History
In 1876 education began on our site
making it the oldest Catholic school in
New Zealand. Originally it was a boy's
only school named St Paul's and then
in 1987 the boy's and girl's Catholic
high schools combined, new buildings
were erected and Kavanagh College
was established.

Student Welfare
Homestay
Student safety and welfare is paramount. We offer a safe and caring environment for our
students and can provide same language support when necessary. Kavanagh College is a
signatory of the Ministry of Education Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International
Students. Copies of the Code of Practice are available at school or on the Ministry web site
www.minedu.govt.nz.
The Director of International Students takes care of the Pastoral needs of students, the Head
Teacher of ESOL is responsible for academic programmes and the Homestay Co-ordinator
supervises our homestay families.
At Kavanagh we understand the importance of a happy and successful homestay experience
for students. We endeavour to accommodate students with families from the school
community to give them a traditional Kiwi experience. Homestay is full board, you will have
your own room and you will provided three meals a day. We have a dedicated homestay
coordinator who offers support to homestay families and students.
Kavanagh College has a roll of 880 domestic students and we have a limit on International
enrolments, we also limit the number of students from any one country. Our limits ensure we
can provide a high level of care to each student.

I do not think I will forget such an
incredible experience that was filled with
surprise and laughter. Everyone seemed to
be kind and friendly, what's more, you will be
so grateful that KC is creating such a pure
English environment for International
Students, giving us assistance generously. No
matter who you meet, they always have a
smile. Come and share this fantastic school,
no matter where you are from!"
(Stephen, China, age 18)

When I left Brazil, I was excited to come to another
country and another school, and I know that when I
go home I will miss the school, my host family and all
my friends. KC is a good school for International students
to learn English; the teachers are patient and always help
with everything. Thanks to all KC! I will never forget the
time I spent here!” (Eloisa, Brazil, age 16)
I've been here at KC for two and a half years. I
found it is a fantastic thing meeting people from
overseas and getting on with them! It was
really enjoyable spending time and having
great experiences at Kav, which I never had
before. I am proud to meet you all in my life in
NZ!" (Arisa, Japan, age 18)
I came to NZ mainly to improve my English and
get the experience of being in another country
with a different culture. The students at KC are
really nice and treat you with respect, you can
easily find new friends here. The teachers help you
with any problem you might have and I really
improved my English. Thanks, Kavanagh!”
(Lucas, Germany, age 17)
