Juno History• The Juno Awards are named in honor of Pierre Juneau, who was the very first President of the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission and former President of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. In the early 1970s, Juneau was the architect of the CRTC’s Canadian content regulations which require that a certain percentage of radio and television time be devoted to programming or music which is produced in Canada. This action created a market for Canadian music and fueled the subsequent boom in music production. In 1971, Juneau received a special Juno Award, being named “Canadian music industry Man of the Year.”

• The Juno Award was originally called the RPM Gold Leaf Awards, created by “RPM Magazine” publishers. They were awarded for the first time in 1970. That evening, 250 people showed up at the doors, which was twice the number of people who had actually been invited. Anne Murray had the flu and almost didn’t make it to the ceremony. The name was changed to Juno Awards the following year, simplifying Juneau’s name.

• The ceremony was broadcast on TV for the first time in 1975. CBC had the rights at the time

• Starting in 1964, “RPM Magazine” polled its readers to determine the best artists in Canada, releasing the results in December. JUNO AWARDS HISTORY• Starting in 1964, “RPM Magazine” polled its readers to determine the best artists in Canada, releasing the results in December. From 1970 to 1973, winners of the Juno Awards were announced in “RPM Magazine” prior to the awards night. Starting in 1974, the award winners were not made public until the Juno ceremonies.• The first Juno Award trophies were constructed from walnut, stood 18 inches (46 cm) tall, and resembled a metronome. When the ceremonies were televised beginning in 1975, the award was redesigned and was made out of clear acrylic instead, while still retaining the metronome shape. In 2000, producers complained that the trophy didn’t look good on TV and they asked for a re-design. Ontario artist Shirley Elford designed the new award, made from glass. It depicts a human figure surrounded by a nickel-coated spiral (which is symbolic of a musical staff) situated on a base of aluminum.• The Juno Awards, customarily held in Toronto, were hosted outside of Toronto for the very first time in 1991, being held in Vancouver. Since then they’ve been held in cities from coast to coast. The ceremony did not return to Toronto until the year 2011, which marked the ceremony’s 40th anniversary.• George Wilson, who hosted for five consecutive years when the Juno Awards first began, has hosted more programs than anyone else. Burton Cummings comes in second place, with four appearances as host.• A Humanitarian Award was inaugurated in 2006. Bruce Cockburn was the first artist to be given this honor.• 1.6 million viewers watched the entire show in 2012, and 6.5 million viewers tuned in for at least part of the program.

“HYDE PARK ON HUDSON’’: Rather than merely doing an impersonation, Bill Murray makes a surprisingly credible Franklin Delano Roosevelt in director Roger Michell’s (“Notting Hill’’) portrait of the president during a weekend visit from British royalty (Samuel West, Olivia Colman) at his home in upstate New York. Not only is he concerned with affairs of state, but also with another affair ... specifically, the one he has with a distant cousin (Laura Linney). Olivia Williams and Elizabeth Wilson also star. DVD extras: two “making-of ’’ documentaries; audio commentary by Michell and producer

Kevin Loader; deleted scenes. ***

“BOSS: SEASON TWO’’: The sophomore season of the Starz drama series turned out to be its last, but not for any lack of memorable acting by Kelsey Grammer, still ferocious as imperious - and secretly ill - Chicago Mayor Tom Kane. The saga resumes with a shocking attack that has long-range effects on Kane and those closest to him ... though getting close to him is, admittedly, not an easy thing. Notable cast additions for this round include Sanaa Lathan as Kane’s chief of staff and Jonathan Groff (“Glee’’) as a relative newcomer to the political scene. Among other returnees are Connie Nielsen, Hannah Ware, Martin Donovan, Jeff Hephner, Kathleen Robertson and Troy Garity. ***

“INSIDE MEN’’: Initially shown last summer on BBC America, this well-written drama about acting on the evils of temptation casts Steven Mackintosh (“Luther’’), Ashley Walters and Warren Brown as employees of a British money-counting firm who decide to take advantage of their jobs. They plan a robbery that will make them immediately wealthy, but the moral and psychological fallout from the heist turns out to be much more than they bargained for. ***

“ORCHESTRA OF EXILES’’: The roots of the Israel Philharmonic are traced in director Josh Aronson’s documentary, detailing how Polish violinist Bronislaw Huberman spearheaded a four-year effort to spirit Jewish musicians out of Nazi Germany and assemble them into an orchestra. The resulting story is expectedly affecting on a number of levels, including the artistic and emotional ones. ***

