We have been delighted to have had a very smooth start to the year and it is lovely to see our parent community back inside our school gates! A huge thank you for getting your children ready for the school year, this has assisted us enormously in settling the students into their school year. Whilst COVID restrictions have eased in around the school, it is still necessary for adults to adhere to 1.5m social distancing guidelines inside the school gates. We have really appreciated everyone adhering to these guidelines to date. We look forward to another great year of learning and partnering with you as we work together to provide your children with the best possible schooling experience. Please keep your eye out for information regarding parent information afternoons for your children’s year levels. Attending these sessions are a great way to get an insight into what your child’s year will look like and what scheduled activities are planned for them throughout the year. Staff worked very hard prior to the return of school to set up an environment conducive to engaging learning and are looking forward to seeing exciting student growth in all areas of the curriculum. Staffing I would like to welcome the following new and returning staff to Kawungan SS: Ms Pinder (Prep U) Mrs O’Brien (4U) Mrs Euler (internal relief teacher) Mr Bulger (Deputy Principal Years 5/6) Each of these teachers have had a great start to the year and are thoroughly enjoying being a part of the Kawungan school community. School Traffic Obviously the streets in and around our school become very busy at drop off and pick up times, particularly at the start of the new school year as new routines are established with your students. I cannot stress how important it is to abide by basic road rules to ensure that everyone can exit our school in a safe and timely manner. Some traffic reminders: Students and parents to cross roads under the direction and supervision of our school crossing supervisors Park only in areas that are clearly identified as parking Please refrain from parking across the driveway of local residents (we have had reports of local residents unable to leave their house because of this) Parades Parades commenced this week with parents more than welcome to attend throughout the year. Parade is held over 3 separate days in the following format: Years 5 and 6 Monday Years 3 and 4 Tuesday Prep Year 2 Thursday Parades are a wonderful opportunity to celebrate student achievement as well as reinforce our school values of being safe, being respectful and being responsible. We look forward to a rich and engaging year of learning for all of our students. Mark Jones PRINCIPAL

Our P&C now meets on the 2nd Wednesday of every month at 6pm in the back of the library. We would love you to join us! Or if you would like to help out in any way, your contribution would be greatly appreciated. Please email us at [email protected]. The Kawungan Lunchbox

Our tuckshop, ‘The Lunchbox’, is open 4 days a week, from Tuesdays through to Fridays, and opens at 8:15am ready for the day’s orders. Money should be

placed in a paper bag and clearly marked with the child’s name, class, 1st or 2nd break, and their order. Over the counter sales are now available both breaks for students in Years 1 to 6, (Prep students are not offered over the counter sales at any time). child and our school by encouraging banking each week. Team P&C

STUDENT LEADERS As 2021 student leaders, we are excited about what the year has in store for us and our school. We had our first leadership meeting on Friday 29th

January, and established rosters for first break games and supervision for Prep to Year 4 students, before school runners club and after school house point collection during hill supervision. We are enthusiastic about attending the GRIP Leadership meeting in Maryborough on Monday 15th February. We look forward to developing more leadership skills and learning more about leadership at this workshop. Hopefully we can then apply some of our learnings on our leadership journey throughout 2021.

  • SCHOOL NEWS Procedures for Early Student Departures From time to time, you will no doubt need to collect your child from school early due to appointments and commitments outside of school. If your child needs to leave the school, could we please ask that you either:

Provide your child with a note which they can give to their teacher in the morning with a departure time.

Call the school at least 1 hour prior to departure so we can notify the class teacher

All students leaving the school early and coming to school late must be signed in/out at the office. This assists the school in obtaining an accurate record of students currently at the school in case of an emergency. Parking Parents are reminded that the area in front of the ECDP (Early Childhood Developmental Program) closest to Frangipani Street is a No Parking area. The area is for the exclusive use of parents picking up/dropping off students who attend this unit. Remember, many of these students have severely restricted mobility. No student drop-off/pick-up is permitted on the school grounds, including staff car park and circular driveway near the admin block. In special circumstances, permits may be granted by application through the school office. Pedestrian Access

We need to create and maintain the safest possible environment for our students. This includes using the appropriate entries and exits to the

school. Please note the main vehicular entrance to the school is NOT to be used by pedestrians. KindyLinQ KindyLinQ starts next Thursday for 3 years olds. Contact the office if interested. Koala Joeys Koala Joeys is a playgroup that is run on a Wednesday morning from 9-10:30am. We invite all families to attend this free event. Pack a snack for your child and come and meet some other families in the school. The program helps to develop children’s fine and gross motor skills. The children

engage in some singing and story activities. The group meets in the building near the Prep playground and will start next Wednesday, 10th February. Change of Details Please take a moment to reflect on what contact information you believe the school has about your child. It is vital that the school be advised of any changes of detail for both students and parents. Please ensure that address, phone, emergency contact & medication details are current. Classroom Protocols Should you have any concerns about your child’s progress or welfare, please ensure that the first point of contact is your child’s teacher. It is not uncommon to find classroom doors closed before school. This is a sign that the teacher is engaged in activities preparing for the day. Once the door has been opened, teachers are then in a position to accept students and parents into the room. Your cooperation is appreciated. Parents are also asked to keep young children off the playground equipment before and after school in the interest of health and safety (particularly around the junior school area). Absenteeism It is compulsory for all children between the ages of 6 and 16 to attend school in Queensland. Parents are responsible for informing the school, either by note (preferred) or by phone (call or SMS), the reason for any student absence.

PE NEWS We’re off to a great start this term with most of our students being responsible bringing their hats, drink bottles and helmets (Year 3s) to their Physical Education lessons. There are a few things happening this term in regards to fitness, with many of the Hervey Bay District sport trials happening and our fun run at the end of this term. This is a great time for our students to start training if they are keen to improve their fitness for the various sports and events. Jogging around the block or yard a couple of times a week is a great start. There is also parkrun available every Saturday. Mrs Robertson recommends running to

  • either the 2km mark or halfway and then walking/jogging back to the finish. Kawungan had a great turn out at parkrun on the weekend with 8 staff and students attending and many families spotted also, well done!

  • CHAPPY CHAT

It’s so good to be back! I trust you all had an amazing holiday and are ready to face 2021!

Welcome to our new teachers, I trust you are feeling at home here. Congratulations to our 2021 student leaders. I look forward to seeing how you develop and grow throughout the year. For those who are new to school a special welcome and let me introduce myself. I am Chappy M, the school chaplain and what that means in a nutshell, is that I am here as a support to students, parents and teachers. This covers the social, emotional and spiritual aspects. Throughout the year, I run various activities and programs as well as meet with students on a one-on-one basis. Some of the issues we look at are:

    Friendships

    Anger Management

    Anxiety

    Grief

    Bullying

Resilience and more. Should you wish for your child to participate in any of these or if you yourself would like to see me, feel free to contact the school. I am here on Mondays and Tuesdays. I am also able to provide you with school supplies and second hand uniforms should you need. Please do not feel embarrassed to ask, I would rather they go to a person who needs them than they just sit in my cupboard. Parent Tip 101 Your child is unique and special. He/She has been given many special talents and skills, as well as likes and dislikes. Value them for their differences and encourage them to persevere each day. Remember, they are not you. Lead by example, after all you are a role model.

Have a great week and term.
