Inspired by artists seen at recent State Conventions, our

anything you have created whether a painting, a scrapbook, a
quilt, or even a collection of photographs! If you are like me,
you could bring something you created long ago OR you can
bring a piece of artwork or music or jewelry or anything that
has significant meaning for you. We will be sharing in small
groups to learn about each other and we can debrief about our
recent service project at Strickland Elementary.

I would like to extend my thanks to all of the Kappa
Phi members who got up early on Saturday, September 20th to
attend the Fall Workshop. Those in attendance were: Sarah
Eaton, Vicky Herr, Susan Marchus, Nancy Shaheen, Laura
Harbin, Pat Bielamovich, Dorothy Carroll, Tina Flatt, Susan
Price, and Debbie Moss. We had enough members present to
cover almost all of the workshop sessions! At our next meeting,
they will tell you a little about what they learned. The name
tags were especially nice, thanks to Vicky! It was not only a
fun morning but it was an opportunity for us to learn how to do
our jobs for this biennium; and we made new friends. I
especially enjoy our State President, Nancy Newton. She is
approachable and fun to be around, and you can tell that she
really wants to see DKG continue to grow.
Each time I attend a function with other DKG chapter
presidents, I realize that we are very fortunate to have such a
terrific chapter. We are accomplishing the work of DKG - and
we are having fun doing it!
Our “Hospitality Lounge” as part of our Strickland project was
a success. Thank you for supporting the project with your
donations and as hosts for each lounge. Vicky has prepared a
schedule beginning in October for those of us who will be
volunteering at Strickland. If you want to volunteer and your
name is not on the list, please contact Vicky.
My challenge to each of you is to share the experience that we
have with others. Please bring your DKG Prospect Card to the
October meeting. All we are asking you to do is to nominate
someone that you would like to see as a member of Kappa Phi.
The only requirements for membership are that the person be:
employed as a professional educator at the time of her
election; or
retired from an educational position.
We will send out letters to your prospective members and invite
them to an orientation meeting. We will be extending them an
honor to be a member of an organization that educates, inspires
and encourages women educators. It’s a win/win proposition!!!
See you all on October 2nd! Debbie

“The financial assistance you have provided me has greatly lifted the financial burden of private education off of me and my
family and has allowed us to get a little excited for this new season of our lives. Your generosity is truly inspirational. I hope to
one day pay it forward! “

DELTA KAPPA GAMMA
INTERNATIONAL KAPPA PHI CHAPTER
MINUTES FOR Sept 4, 2014
The meeting of Kappa Phi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International was held on September 4, 2014 , at Strickland Elementary
School, with 9 members in attendance.
Pat Bielamowicz read a thank-you letter from Victoria Lassiter, one of our
Grant-in-Aid recipients from last year.
Laura Harbin read aloud the minutes from the August meeting. Debbie
Moss amended those minutes to state that Susan Marchus will be chairing
legislation, and Sammie Perry will chair music for the coming year. The minutes were approved as amended.
Treasurer Pat Bielamowicz announced that Helen Marsee and Beth Howard will not be rejoining Kappa Phi this year. She also presented the
budget for 2014-2015. We discussed budgeting expenses for an additional
person to attend the convention next summer. It was decided to make this determination closer to the convention time, depending on available
money. Susan Marchus moved and Celeste Craig seconded that the budget
be filed as accepted; the motion passed.
Debbie informed us of a plan to build our membership. She handed out
prospect cards to each of us and asked that we fill in prospective member names and return to her or Dorothy Carroll. Each card will result in
generation of a letter of invitation. Debbie plans to put this letter online.
Susan Marchus passed around a directory listing and asked that we make
any corrections needed for the yearbook. Susan also took our pictures for
the yearbook.
Vicky Herr led a discussion regarding the schedule for volunteering at Strickland Elementary for the coming year. How often we have to come
depends on the number of volunteers. Thus far, Vicky, Susan Lyndsey,
Barbara Taylor, Pat Bielamowicz, Debbie Moss, and Susan Marchus have agreed to volunteer. Laura Harbin and Sally Saar will be backups. Vicky
will prepare and email a schedule.
Debbie informed us of a letter from Alpha State President Nancy Newton
asking for our input regarding a possible bid for hosting the International
Convention in Texas in 2018. Members present responded favorably to this suggestion.
Debbie brought to our attention another letter from Nancy Newton regarding copyright issues. Each chapter must sign a waiver exempting
the state organization from liability. This waiver must be signed by the
chapter president and recording secretary.
Debbie reminded us that the Fall Workshop is September 20, 2014, from
8:00 am to 12:45 pm at Plano Senior High School. Anyone who has not already registered may do so at the door; the fee is $12.00. For those
interested, a carpool will leave Marie Huie Special Education Center at
7:30 am.
Our meeting next month is scheduled to be at Wonderful World of
Cooking. We have to guarantee attendance of at least15 people, and the price range is $14.95-$16.95. All present agreed to this. Debbie said
there will be a show-and-tell program to tie the meeting into information
about a Delta Kappa Gamma gallery which she will explain at the October meeting. Details about this meeting will be forthcoming.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:30.

