KE House Solar TransformationProject Preamble and Highlights
KE’s Small Scale Solar/ RE Program: Energy Conservation Department (ECD)
• KE’s in-house project manager for solar PV projects design and implementation:– 600 KW of small scale grid tied and off grid projects have been successfully completed.
• These projects ensure facility’s compliance with:– Energy conservation and efficiency targets.– Best practices in energy management.
• KE’s point of contact for both internal and external stakeholders and the leaddepartment on proposed Net Metering rules.
• The department supports and promotes state of the art technologies and solutionsfor KE’s consumers.
• Besides technical consulting services and RE projects, ECD actively conductsawareness programs which include school campaigns and industrial energyefficiency seminars throughout Karachi.

• Two PV projects have been completed: 25 KW BOC project 267.5 KW Carport project
Potential for Solar in Karachi
Plenty of Sun hours in Karachi
• 320 days of 6 hours sunshineis taken as an approximate.
• Panels in the duration haveshown to perform to 85% oftheir rated capacity.
25 KW Rooftop PV Project – Pilot Phase
• In March 2015 management approved installation of 25 KWrooftop solar at KE House.
• Top 5 vendors had submitted their proposals which were evaluatedon techno-commercial basis.
• On the basis of above selection, Orient Energy Systems wereselected in April 2015.
• In August 2015 First Solar (USA) offered free of cost panels.
• After re-evaluation of the proposals, MAQ international and FirstSolar (USA) were awarded the contract in October 2015.
Project Overview – 25 KW BOC Rooftop PV
• The project at BOC is equipped with 225 thin film (First Solar) solar panelsand 3 SMA inverters. The PV system is grid tied and also served as the pilotproject for testing of Net Metering.
• The 25 KW project has been performing up to expectations and is capable of generating 43,500 KWh/year.

Power Quality Results: 25 KW Pilot Net Metering Project
• According to IEE Std. 519-1992 Total Harmonic Distortion limit is 5 % for voltages below 69kV and above 120 V.
• Our study ensures that the inverter complies with IEEE 1547 grid interconnection code• Other parameters including voltage range, frequency range and power factor are within
acceptable limits as outlined in the interconnection code.
267.5 KW Solar Carport Project – Phase II
• March 2016, approval for the 267.5 KW solar carport project
• Orient Energy Systems and MAQ International shortlisted.MAQ backed off.
• Orient Energy Systems given go ahead in May 2016:
– Approval from CFT comprising of Business Finance, Procurement andECD.
