From the Helm We all enjoyed another great Clambake this year. Many have told me that it was the best ever. The weather was beautiful and the band was sensational. With the new fry- ers, the food was the best ever. Thank you to the over 170 members and friends who volunteered to make it a very special day. Over 490 people attended which is a record. March brings some great activities for our members to participate. On March 8th, we will be working at Key Colony Beach Days. Once again we will entertain the public with the World Famous Barracuda Races and will be raffling off another Wheel Barrow of Cheer. We can still use a few people to help with the Wheelbarrow. So if you have a couple of hours to spare, please see Tom Alferes at the meeting. Tickets for the End of Season Dinner will go on sale at the March meeting. This event will be held at City Hall and will feature a Prime Rib or Chicken dinner catered by Cabana Breezes. We will have a great meal followed by dessert fea- turing an ice cream Sunday bar. Music will be provided by Bobby Newman and there will be a large dance floor. Ask anyone who went last year how great this dinner was. Tickets are limited so make sure to get yours at the meeting. We will have an open bar with top shelf liquor and wine. Tickets are $35.00. This dinner costs a whole lot more than $35.00 to the club but it is our way of saying thanks for all your help during the season. On March 21st, we will travel to Little Palm Island and enjoy a nice boat trip from Little Torch Key to the island where we will feast on their incredible buffet, Champaign, and Bloody Mary’s enjoying the day among friends. This event once again sold out in a couple of hours and we will have 80 members participate. We will be collecting for the Relay for Life at the March meeting. Our members have always been very supportive for this cause, so please be generous. Please remember to mark your calendars for March 14th at 4:00PM. There will be a Celebration of Life honoring our longtime member and friend Orv Broberg who recently passed away. This service will take place at Sunset Park. Please attend if at all possible. If you have not received your gift certificate, please be sure to pick one up before the start of the meeting. Gift certificates must be picked up at the March or April meeting and cannot be mailed. This month’s seminar will feature a knot tying demon- stration and contest hosted one of our very best fish- ermen, Dave Burnett. The seminar will begin at 5:00 PM. Thanks again for all your help with the Clambake and especially to those who donated their fish. Looking forward to seeing everyone at our meeting on Friday, March 6th. We all enjoyed another great Clambake this year. Many have told me that it was the best ever. The weather was beautiful and the band was sensational. With the new fry-ers, the food was the best ever. Thank you to the over 170 members and friends who volunteered to make it a very special day. Over 490 people attended which is a record.

March brings some great activities for our members to participate. On March 8th, we will be working at Key Colony Beach Days. Once again we will entertain the public

with the World Famous Barracuda Races and will be raffling off another Wheel Barrow of Cheer. We can still use a few people to help with the Wheelbarrow. So if you have a couple of hours to spare, please see Tom Alferes at the meeting.

Membership Mumbles

We have welcomed our new members, and most people have gotten their current 2015 Stickers. If you have NOT gotten yours, please see me at the meeting, and I’ll be happy to give it to you. Remember, you must have your 2015 sticker on your ID Badge, together with a regular ID in order enjoy the benefits of any discounts, etc. given by our sponsors. Please don’t put the sponsors in the position of having to refuse the discount to you because you do not have your 2015 sticker. Everyone did a great job getting their dues paid in, in record time this year, and I appreci-ate all your help – you made my job much easier.

Also, anyone who has not volunteered yet (and you know who you are), please contact Tom Alferes about volunteer-ing for KCB days. We will be sending out emails to anyone that we do not have a record of having volunteered. Vol-unteerism is an important part of this club. Help us to make the club better each and every year.

Tournament News

Thanks to all the members that helped and to those that contributed to the silent charity auction. A special thanks to my wife Carole who personally contacted over eighty-five (85) merchants and to my assistant Yvonne Wright who spent two weeks soliciting merchants and picking up donations. I also want to thank Dave Burnett who gave us $100 of dollars worth of his hand made lures. Many local charities will benefit from these donations and tireless efforts by the many workers.

The winners last month of the Florida Keys Air Offshore tournament were Geza Zoller 1st place and John Ty-son. Captain Hooks winners were Chet Polk 1st place , 2nd Charles Alferes, and 3rd John Luciano. Sparkys Fish for Food was won by John Luciano 1st, Geza Zoller 2nd, and Darleen Cropper and Dave Burnett tied for 3rd.

This month we will have the March Madness Tournament sponsored by Sanibel Glass & Mirror. There will be two (2) winners. The best off shore fish and the best inshore fish by percentage will determine the winner. You can only win one of the categories. Also this month we will start the Cabana Breezes Membership Tournament that will be open to all the members. This tournament will run for two (2) months and the top three (3) weigh-ins of any of our listed fish will win part of the $300 gift certificates provided by Cabana Breezes. Once again, a fish that is weighed in for the March Madness Tournament cannot also be weighed in for the Breezes Tournament. With two (2) more months left to fish you can still enroll for $40 and be eligible to enter all the money tournaments. Don’t forget to check our website that will give you current state records and upcoming events. www.keycolonyfishing.com

Thanks, let’s go fishing!

Minutes February 6, 2015

The February meeting of the Fishing & Boating Club was called to order on February 6, 2015 at 6:30PM with the Pledge of Allegiance. Members remained standing and observed a moment of silence in memory of one of our great members Orville Broberg. There will be a memorial to honor Orv at Sunset Park on March 14th at 4:00PM. Please plan on attending the ceremony. Commodore Bill Knickman then stated the purpose of the Club which is to promote fish-ing, boating and good fellowship among all members.