DELTA KAPPA GAMMA
INTERNATIONAL KAPPA PHI CHAPTER
MINUTES FOR August 21, 2014
The meeting of Kappa Phi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society
International was held on August 21, 2014, at the home of Betty Shaw, with
10 members in attendance.
President Debbie Moss welcomed everyone. Sammie Perry moved and
Susan Marcus seconded her motion to accept the minutes from the previous meeting as published in the newsletter; the motion was approved.
Treasurer Pat Bielamowicz provided information regarding the chapter treasury. Dues will again be $90.00, although since we have lost five
members, we will be $400.00 short of last year’s budget. The Finance
Committee met in August to audit the treasurer’s records and to assist in formulating a budget. It was decided that the newsletter editor will be
reimbursed for expenses. Two more members are required to be on the
checking account. Sammie Perry moved that Vicki Herr be removed from the account and that Debbie Moss and Laura Harbin be added to it. This
motion was seconded by Sara Eaton and approved. Pat presented the
proposed budget and asked that all members review it prior to the September meeting.
First Vice-President Tina Flatt presented program ideas for the 2014-2015 meeting year. Sara Eaton moved and Pat Bielamowicz seconded to set the
regular monthly meeting dates by the September meeting of said year. The
motion was accepted.
In Second Vice-President Dorothy Carroll’s absence, Debbie Moss
presented a brief activity in which each member stated what Delta Kappa Gamma means to her. Debbie also recommended that a letter be sent to
prospective members stating that they have been recommended by a DKG
member for membership in the organization. She suggested each member try to write someone to become a
member, including day care workers, health educators, and librarians. She
urged us to grow the membership.
Nancy Shaheen will be presenting Global Awareness at the September
workshop.
Corresponding Secretary Susan Price noted that no correspondence has been
received.
Susan Price would like someone to take over the newsletter for this
biennium.
Susan Marcus will be doing the Yearbook.
Nancy Shaheen will do achievement awards.
Laura Harbin and Sammi Perry will be on the Finance/Audit Committee.
We still need volunteers for updating bylaws, helping with membership, legislation, music, and scholarships.
Debbie reminded us that the Fall Workshop is September 20th.
The next meeting will be at Strickland Elementary on September 4th. Come
at 4:30 to help set up the lounges at Strickland and McLaughlin with healthy snacks and then stay for the meeting. Tina will send out reminders and
details.
Meeting was Adjourned

Strickland Project: We will be assisting at Strickland Elementary School again this year. DeDe Lacy, the principal, is delighted we are coming back. We will be on campus on Tuesdays. With several volunteering, the
commitment is looking like each volunteer will be on campus once every 6-7 weeks, so if you can help out, please contact Tina or Vicky. Thank you to all who brought food and gave of their time to
feed the staffs of Strickland and McLaughlin during their Open Houses. The staffs were thrilled with the good food, and we got to meet some very dedicated teachers.

Area 9 Workshop
Kappa Phi was in force at The Delta Kappa Gama Area 9 Workshop that was held in Plano, TX.
Workshops from Technology to Music, from By-laws to Legislation, from Ceremonies to Archives
and Necrology and many topics in between were held, as well as workshops for guiding our new
officers in how to best pursue their tasks. And we had folks present to cover a whole lot of them. As
Debbie said, Kappa Phi was well represented.

OTHER NEWS By this time the DKG NEWS and BULLETIN should have arrived in your mail. You may
remember reading in a prior DKG NEWS, an article regarding empowering Girl Scouts. In keeping
with that theme, a local GSA Troop led in the Presentation of the Flags at Saturday’s Workshop.
In the current Sep/Oct DKG NEWS, please note the article on page 7 entitled “Got Talent”.
That is the inspiration for our upcoming Oct Meeting. There are many interesting articles to read
and review, but take note of the inspiration found in “Strengthening our Society” at the bottom of
page 11and then continued info regarding Puebla on page 12.
“The Bulletin” has several interesting articles including one regarding Dr Marzano and
another on assessing student in the digital age. Of particular interest to me is “Raising Henry: A
Memoir of Motherhood, Disability and Discovery.
