IHSA CLASS 7A SECOND ROUND: GENEVA 26, HONONEGAH 20

Geneva holds on to advance to quarterfinalsBy JAY SCHWAB

[email protected]

GENEVA – The Geneva foot-ball team went from having itsIHSA Class 7A second-roundplayoff game well in hand todesperately fighting off hard-charging Rockton Hononegahin the closing minutes.

“That’s playoff football,” Ge-neva coach Rob Wicinski said.

The Vikings are in for moreof that after thwarting Ho-nonegah’s comeback for a 26-20win Saturday at Burgess Field.Geneva (10-1) advances to vis-it top-seeded Cary-Grove (11-0) in next week’s quarterfinalround.

Geneva led, 26-7, after quar-terback Daniel Santacaterinahit fullback Max Woodworthon a 4-yard touchdown pass toopen the fourth quarter. Con-sidering the Wing-T Indiansaren’t known as a quick-strikeoffense and didn’t even attempta pass in the first half, the Vi-kings were in commanding po-sition.

But Hononegah (9-2) showedan ability to mix the passinto its attack and scored ona 5-yard touchdown run fromSamuel Ballano with 8:31 to go,making it 26-13. The Indiansthen recovered an onside kickand benefited from a pass inter-ference call on fourth-and-18 tokeep the ensuing drive going.

Indians quarterback Day-tona Chandler fired a 19-yardtouchdown pass to TristynBerg at the 3:51 mark of thefourth quarter, and the pointafter made it 26-20.

Geneva’s heartburn intensi-fied – substantially – when theIndians’ Fernie Silva recovereda fumble at the Geneva 33-yardline with 3:06 to play. But theIndians’ bid to drive for the go-ahead score never gained trac-tion, as a holding penalty andtackle for a loss by Chris Barg-er backed Hononegah up beforeVikings senior Brock Perry in-tercepted a fourth down heavewith 1:31 left.

The Vikings were able toextinguish the clock and cele-brate their second home playoffwin in as many weeks.

Despite the fourth-quartermiscues, Wicinski was mostlyproud with how his team han-dled a hard-nosed Hononegahteam that set a bruising tone

with an 80-yard drive thatspanned almost 8 minutes latein the first quarter and spillinginto the second. That tied thegame, 7-all, after Geneva wentup early on a Justin Taormina3-yard TD run.

“We weren’t built for thisteam,” Wicinski said of hisdefense. “We were built morefor spread teams. That’s kindof the way we’ve evolved overthese past four or five years.Missing [defensive end JackMcCloughan, broken hand],he’s a big part of our defense, soI thought Collin Lee stepped upand did a really great job, andespecially against this team.Collin Lee’s more of a spreadtype of an end, not a pound ittype end, but he sure showedsome nice speed.”

Lee, a junior who movedfrom safety to defensive endat the start of the season, ac-knowledged he’s “not the big-gest guy out there, that’s forsure,” but still complementedpass-rushing dynamos StephenKemp and Matt Loberg withsome timely plays.

“I was kind of nervous but Ihad a good week of practice, ev-eryone had a good week of prac-tice,” Lee said. “We knew theywere going to run the ball a lotand we were well prepared.”

The Vikings led, 14-7, at half-time, after Santacaterina rolledto his left and hit a sliding PaceTemple for a 3-yard TD passjust 7 seconds before intermis-sion. Wicinski said he’s notsure if he would have ordereda short field goal or attemptedanother play if the pass wasn’tcompleted, but he was relievedhe didn’t have to decide.

Santacaterina (11 of 12 pass-ing for 141 yards, three TDpasses) added an 18-yard TDhookup with junior Jack Was-sel that made it 20-7 with 5:07left in the third quarter. AlexBrowere’s PAT attempt ric-ocheted no good off the rightpost.

“The quarterback’s a heck ofa player and [Temple] is a greatreceiver,” Hononegah coachTim Sughroue said. “They cango to a lot of weapons so it’shard to say you want to take

anything away, but [Temple] isa very good player, I’d say that, for sure. He was somethingwe were concerned about, buthey, [Mike Landi] made somebig catches today, [Jack Was-sel] made that one catch downthere, so hey, they’re spreadingthe wealth. They’ve got a lot ofkids making plays. I thoughtwe did a great job on run de-

fense.”Vikings offensive tackle

Loudon Vollbrecht saluted theBurgess Field crowd for itsrobust support as the Indiansfaltered in the closing minutes.

“It was great – it really showswhat it means to this town, Ge-neva … everything that thesefans do for us, we appreciate somuch,” Vollbrecht said.

IHSA CLASS 7A SECOND ROUND: CARY-GROVE 35, ST. CHARLES NORTH 14

H. Rick Bamman – [email protected]

St. Charles North’s Jake Chantos (from left), Jake Spaniol and Carson Schmitt react on the bench late in the fourth quarter Saturday. Host St. Charles North lost to Cary-Grove, 35-14, in the second round of the 7A playoffs.

