Teen DriversIf you are a teenager on the brink of entering adulthood, you are probably excited about the prospect of obtaining your driver’s license. Fortunately, the process of doing so is relatively easy. This guide will outline each step for obtaining your learner’s permit and eventually your license.

Because vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among people between 15 and 20, Kansas implemented the Graduated Driver License (GDL) program to improve teen driving laws with the aim of reducing traffic crashes and fatalities involving young drivers. Therefore, you will need to complete a three-stage process before you get your actual driver’s license. As a teen driver, it is important that you carefully read through each step and fully understand the requirements that each step entails. This will avoid you any complications and prepare you to take on your responsibilities on the road.

Be at least 14 years of age.

Visit a driver’s license office.

Prove your identity.

• If you are younger than 16, your parent or guardian must present photo identification.

• Click here for acceptable identity documents.

Pass the vision and written tests.

• Driver education is not required. However, if you completed a course and present the certificate, you do not have to pass the written test.

Have your parent or guardian sign your application if you are 14 or 15 years of age.

Instruction Permit

With this permit, you will be able to practice driving supervised by a licensed driver who is at least 21 years of age and sitting next to you. You are not allowed to use wireless communication devices, including cellphones, while driving unless you are reporting an emergency. You must hold the permit for one year before you are able to advance to a restricted license.

To apply for an instruction permit, you must:

You may not carry any passengers under 18 years of age, unless they are your siblings.

You must hold this license until you turn 16. Additionally, you will need to complete a 50-hour affidavit of supervised driving practice without any traffic violations before moving to the next phase.

Less Restricted License

Once you have met the above requirements, you will be able to apply for a license with less restricted driving privileges. With this license, you will have more freedom to drive while you prepare to hold your unrestricted license. You must hold this license for six months or until you turn 17. If you do not have any traffic violations, the restrictions will no longer apply.

Driver’s license (21 and older): $18

Driving Exam

Once you pass the other two tests, you need to take and pass a driving exam before getting your driver license. All drivers are required to take it, regardless of their age. This test will evaluate your driving skills by asking you to perform some driving tasks and maneuvers. The car will be checked for safety before you can take the test.

As with the written exam, you have four chances to pass the driving test. If you fail the fourth time, you must wait six months before testing again.

Photo fee: $8

Testing fee: $3

Re-exam fee: $1.50

All DriversRoads are not always safe. Therefore, it is in your best interest to fully prepare for whatever may be in your way before you begin driving. When you become a driver, you take responsibility not only for your own safety but also for the safety of your passengers, the vehicles around you and any pedestrians in your way. In order to best prepare yourself for that huge responsibility, you should first hold an instruction permit to practice and enhance your driving skills.

If you are already 17 years of age and did not go through the Graduated Driver’s License (GDL) process, you may hold an instruction permit before applying for the unrestricted license if you want to prepare to take the tests. The process is identical to the instruction permit for teens. However, you do not have a wireless communication restriction. You also do not need parental approval and are not required to hold it for any specific amount of time. However, you must still pass the vision, written and driving tests before applying for a license.

Vision Screening

In order to have an unrestricted license, your vision must be at least 20/40 in one eye. If the vision screening indicates that you need lenses to improve your vision acuity, you have to wear lenses to drive. If you fail the vision screening, you need to have your eyes examined by an eye specialist and present the report to the license examiner. If the report says that your vision is enough to drive safely, you will be allowed to continue with the other tests. If you need to wear corrective lenses or glasses, you must use them while you take any part of the driver license examination.

Written Exam

You will also have to take and pass a written test that will evaluate your ability to identify traffic signs by their shape, color or the symbol they display. In addition, you must answer questions regarding traffic laws and safe driving rules. You have four chances to pass the written exam. If you fail all four times, you will need to wait six months before taking the test again.

Driver’s Licensing FeesYou must pay the permit or license fee plus the photo and testing fees when you apply for a license or learner’s permit.

An expired license means a loss of freedom and the risk of getting a ticket if you attempt to drive beyond the grace period. Therefore, it is best to renew your license as soon as you receive the expiration notice or find that the expiration date is approaching. Before you renew your license, however, it is best that you thoroughly comprehend the process so that you can avoid any issues.

If you are younger than 21, your Kansas driver’s license will most likely expire on your 21st birthday. If you are 21 to 65 years old, it expires every six years, and if you are 65 years of age or older, it will expire every four years. Fortunately, the Kansas DMV mails a renewal notice approximately 30 days before the expiration date with information to renew your license.

Present proof of identity (you can use your expiring driver’s license), lawful status in the U.S., Kansas residency and a valid SSN from the acceptable documentation list.

Present your expiring or expired license.

In order to update your name, you will need to do so in person, as name changes cannot take place by phone or online.

Additionally, you must update your name with the Social Security Administration (SSA) before you attempt to change it on your driver’s license, as the DMV will verify your name change with the SSA before processing the update.

Provide documentation to verify your name change:

• A marriage license.