The minutes of the January 2nd meeting were accepted on a motion by Tom Tucker which was seconded by Bill Fahs and passed by the members.

Treasurer Chick Lees read the January Treasurer’s Report. As of December 31, 2014 the account balance was

The Commodore then welcomed the new members to the Club and asked that they stand and be recognized. This year, we accepted eight new members. A reminder to all new members to please get involved and volunteer. Also, be sure to check our website for discounts available to members.

Tonight, dinner is being provided by Frank and Helen Gessell with Tom and Anita Alferes supplying the salad. Thank you. Thanks also to Stan and Jackie Topolski for bartending; Ron and Kitty Sutton for handling the sale of the 50/50 tickets; Bob and Crystal Carew for overseeing the check in process; and all the people who help set up, tear down and clean up.

Vice Commodore Bob Warn informed all members that the Little Palm Island Brunch is sold out. There are two sign up times for the launch to the island – 10:30 and 11:30. Please see Rene Warn at the side table if you have a preference.

Director at Large Jerry Ellis reminded all members to please be sure to pick up your gift certificate after the meeting if you haven’t already done so. Lyn Paterson is overseeing the distribution of the gift certificates. Tickets for the Clam-bake are on sale tonight.

Fund Raising Chairman Tom Alferes updated the meeting on the number of Clambake tickets already sold tonight – 340! Only about 80 tickets remain for purchase. He reminded everyone to bring your chairs, tables, etc. to the Clam-bake.

Tournament Director John Fruhmorgen presented the prize money to the following winning anglers – Geza Zoller (1st place) and John Tyson (2nd place) in the Tournament sponsored by Florida Keys Air Conditioning; next, prizes were awarded to Darleen Cropper, Dave Burnet (two time prize winner), John Luciano and Tom Casey.

The winners of Sparky’s Landing Fish for Food Tournament were John Luciano (1st place), Geza Zoller (2nd place), Dave Burnet and Darleen Cropper (tied for 3rd place).

Danise and Mike from Captain Hooks presented the awards to the winners of the Mackerel Tournament – Charles Polk (1st place), Charles Alferes (2nd place) and John Luciano (3rd place). The first place winner received a custom rod and reel.

Centennial Bank is sponsoring a Yellowtail Tournament; 3rd Generation Plumbing is sponsoring the Inshore/Offshore Tournament; and the Angler of the Year event is sponsored by Marathon Garbage and Glunz Resort. Check our web-site for the rules of the various tournaments.

Last year’s 2nd and 3rd place winners for Angler of the Year were Pat Stewart and Geza Zoller.

If you have any items for the silent auction please see John.

Don Palmer provided a report on Skinny Waters. John Albin with 16 fish is the January winner with Jim McCadie in second place.

Old Business: Commodore Bill Knickman reminded members that Clambake tickets are on sale tonight. Tickets are $20 for members and $30 for non members. Tickets will be on sale at the Post Office tomorrow until they are sold out. We are all looking forward to another great Clambake. Rick and Danya will once again be providing the music. Re-member to wear your yellow wristband at all times during the event. The KCB police have authorized diagonal parking on 7th street for the Clambake. Tee shirts for Clambake volunteers are available for the Captains to pick up tonight or later at Bill’s house. We have our quota of fish for the Clambake. Thanks to everyone who contributed fillets with a special thanks to Phil Flagg who contributed 37 pounds of fish fillets.

The Commodore also extended the Club’s thanks to Dr. Sam Zaydon for his excellent seminar on emergency medicine at sea that began at 5:00 this evening.

The previously mentioned trailer parking project needs to be approved by the City and there is no arrangement cur-rently in place to allow volunteers to move up the waiting list or obtain long term trailer space in exchange for volun-teering to work on the project.

New Business: We still need volunteers for KCB Day to assist with the barracuda races and sell wheelbarrow of cheer tickets. Please see Tom Alferes if you can help. The funds in the tip jar do not go to the bartenders, rather it is used to replenish the libations that we all enjoy. Club merchandise is on sale at the side table.

Bill then said a few words about Orville Broberg. Orv was a talented inventor and successful businessman. He was a kind, generous man who volunteered and cared about the community. He will certainly be missed. The Club is having a park bench placed at Sunset Park with a plaque dedicating the bench to Orv.

Guest Speakers: Larry Kandzior (Fish with a Hero Project/Project Healing Waters) informed the group that his organi-zation teaches wounded veterans to fly fish. Last year they sponsored 33 wounded soldiers for a weekend at Pigeon Key. The Club helped to organize the event and Key Colony Inn donated dinners for the participants on Pigeon Key. This year the event will take place September 22nd – 25th. The organization is in a fund raising mode to cover the cost of the event. Larry thanked the Club for our assistance last year.

Danise from Captain Hooks introduced their new manager Mike. They are sponsoring a basketball tournament at Marathon high School on the 24th. There is a $10 entrance fee. Captain Hooks will once again hold a barbecue for the Club at a “to be decided” date.

A motion to adjourn was made by Marie Flood and seconded by Bill Fahs. The winner of the 50/50 prize was Charles Alferes.