“MOOGFEST 2006 LIVE’’: Fans of instrumental music - specifically that performed on the Moog synthesizer - are in for a treat from this event recorded at an appropriate site, New York’s B.B. King Blues Club. Keith Emerson (of Emerson, Lake & Palmer), “Miami Vice’’ composer Jan Hammer and Roger O’Donnell of the Cure are among the featured artists paying homage to Robert Moog and the unique instrument he invented. ***

ARIES (March 21-April 19): The light that drives you forward is within and can light the way. This week, a faster pace is necessary to deal with a plethora of commitments. The wheels are turning in a direction that leads to your dreams.TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Consideration conquers controversy. You will navigate the fast-moving twists and turns of the week ahead more easily if you make it a point of honor to remain cool and considerate of others.GEMINI (May 21-June 20): A little encouragement goes a long way. Look for ways to ignite your inspirations in the week ahead. When you are known throughout your community, you can more easily demonstrate integrity.CANCER (June 21-July 22): Ratchet up the rhythm. In the week ahead, get up and at ‘em, since shrinking violets risk being trampled by those in a hurry. If you are tempted to flirt, be sure to flirt with only the best people.LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): How you perceive the strength of the wind depends on your perspective this week. In front of the wind, you might view the onslaught as overwhelming. If moving with the wind, you might see it as an advantageous force.VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Enthusiasms can be contagious. You may stand out as someone’s hero or heroine. Someone can light a fire under your ambitions and provide concrete encouragement in the upcoming week.LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Sleepwalkers receive a wakeup call. Your fantasies can give you inspiration, but you could be blind to the drawbacks or oblivious to the obvious. A family situation could be mystifying in the week ahead.SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Turn your face to the sun like a sunflower. To grow and gain strength in the upcoming week, focus on what makes you happy. Be cautious of fantasies that thrive under a facade.SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): The darker the room, the more you appreciate light. A special someone can act as a good sounding board for creative ideas in the week ahead. Use your extra energy wisely, whether to entertain a lover or to find moneymaking ideas.CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Not everything important will be revealed at first glance. Take your time about making an important decision in the week ahead. You may learn that the more you resist change, the more things change.AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Press the “pause” button. During the week ahead, you may have more than one opportunity to take stock of your financial situation. Enjoy some needed relief from unexpected bills and responsibilities.PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): A visionary outlook or an artistic flair can be a valuable asset this week. Blend your energy with that of others to create a powerful force that can lead to success. Be open to new viewpoints.

AND THE WINNER IS…• The nominations for each year’s Junos are based on an eligibility period which lasts for 13 to 14 months, ending on the mid-November prior to the awards ceremony.• The Artist of the Year and Group of the Year nominations are determined by sales and a CARAS member vote. CARAS stands for Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, and they are responsible for the management and operation of the Juno Awards.• The nominees for Album of the Year and International Album of the Year are determined by sales figures. • The New Artist of the Year, New Group of the Year, Rock Album of the Year, and Pop Album of the Year are determined by sales in conjunction with a jury vote. TOP ARTISTS• At the 2007 ceremony, Nelly Furtado made Juno history by being the first nominee with multiple nominations to win every award for which she was nominated, including the two most prestigious honors, Album of the Year and Artist of the Year. The following year, Feist won all five categories in which she was nominated.• In 1992, Bryan Adams set a Juno Awards record by being nominated in seven categories. The following year, Céline Dion matched Bryan Adams’ previous record-setting seven nominations.• In 1985, singer k.d. lang famously accepted her award for Most Promising Female Vocalist dressed in a floor-length vintage satin wedding dress and cowboy boots. She bounded onto the stage, did a little hoedown, and (since she was voted ‘most promising’) made many promises, including promising to “continue to sing for only the right reasons” before curtsying to the crowd.• When Eddie Schwartz went to give his acceptance speech for the Most Promising Male Vocalist award in 1982, he took a big swig of beer on live TV. Afterwards two police officers reprimanded him, telling him that was illegal before finally releasing him back into the show.

ANECDOTES• In 1983, the hosts held up a compact disc and explained that this new medium was going to be the wave of the future. Host Burton Cummings had never seen a CD before then.• Bryan Adams was unable to attend due to air travel disruptions caused by the Icelandic ash cloud in 2010. He received his Allan Waters Humanitarian Award via satellite.• In 1990, Alannah Myles, who opened the broadcast with her hit “Love Is” did her own hair and makeup at home. She had forgotten to book a limo so her drummer had to drive her to the stage door, where she made it just in the nick of time.• When Shania Twain was hosting in 2003, she wore six custom-designed outfits emblazoned with different hockey team logos throughout the evening.• Ronnie Hawkins inadvertently tore a hole in his tuxedo pants onstage in 1981.

