Introduction• Project-28 Kamorta class corvettes - INS Kamorta, INS Kadmatt, INS Kiltan and INS Kavaratti - are anti-submarine warships with very low under water noise signature and low radar cross section.• They are the first stealth corvettes designed and built indigenously.

Order

•Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata has orders to build four Project 28 Kamorta class ASW Corvettes for the Indian Navy at a cost of approximately Rs. 1,700 crore each. •The ships have with more than 80 percent indigenous content and are capable of fighting under NBC (nuclear, biological and chemical) environment.

Features• The ships are the first in India to feature a carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) superstructure integrated with the steel hull of the ship.• Besides reducing the weight, the use of composites improves stealth characteristics and reduces life cycle maintenance costs.• The P-28 ASW corvettes are equipped with a 'rail-less helo traversing system' to handle a helicopter on board the ship, foldable hangar door, and use of indigenous DMR 249A steel and carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP).

Stealth Design

•The P 28 class ships feature the ‘X’ form of hull and superstructure which give the ships a low radar cross section. •Also, the hull form is highly efficient with excellent sea-keeping and maneuverability characteristics •The ships anti-submarine warfare capability is largely achieved due to the low signature of radiated underwater noise.