The suspension or revocation of your driver license is the consequence of traffic violations or numerous offenses in your record. If your license is suspended or revoked, your driving privileges are removed and you are not authorized to drive. To be able to drive again, you are required to reinstate your license if you are entitled to do so.

Many individuals are unaware of the difference between a suspended and a revoked license. A suspension is a temporary removal of your driving privileges, while revocation is the termination of said privileges. If your license is suspended, you must wait for the suspension period to expire and then request a reinstatement. If it is revoked, you will have to apply for a new license.

If you do not know the status of your license, you may need to do a status check by contacting a driver’s license office or buy a copy of your driver record online.

Reinstating your license will depend on the type of suspension you have. You will need to visit your local DMV office, pay the fees and follow the instructions you receive. In some cases, you may be able to make your driver’s license reinstatement payment online by using this page.

If you are not able to obtain a driver’s license or are simply not interested in driving, you may apply for a Kansas ID card instead. Having an ID card is essential for you to prove your identity when you visit the bank, travel or need to prove your identity.

When it comes to obtaining your ID card, the process is identical to that of obtaining your driver’s license, so you should simply follow the same steps outlined in the “Getting Your First Kansas License” section of this guide. When you apply for an ID, you will not be required to take driving tests, and your fees will be somewhat lower.

The most important consideration to keep in mind before you begin driving any vehicle is that both you and the vehicle are well prepared for any trip you make. This means checking and making any changes to your vehicle or your behavior to make sure that you are able to drive safely at all times.

Emergency KitOne of the essentials to safe driving is having a basic emergency kit available in your vehicle at all times. This kit should include basic items such as water, extra batteries, rope, a first aid kid, matches, a whistle, etc. During winter months it is also important to carry items such as blankets, non-perishable foods, extra gloves, socks and a shovel.

Winter DrivingOne of the most dangerous times to drive is during the winter, especially if you live in an area where it snows. Therefore, it is best to consider these tips to drive safely during the winter.

Avoid Rushing

Roads are often covered in snow and ice after it snows, so instead of driving fast and risking an accident in a rush to get to your destination, try leaving a few minutes earlier than usual. This will allow you to drive slower and help you avoid rushing other drivers by not tailgating them if they are going slower.

Do Not Panic If You Skid or Slip

In the case that your vehicle skids or slips while driving, make sure you do not panic and slam down on your brakes. Instead, all you need to do is apply slow and even pressure on your brakes until you stop. This will prevent you from spinning further out of control.

Check Your Vehicle

Before you even leave your house, make sure your vehicle’s controls, brakes, tank, tires, antifreeze, exhaust, etc. are all working properly. It is also important that you remove all ice and snow from your car before you begin driving. This prevents the snow from blocking your view while you drive.

Drinking and DrivingEvery year, thousands are killed as a result of drinking and driving. These deaths can be very easily prevented. It only requires that you plan ahead of time by taking certain steps.

Even before you begin drinking, you should arrange for someone else to be the designated driver. In the case that your designated driver also becomes intoxicated, it is important that you arrange to take a taxi or another safe form of transportation. If you see someone who you suspect is drunk, and that person exhibits signs of intoxication while driving, such as making wide turns, weaving, swerving, braking erratically, turning abruptly, etc. call 911 and notify the proper authorities about the drunk driver. Also make sure to avoid drunk drivers on the road to ensure your own safety.

Using Your CellphoneDriving while using your cellphone is one of the most dangerous actions you can take because during the few seconds your attention is diverted to your phone, a major accident could occur. Therefore, make sure you do not text, use the internet or make calls while you drive to prevent accidents.

What to AvoidDriving is not always a relaxing experience. There are certain actions that can be both an annoyance and a danger to you while on the road driving. These issues are often avoidable if you make sure to take the necessary steps towards preventing them, as well as stopping them after you discover them.

Car Accidents

The best way to avoid car accidents is to ensure that your vehicle is safe to drive and will not cause you any problems. To do this, you only need to regularly check that your brakes are functioning properly, your tires are inflated and not worn out, and that the steering and suspensions are maintained regularly by a mechanic and will not fail while you drive, especially at high speeds.

Wasting Gas

Due to the price of gas, you may begin to start looking for ways to save on expensive trips to the pump. Fortunately, saving on gas is possible if you take a few steps toward ensuring that you waste less gas.

Some of the ways you can start saving gas are by not using air conditioning, not leaving your engine running and avoiding driving above 60 mph. These actions are preventable and not necessary for you to drive. Therefore, you can quickly reduce the amount of gas you waste.

Another way to save on gas is to make sure that your vehicle is functioning properly. You can do this by checking that your tires are properly inflated and that you keep to car’s maintenance schedule.

Aggressive Driving

Aggressive driving and drivers should both be avoided to prevent any on-road aggression or accidents. Aggressive driving is categorized as exhibiting behaviors such as tailgating, verbal or physical harassment of another driver, preventing another driver from merging or passing, etc.

If you are an aggressive driver, you are putting others at risk every time you do any of the above behaviors. If you encounter a frustrating situation on the road, instead of becoming aggressive, take a moment to breathe and relax before moving on.