St. Charles North can’t corral Cary-GroveBy KEVIN DRULEY

[email protected]

ST. CHARLES – Cary-Grove’s triple-option offenseultimately exhausted the St.Charles North football team ofits own alternatives Saturday.

North’s season-ending, 35-14 loss to the Trojans in thesecond round of the Class 7Aplayoffs hinged on the verypoint of emphasis the NorthStars internalized during theweek.

Top-seeded Cary-Grove (11-0) often is imitated given therelative novelty of its attack. As the North Stars (8-3) dis-covered, duplication remainsanother story.

“The speed, definitely,”North senior linebacker Bren-dan McCarthy said. “Becausethey run it every single dayin practice, and it’s kind of

hard for scout [team], becausethey run a particular offensewhere it’s all downhill and it’sall full-tilt. Kind of just all-go.”

Cary-Grove, which hosts10-1 Geneva in a quarterfinalnext week, found its offensivegroove early, rolling to touch-downs on each of its firstthree drives. The second wasmost methodical, covering 12plays, 78 yards and taking 6:14off the clock.

North, which rode its elitedefense to a six-game winningstreak entering the afternoon, shined in spots, but was un-able to consistently slow theTrojans. Sophomore fullbackTyler Pennington capped eachof the first three drives with atouchdown run.

His third score, from 22yards out, immediately fol-lowed a holding penalty.Pennington fumbled inside

the North 5-yard line, but theball bounced right back intohis breadbasket. He added afourth touchdown early in thefourth quarter.

“The biggest thing withthis offense is physicality. …We’re physical in everythingwe do,” Trojans senior guardMichael Gomez said. “I be-lieve we’re the hardest-work-ing team in the state, and Ithink it translates. Becausereally, we’re undersized, butcoach [Brad Seaburg] has re-ally ingrained the physicaltoughness in us.”

With Gomez, Penningtonand others also showing theirsnarl on the other side of theball, the North Stars sput-tered offensively, too.

North notched its initialfirst down of the game with1:55 to go in the second quar-ter, and both of its touchdowns

came defensively – fumble re-turns from linebackers TylerMettetal (second quarter) andJack Callaghan (fourth).

Mettetal perfectly antici-pated a pitch from Cary-Grovequarterback Jason Gregoireand raced 35 yards to the endzone with 5:30 remaining be-fore halftime.

“Oh, it felt like a turningpoint completely. It felt likewe had a chance to just go outand win the game,” McCarthysaid.

That’s as close as Northcame, however.

Trailing, 20-7, at halftime,North sent its initial kickoffout of bounds. Cary-Groveelected for a re-kick, and theTrojans eventually openedthe third quarter at North’s42-yard-line after a NorthStars facemask penalty.

Senior running back Matt

Sutherland scored on a 38-yard run two plays later, punctuating a sequence Northcoach Rob Pomazak said “re-ally kind of broke our backs.”

Although dual-threat quar-terback Nathan Didier foundopenings in both the runningand passing game, the Trojans“D” excelled behind its famil-iar cushion.

“It was just playing a great, sound game all around,” saidSutherland, also a linebacker.“Getting some pressure on thequarterback. He’s pretty mo-bile. Getting some pressureand then just locking downtheir receivers.”

Didier connected withBlake Kastein for 15 yards ona fourth-and-goal from the 16one drive later, as the team’smost productive offensivedrive ended on the doorstep ofthe goal line.

“McKenzie’s just a competi-tor,” Geneva coach Bob Thom-son said. “She went out thereand competed from the begin-ning of the race until the end.”

Added North Stars coachShari Hayes about Ernst: “Ithink that the regionals, sec-tionals weren’t where shethought she should be, so goinginto the state meet she wasn’trunning at the top of her game,so today she got back to run-ning toward the front, which Ithought was impressive.”

Wheaton Academysteamrolls to state title

By DEREK [email protected]

HOFFMAN ESTATES –The Wheaton Academy boyssoccer team left little doubtabout which team is superiorin Class 2A this season.

For the second straightday, the Warriors were ableto emerge victorious in dom-inating fashion, defeatingSt. Joseph, 5-1, in Saturday’sIHSA Class 2A state champi-onship match.

Wheaton Academy (25-1-1)won its first state champion-ship in program history inthe process, distancing thememories of the past two sea-sons when they settled forfourth in the state both times.

“That was the main drive, just that the last two yearswe couldn’t quite hold outso we knew that we only hadone shot with this team, es-pecially the seniors,” seniorforward Reid Culberson said.“We knew we had a goodteam so we really wantedto win this game and that’swhat drove us.”

T h e W a r r i o r s n e v e rtrailed in the match after go-ing up early on a 9th minutestrike by senior midfielderLucas Hoepner, his first oftwo goals on the afternoon.

Hoepner’s shot inside the18 hit the crossbar before ca-reening back out to him, fin-ishing the ball with his headfor the 1-0 lead.

Culberson added his firstof two goals in the 16th min-ute, collecting a rebound afterTy Seager drove a ball towardthe net from the right side ofthe 18 and had his cross de-flected.