Hickory, 293015, is a 2 year old Tabby spayed female who is a petite, sweet-natured, snuggly kitty. She is living in a foster home while waiting for her furrever home, as she found the shelter very scary. She is a true lap cat who will curl up and keep you company at your computer. She is a beautiful girl with gorgeous green eyes and markings that resemble a Bengal, with the “mascara” stripping along her eyes and forelegs.Hickory is great around both cats and dogs and is a quiet, friendly girl who adores attention and will make a lovely addition to her new home. For more information please contact the shelter.

Delilah, 290030, is a 3 year old Peruvian female guinea pig that loves to explore! It’s important that her new home makes sure her environment will be safe so she won’t hurt herself. We are working with her on being handled because she

does become a little nervous when being picked up. Guinea pigs require a certain diet; fresh foods play an important role, along with unlimited quality timothy hay. Guinea pigs cannot synthesize their own vitamin C and must obtain this vital nutrient from food. If you would like to know about Delilah or perhaps meet her please stop by the shelter.

Q: I read in your column about J.C., from Oregon, whose dog was having breathing (problems), which sounds like what our dog used to experience. She’d been leash trained and always pulled. I began to think I was harming her and purchased a harness instead for our Beagle/Pekeapoo mix. Was I right, and could a harness be more useful? - M.W., Canton, IL A: “You’re right that constant pulling on the leash can affect a dog’s breathing, and even create pressure on the eyes (possibly leading to glaucoma),” says veterinary behaviorist Dr. Gary Landsberg, of Thornhill, Ontario, Canada. “A harness or head halter is definitely preferred.” Many veterinarians also believe that “choke collars” can cause or contribute to collapsing tracheas later in life. You could consult a dog trainer or certified dog behavior consultant on how to encourage your dog to walk on a loose leash. Clicker training can be a great tool for this. There are also some excellent video examples teaching techniques at www.abrionline.org.

Ace-king. This ever-enticing Texas hold ’em starting hand has many nicknames, myfavorite being “Anna Kournikova.” The comparison with the attractive former tennisplayer seems apt, since it’s been said of both the hand and Kournikova, “Looks good, never wins.”

The secret to profitably playing this feisty, fickle, ripe-with-potential hand lies inknowing your opponent’s hand range and betting patterns.

For example, it’s difficult to get paid off with A-K against a tight opponent who foldsace-rag and king-x hands to raises. It’s easier to get paid by opponents who play K-9and up for raises, as there are far more flops that can “hit” us AND hit this opponent —particularly if these comparatively loose opponents areaggressive. With such a range in variables, I feel that theless you use broad, sweeping guidelines for playing A-K,the better.

I recently played an interesting A-K hand at the 2013 LosAngeles Poker Classic at the Commerce Casino. Withblinds at 200-400, and with 20,000 in my stack, I had A♠K♠in the cutoff. I faced a mid-position raise to 1,100 from aplayer with a wide opening range and about25,000 in his stack. The player on my left wastilting (being emotional and not thinking clearly)from a recent hand and had about 5,500 left.Their read on me was that I was capable ofmoves or tricky plays, but that I wasn’t stupid.

Many folks in my spot would reraise here.Limit the field, take control of the hand in posi-tion, or perhaps win the hand right there, no blood spilled. I opted totake advantage of the scenario.

The tilter was aware of the raiser’s wide range. He was also awarethat I liked to see flops. My “loose preflop, call in position” range wasbased on my stack size.

(Side note: If the total amount of a preflop raise is less than 5 percentof my stack, I’ll often call with any two cards that at least connect —3-4, 6-7, etc. This will be evident over time in a tournament to anyplayer paying attention. In order to balance my opponents’ read on thelower end of my range, it’s important to occasionally mix in a flat callwith a good hand so that I don’t get read accurately for dead money andface consistent reraises.)

Back to the hand: I call the 1,100. As hoped (and largely as expect-ed), the tilter shipped his remaining 5,500 to the middle. Action folded to the originalraiser, who snap-called.

Time to act. I ship 20,000. All in. My weak initial call helped put an extra 10,000 intothe pot, and my opponent with chips would only be able to continue if he had a realhand. If he did, in fact, have a real hand, we’d be destined to get all of our chips in pre-flop: His four-bet would be read as a play on my three-bet, which was made vs. his wideopening range.

