has shown great improvement and consistency in his game and has helped to motivate the new members.

Natalia Parris was awarded “Coach of the Year”.

BARBADOS’ CARIFTA 2016 TEAM QUALIFYING TIMES

Barbados’ Carifta Swim TeamSelection Process. The BASA Technical Sub-Committee shall meet and recommend a team for the approval of the Council consistent with the standards outlined below.

- National teams shall be selected based on qualifying standards met.

- Competitors with the first and second fastest time in the event shall be selected to swim the event.

- The qualifier must swim the event in which he or she has met the standard.

- Secondary qualifiers are competitors who have met the qualifying standards but times achieved are other than first or second.

- A secondary qualifier may be selected where the order of events does not allow the primary qualifiers to swim all of the events for which a qualifying time has been achieved effectively and the difference in time between the secondary qualifier and the main qualifiers is insignificant. A secondary qualifier may be considered for relay purposes if it can be shown that the relay team, based on the aggregate of times, has a chance of winning a medal.

- A non qualifier may be selected for relay purposes where 3 persons have met the qualifying standards. The times achieved by the non-qualifier, although not meeting the qualifying standard, are either the fastest in the event or very close to the times posted by the main qualifiers. The aggregate of times of the 4 persons must indicate that the relay team is capable of medaling. Having been selected this individual may swim individual events not selected or taken by those who have made the qualifying standards.