Seager hooked up with Ho-epner in the 34th minute totriple the lead, but St. Josephwas able to get on the boarda minute later off a set piece.

Chargers midfielder Vic-tor Moreno blasted a brilliantshot past Warriors goalkeep-er Drew Sezonov at the backpost after Sezenov deflecteda spinning corner kick backout towards Moreno.

With the 3-1 lead headinginto the half, the Warriorseasily could have sat backand played it safe with a de-fensive formation for the fi-nal 40 minutes.

But facing a previouslyunbeaten St. Joe team thathad trailed 2-0 at halftime inits semifinal matchup againstSt. Viator on Friday beforecoming back to win in a pen-alty shootout, Seager em-phasized playing a completegame.

“We were up by two goalsat halftime and knew that it’sgoing to take a full 80 to winthe game,” Seager said. “Weweren’t going to give up so wetried to do that and get anoth-er goal and another goal justto put it away and ultimatelyfinish the game and finish ona strong note.”

147Couple’s pregnancy is

no business of friendDear Abby: May I have

some advice about atouchy subject? One ofmy boyfriend’s closefriends is going throughhis third bout with can-cer and the prognosis isnot good.

He is married with ahealthy 3-year-old son.So imagine our surprisewhen his wife announcedshe’s pregnant.

This is a decision we donot support. I don’t knowwhat they’re thinking, but if you are facing thereality that your spousewill not be around muchlonger, we don’t feel itis wise to bring anotherchild into the world whowill never know his or herfather.

Some of her closefriends want to throw hera “sprinkle,” and althoughI am only an acquain-tance, I have been invited. How do I handle this?Should I attend and keepmy thoughts to myself, de-cline and/or send a smallgift in my absence? I havea hard time making smalltalk about subjects I don’tagree with.

Did I mention she doesnothing but complainabout how hard her life isnow? I’m afraid if I go andget involved, I’ll be on thehook down the road whenshe wants to complainabout how hard it is toraise two children alone. –Isn’t My Choice

Dear Isn’t: Feeling asyou do, decline the invi-tation. This woman needsfriends around her duringthis painful and traumat-ic time, and you do notqualify.

To send a small giftwould be both thoughtfuland kind, because I amsure her life is extremelydifficult now.

As to this couple hav-ing made a decision withwhich you do not agree, allow me to point out thatnot all pregnancies areplanned, and this may beone of them.

Dear Abby: My folks

are in their mid-70s andhave health problems. Myoldest niece, “Riley,” willgraduate from high schoolnext spring and is consid-ering going to a collegenear them. My parentsrecently told me that mybrother is suggesting Ri-ley move in with them.

The girl has somebehavioral issues and isin counseling. She’s notan easy, happy or normalkid.

My parents are ex-tremely uncomfortablewith the idea, but havenot said anything to mybrother. I think they areafraid of a fight or causinghurt feelings. He is in de-nial about his daughter’sproblems.

I’m concerned aboutmy parents. At their age,I don’t think it’s fairto expect them to haveanother teenager in theirhome, much less one withissues. Is it my place tosay something, and if so,what do I say? – LookingOut for Mom and Dad

Dear Looking Out: Youshould definitely saysomething, but not to yourbrother. Talk with yourparents.

Remind them that ifthey’re not OK with thearrangement your brotherhas proposed, it’s their re-sponsibility to make plainthat because of their agesand their health problemsthey’ll be unable to accom-modate his request.

Because it’s the truth,it shouldn’t cause anargument or hurt feelings. Also, your brother willhave plenty of advancenotice that other livingarrangements will have tobe made for Riley.

Difficult deals givedifficult decisionsLudwig Mies van der Rohe, an

architect who was born in Germa-ny but lived in the United Statesfrom 1944 until his death in 1969,said: “A chair is a very difficultobject. A skyscraper is almosteasier. That is why Chippendaleis famous.”

Bridge players sit in chairsand face difficult objects – thedeals. This one, from a socialgame, is particularly taxing. Howshould the auction proceed afterSouth opens one diamond (do youagree?) and West passes?

Yes, South might open twoclubs, but his hand is a tad shy inhigh-card terms.

First, North must decide howto respond. Most would bid onespade, but if a 4-4 fit does notexist, bidding two clubs would bebetter. Over one spade, South hasno textbook rebid. Three dia-monds is an underbid, and threeno-trump (which shows a goodlong minor in a hand too strongfor a three-diamond rebid) is un-appealing with the low singletonclub. My choice would be a two-heart reverse. It is not ideal, butat least it is forcing. Here, Northwould presumably rebid in no-trump, and the hard part wouldbe staying out of a slam.

If North responds two clubs,South can rebid a game-forcingthree diamonds. North willcontinue with three spades, andSouth is again in a quandary.I would continue with fourdiamonds, trusting that threeno-trump is not the only makinggame. Against six diamonds orsix no-trump, West must lead ei-ther major suit to disrupt declar-er’s communications. Otherwise, declarer can establish dummy’sclub suit and overtake his spadeking with the ace to reach thedummy.