My initial call of the 1,100 prompted a sequence of events that ultimately led to thepreflop raiser putting 5,500 into the pot and still folding without seeing a flop. Heflashed his Q-J suited as he folded. My A-K held up against the tilter’s K-10 on a boardof 8, 7, 7, Q, 2. Note the queen (he said as he high-fived himself).

Win, win. Another advantage to this strategy is in how the story told by flat-calling and then

shipping is often read as a pair or a bluff. You’ll get folds from small pairs and calls fromA-Q or A-J — two courses of action you’d gladly welcome in the name of positiveexpected value.

If you see Anna anywhere, let her know she can still win if she simply plays her cardsright.

IT’S A FACT• In the mid-1970s, singer/songwriter David Bradstreet won a Juno award as Most Promising Male Vocalist. By the 1980s he’d fallen on hard times, having strained his voice and grown disenchanted with the industry. He half-jokingly tried to sell his Juno at a garage sale, but the $15,000 price tag he put on it discouraged any buyers. Not long afterwards he began recording film scores in his home studio, and began touring again in the 1990s. He won even more Junos in 1999, 2000, and 2002, which he presumably did not sell at garage sales.

HOPPERSMany types of bugs and animals hop. There are also hoppers of other sorts: hopper cars on trains, hoppers that are used on farms and people who hop (or maybe they jump) on trampolines! • Usually when we think of insect “hoppers,” grasshoppers and crickets come to mind. These insects from the order Orthoptera have powerful hind legs that allow them to propel themselves long distances. Also noteworthy about the order Orthoptera (sounds a little like opera, right?) is that these insects “sing” by performing “stridulation,” which is the action of rubbing parts of their bodies together. • National Geographic named the wierd froghopper bug the “World’s Greatest Leaper” in 2003. The froghopper is a “sap-sucker” that coats plants with foamy spittle – yuk! Froghoppers are about 1/5 of an inch (6 mm) long and can leap an amazing 28 inches (70 mm). That equals 140 times their body length. For a human to leap this distance, in comparison, would mean a long-jump record of 840 feet (256 m)!• According to neurobiologist, Malcolm Burrows, of the

University of Cambridge, in the United Kingdom, the secret to the long jumps of some insects is a “specialized catapult mechanism” that allows the insects to store and then release energy.• Kangaroos, the largest hopping animal, can cover a lot of ground with their hops. When kangaroos need to go faster, they don’t increase the frequency of their hops, instead they increase the distance for each hop. Kangaroos can bound 25 feet (7.6 m) or more forward and 6 feet (1.8 m) high in a single hop.• The back legs of kangaroos always move in tandem except when swimming!• The greater the range of a kangaroo’s hop, the more energy harnessed in their muscles and tendons when they touch down. Kangaroos have tremendous endurance with hearts twice the size of comparable animals and very efficient respiratory systems. • Wallabies are members of the kangaroo family, just in a smaller package. They, like their kangaroo cousins are only found naturally in Australia and Papua New Guinea.

subsequently bought the bear’s orphaned cub from the hunter for $20, naming her after his hometown of Winnipeg. The cub became the regiment’s mascot, accompanying them to World War I, where the cub was donated to the London Zoo. She became known as Winnie, and a young boy named Christopher Robin Milne re-named his toy teddy bear Winnie after seeing her at the zoo. Christopher’s father wrote the stories about Winnie the Pooh because of this bear cub.

Auto BitsThree simple steps

to make your car shine(NC) – There’s no time like spring to clean your car and get it ready for the sunny open road. In order to get the best car shine for the new season, Autoglym recommends the following three easy steps: Step 1 – Wash Wash your car regularly; doing so will help to preserve the finish of your car’s paintwork. Avoid household detergents as they can have a dulling effect on your paintwork. Instead, use a product designed for car washing, like the popular Autoglym product called Bodywork Shampoo

Conditioner. Step 2 – Polish Many of us tend to skip the polishing step and go straight to waxing –don’t make this common mistake. Polishing not only corrects paintwork and rectifies imperfections such as light scratches and swirl marks, but it also restores colour and shine. Step 3 – Protect Waxing is an important final touch to protect your car’s paintwork against harmful environmental factors such as bird droppings and sap. Unlike polish, waxing contains no cleaning or restoring agents and should only be used to seal in the result achieved from polishing: clean, dry, blemish free paintwork. More information is available online at www.autoglym.com. www.newscanada.com
