From the Principal
Term 1 has been a busy time at Katherine High School, with measurable gains in a
number of areas. Significantly has been the results of our focus on attendance and
quality of teaching. Each day over the last month has seen a large improvement in
lesson change over times, to the extent that very few students are being
suspended for truancy.
While there has been a real focus on attendance, there has been a large amount of
time spent on reducing the amount of damage to our school grounds caused after
hours. Our work here, supported by the local police force, has also seen a
remarkable improvement. Vandalism and damage has been reduced to almost zero
in the last few weeks.
Across the term our students have participated in a range of activities and have
been recognized in many ways for outstanding achievement. At the beginning of
the year I witnessed graduating students from KHS being recognised in the Top 5
ATAR recipients for the Northern Territory and a number of students who achieved
ATARs in the 80s.
Camps, sporting events, visitations, overnight events, Student Leadership Council,
winning the interschool swimming carnival, Battle of the Bands, Youth Week are
but some of the events of significance that have occurred over the past term.
I wish everyone a pleasant break between Term 1 and 2 and hope that everyone
comes back refreshed after the Easter long weekend.

Middle Years classes Term 2
This year students have been placed in Year 8 and 9 core classes based on their
PAT M, PAT R and ON Demand test results, along with recommendations from
teachers and their academic progress. Similar data for all students in Year 7 has
now been collected and we are in a position to review the makeup of our Year 7
classes.
There will be some changes to core classes in Years 7, 8 and 9 in Term 2 as we
continue to place students in the class that best fits their learning needs. New
timetables will be issued to affected students at the beginning of Term 2.
If you have questions regarding the process of class allocations, please contact me
via email or telephone.

Un-notified Collection of Students
If students are required to leave School grounds for appointments or are required to leave early, it is vital that parents/caregivers notify the Front Office by 8.25am that day. If notification has not been received by this time, parents/caregivers will be required to wait for an Assistant Principal to arrange for the student to be collected from class. Emergency situations will be dealt with accordingly.
2016 Yearbook
Copies of the 2016 Katherine High
School yearbook are available from the
school Library or Front Office.
We also have a small quantity of 2013,
2014 & 2015 Yearbooks available.

Year 7 Rainbow Challenge
Last week Year 7 Home Economics
completed a rainbow challenge where
they had to come up with a salad recipe
using one fruit or vegetable from each
colour of the rainbow. This concept is
from Nutrition Australia and
encourages us all to eat as many
colours as we can each day to
guarantee a good supply of vital
minerals, vitamins and nutrients. The
students loved creating and were happy
to try unusual grains to accompany
their salads such as couscous and
quinoa. As you can see the results were
colourful and tasty.

Year 8 Update
In Year 8 Extended Home Group we
have been focusing on goal setting.
Setting goals gives students a long term
vision and gives us all a reason to stay
motivated for the short term. Students
have been deciding what they want to
do with their careers and have been
setting their goals based on these ideas.
We will revisit our goals in Term 2 and
figure out what we need to do to
achieve our goals.

Year 9 Update
Over the past two weeks the Year 9 cohort have learnt Cornell notetaking and how to set achievable goals. Note taking should be much more than purely writing. The 80/20 principle is an effective listening and note taking technique. It involves listening attentively for 80% of the time and writing/posing questions/recording/drawing for 20% of the time. Students need to be taught that achieving the goals they set for themselves each term is a journey of setting short term (two week) goals. Accomplishing them and then setting new ones. Students should set process goals – setting little things to achieve regularly to move you toward your goals.
Year 9 Melbourne Canberra
Fundraising
On Saturday March 25th students that will attend the Year 9 Melbourne Canberra Trip held a BBQ to fundraise. They were a fantastic team and raised $203 to go towards the KHS winter jackets. A very special thank you to Brumbys and Town and Country Butchers for supporting KHS and parent helpers Clare Pearce, Karen Harley and Steven Fleming for their student wrangling, BBQ skills and organisational support.
There will be more fundraising adventure in Term 2 so please keep an eye on the newsletter and come and support our wonderful students.

Youth Week 2017
On Monday April 3rd Katherine High School
hosted a Pop up Youth EXPO.
We had representation from a number of
groups including, Katherine Police station,
Anglicare, YouthworX and Centrelink. They
provided information to the students about
youth services in our region. Supplies for a
sausage sizzle were donated by Sandra Nelson,
MLA for Katherine. STARS students kindly
cooked the BBQ.

Certificate 1 in Business
During week 8, 11 students from the Katherine Stars Foundation took part in the
Certificate 1 in Business Course run by GTNT. The course took place at Charles
Darwin University, Katherine and ran over the entire week. Each day the students
were introduced to a new topic relating to business and how to become a
competent worker. This included resume building, identifying OHS hazards and
how they can be fixed and basic communication skills. By doing this course
students became more aware of the life skills they possess and how they can be
transferred into a work environment. Students will have one more week of
training in May before receiving their certificate. Well done girls.

Youth Week SLC Events 2017
This year Katherine High celebrated National Youth Week during week 10 of Term 1. Youth Week celebrates people from the ages of 12 to 25 and their accomplishments and skills as well as improving these skills.
The SLC ran two sports events, Seniors and Staff vs Juniors dodgeball and Seniors vs Staff indoor soccer, and a Pixar short film event. All of these events had a great turnout. The SLC would like to thank everyone who came along and participated and everyone who helped run the events.

Inter-Stars Middle Years Sports
In Week 8, the Stars Foundation took a group of students who have worked to attain an attendance above 80% this term, and consistently demonstrated our Stars values of respect, honesty, commitment and pride, on a trip to Darwin to participate in an inter- Stars school sports afternoon at Casuarina Senior College. The girls were separated into small groups which allowed them to interact with other Stars girls from around Darwin to play some friendly games of indoor soccer and basketball. The girls also enjoyed a swim at Leanyer Water Park, and a visit to the new Flip Out trampoline centre in recognition for their efforts this term. Well done ladies, and we’re looking forward to the Inter-Stars Cricket competition next term in Darwin! Tamara Rosas Stars Foundation [email protected]
Project Rockit
‘Empowering young people to stand up and lead
change’
This week the school had a visit from Project Rockit.
Project Rockit is a not for profit organisation that
works with young people across Australia to inform
them of the risks and dangers of cyberbullying. Their
presentations create a safe space to discuss tips for
preventing cyberbullying.
The presenters (Archie and Ash) engaged our Year 7
and 8 students with a 90 minute interactive
workshop. Archie and Ash outlined practical ways of
dealing with online bullying, enabling young people to
become empowered and believe they could make a
difference and stand up to cyber bullies.
Thank you Project Rockit!

Stage 1 and Stage 2
Home Economics
Over the past two weeks the two Senior Years
Home Economics classes have been
consolidating the skills they have learnt
throughout the term.
In Stage 1 our analysis of Fast food
alternatives was put aside while we learned a
tricky cooking technique- making the Italian
classic-Risotto!
All the students were very patient when
stirring their rice which resulted in a beautiful
creamy textured dish flavoured with chicken,
spinach and parmesan cheese- Bellisimo!
