Because the d line design theme is con-sistent throughout the product line, special combinations or adaptations canbe made without compromising thedesign expression.

The Building Blocks of Creative Design

Modular components are the basis of thed line Handrail system. d line balustradesare crafted from a variety of elementsspecifically designed to allow thebalustrade as a whole to mould itself to the inherent structural variations ofstaircase geometries.

The primary material used in d line’s Handrail system is 316 L stainless steel; achoice based on the superior qualities ofhygiene, strength and endurance.

Advantages of ComponentBased Balustrades

Flexibility: easily assemble or dis-assemble, remove part or all of system inorder to repair, alter design, refurbish etc.

No aesthetic compromises: flawlessmanufacture prevents damage inflictedby grinding, welding, polishing etc.

Pre-engineered: all facets concerningdesign, strength, production and installation are integrated into a thoroughly meditated concept.

Speed: readily available componentsdelivered to site in a matter of days. Pre-engineered mounting techniquesallow system to fall in place like building blocks.

Minimal site impact: low interferencewith other trades, and quick installation

Consistent design and quality.

d line offers standard assembly packageswith time-honoured credentials. However, the inherent flexibility of the d line Handrail system allows forcombinations that easily adapt tochallenging constructions or retro-fittings.

Three Main Options

The d line Handrail system may bedivided into three distinct designcategories:

Upright: d line uprights present aseemingly uninterrupted glass surface as opposed to conventional glassbalustrades that use glass as infill panels. The combined strength of thesteel uprights and the continuous glassguarding provides time and test provensecurity.

Glass Link: a d line upright option thatreduces the overall number of uprights, reduces glass panel sizes, and allowsequal spacing between uprights.

Structural Glazing: is truly a minimalistbalustrade where the steel uprights havebeen eliminated and the glass guardingis specified to offer equivalent strengthand security.

Four Upright Options

Expressiond line uprights defy traditional symmetry.Glass panels are not mounted betweenuprights but extend panel-to-panel,creating an unimpeded guarding by wayof cantilevers.

FunctionBy definition, each and every structure isunique in its design and geometry. Withthis in mind, d line’s range of fixingtechniques allows for flexibility andadaptation without aesthetic compromise.

d line balustrade solutions focus on sidefixed systems as these require lowercontracting costs for the same guardedspace than a floor mounted system does.

Simple fixing and building blockassembly make installation time shortwherein; possible hindrance to theconstruction work flow is avoided.Furthermore, the modular nature of thesystem allows for the installation to takeplace very late in the constructionprocess.

EconomyThe right match of fixing technique toany given structure will reduce labourcosts. The flexibility of the d lineHandrail system means that solutionsmay be found where complicatedstairwells or staircases would otherwisecause problems. This likely limitation on installation orglass expenses should be weighed against the product price. Consult your local d line partner formaking an economical solution.

Blok Fixings have level adjustmentsincorporated in their design. A levelbaluster is dependent upon havingplaced fixings accurately. Even slightmiscalculations will affect the appearanceof the system as a whole.

Blok Fixing with Full Glass differs fromthe raised glass solution in that theguarding extends below floor level toconceal the structure behind the glass.

The glass extension combined with theuninterrupted guarding creates aspectacular glazed effect. This upright isthe only one that cannot be used incombination with Glass Link.

The raised glass solution offers all theadvantages of the built-in leveladjustments inherent to Blok Fixing. However, the glass is mounted to theupright rather than the blok. Althoughthis reduces the glazing effect, itconstitutes an aesthetic expression in its own right.

Design-wise, this fixing is closely relatedto the Blok Fixing. The method of levelling requires spacersto be added behind the fixings. This solution is the most flexible within the d line Handrail system and easily adaptsto a variety of challenging constructions.

Glass Link

This solution enables an upright to act asa support between two glass panels. d line glass panels are usually supportedby midsection uprights creating acontinuous glazing effect. Great attention has been paid tomaintaining this effect by minimizing thegap between the two Glass Link panels, and by allowing for combinations ofGlass Link panels and d line cantileveruprights.

Glass Links are especially applicable on astairway flight where the number ofuprights may be reduced. The GlassLink’s ability to rotate means that it canbe mounted parallel to the given angle ofany staircase.

Structural Glazing

The main characteristic of this elegantsolution within the d line Handrail systemis that specially dimensioned glass panels,by virtue of their inherent strength, makeuprights superfluous. This minimalistexpression is distinctly d line.

d line provides fixings for the glass andhandrail that have been security tested tothe same standards as d line’s balustradewith steel uprights, ensuring that thesecurity demands imposed by d line onall its products are met.

Wall Rail

The wall rail displays the same designcharacteristics as the balustrade. Thus, the combination around stairwellsappears seamless.

Available in two varieties:Rosette fixing: ideal for soft wall construction and staircases with high volume traffic.Secret fixing: minimalist design mostapplicable on concrete or hard wall construction.

Glass Rail

d line offers a handrail that is mountedon glass. This is an elegant solution forpartitions and balustrades.

Available in three variations:Short bracket: glass runs below thehandrail, providing sufficient space forthe hand.Long bracket: where glass continuesabove the handrail, space for the handmust be increased.Back-to-back rail: two brackets opposingeach other connected by bolt throughglass.

Terminations

Where a balustrade or handrailterminates, d line offers a variety ofsolutions.

Straight termination: the cantilever of thetermination complements the cantileverof the glass panel to which it is connected. Available in 50mm increments150mm to 350mm.

32 degree termination: cantilevered witha slight 32 degree bend of handrail tubetoward floor as an indicator that stair willend. Available in 50mm increments150mm to 350mm.

Straight into wall: intended wherebalustrade or handrail ends into aperpendicular wall. Available in 300 and 800mm cut to size.

90 degree return to wall: intended wherebalustrade or handrail ends in parallelwall as an indicator that rail will end.Available in 300 and 800mm cut to size.

The intelligently engineered OmniBend isa specialized component that enableshandrails to easily change direction, e.g.where angle staircase meets horizontallanding.

The ability to adjust the angle (between30 and 40 degrees) on site from a readilyavailable component means that the d line Handrail OmniBend can be installedwithin a very short timeframe.

Securityd line’s minimalist design has in no waysacrificed security. d line is constantly testing and updatingits balustrades in order to comply withthe various global standards. In this process, d line draws on theexpertise of independently credentialedauthorities such as BSI, TüV and AISI.

SafetySafety in balustrade is primarily relatedto load and impact resistance. Theabove graph shows the relation betweenloading and the amount of spacebetween fixings.

d line has adopted our measure ofsecurity from the British StandardInstitute (BSI) for static load deflectionand the Deutsches Institut für Bautechnik(DI Bt) for glass impact and analyticcalculation.

Learn more about d line safetycompliance at our websitewww.dline.com. Follow our guidelineson how to specify a fail-safe balustradein your part of the world.
