Rabbits to Elephants in 60 Years

The globe’s enormous resource of natural gas (Shale Gas and Natural Gas Hydrates) when impacted with dramatic new technology and intense motivation (economics, environmental, political, cultural and energy security) will inevitably produce change. We must not let that change take us by surprise.

Challenges and Opportunities in Liquid-rich Shale/Tight Oil Plays

As our industry is transitioning from dry gas to liquid-rich shale/tight oil plays due to large price gap, we encountered many technical challenges from as basic as resource characterization to how to optimize production strategies. Many methodologies which were developed for shale gas evaluation are either inadequate or incorrect for liquid-rich plays. These include core, petrophysical, geochemical and fluid/PVT analyses, etc.. Furthermore, the production mechanism of liquid hydrocarbons in nanometer pore-throats is still poorly understood. Important questions such as relative contribution from Darcy’s flow vs. diffusivity in production and the role of wettability have not been resolved. Another major challenge is the very low recovery factors expected from these plays that create the opportunity for an enhanced recovery scheme. This presentation will focus on the tight oil resources in N. America and the important reservoir attributes which makes these plays successful. Further new global tight oil opportunities and cost projection to develop these plays will also be discussed.

Energy Pipelines – Lifelines for Modern society

The presentation will provide an overview of energy pipelines in North America, development process for pipeline project, and operation of pipeline system. Energy pipelines transport oil, gas and refined products from production fields to processing and refinery facilities, markets and ultimately to end users that include almost everyone in modern society. This important infrastructure is not only vital to the life style of modern society it is also essential for our economy and trade. The development of pipeline project is a long and complicated process with many challenges. The main steps and considerations will be briefly reviewed and discussed. An overview of pipeline operation will also be provided to highlight the focus on pipeline safety and integrity.

The Linkages between BC LNG Projects and the Future of Natural Gas Liquids in Western Canada

From the 1970s to the 2000s, Alberta has seen expanding hydrocarbon developments in several areas including the development of conventional gas resources (drilling); gas plant construction; gas, liquids and ethane pipeline systems; and a world scale petrochemical industry. Natural gas liquids (NGLs) are being captured in shallow cut field operations, straddle plant facilities and the emergence of expanding deep cut gas plant facilities. However, the future feedstock supply for the existing petrochemical industry and any potential of an expansion of this industry is now becoming less certain. The emergence of the Marcellus shale gas play in the United States is slowly reducing the need for Canadian exports to that market. Lower exports lead to reduced drilling activity which leads to lower flows at the straddle plants. The game of last resort may be the Asia-Pacific LNG market… maybe? Many of the gas developments within the Montney play of British Columbia are earmarked for the future LNG terminals to be constructed at Kitimat and Prince Rupert. The Montney play is a world scale liquids rich resource which should mean new liquid feedstocks for the petrochemical industry. Are you sure?

Risks and Controls for Private Companies' Investment in Canadian Energy Industry

With a stable and fast-growing economy, Canada holds a good investment environment. The energy industry is a high risk and high technology industry, which provides high returns for its investors. All successful investors must understand the risks and controls behind their investments. I cannot guarantee that I will identify all risks, but I can share some important information with you to help you leverage and reduce your risks, such as industry risks, capital risks, environmental risks, geological risks, and engineering risks.

The Investment Canada Act and Its Impact on Foreign Investment in the Energy Industry in Canada

Investors need to be aware of the significant restrictions the Canadian government places on foreign investment in Canada, particularly in the energy sector. While the government has for years taken a “hands off” policy towards foreign investment in Canada, recent takeovers of Canadian businesses have led the Canadian government to reconsider that stance, and to place significant additional requirements and restrictions on certain investments in Canada. This presentation will provide an overview of foreign investment considerations in Canada under the Investment Canada Act. The legal issues that will be considered will include the types of investments that require approval or review, the review process, the restrictions that may be placed on investments, and special rules for state owned enterprises
