The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program

The broad aim of our program is to enable children to achieve a seed to plate experience that they can

replicate at home.

“We are engaged in grassroots, healthy lifestyles for our children,

their families and the broader community”.

“Pleasurable food education encourages critical thinking,

teamwork and understanding of cause and effect and

increased levels of observation”

We began operating regular kitchen and garden classes at Kallista Primary School in 2007, when we were selected to join the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program. The program has evolved and grown considerably over the years, and has transformed into a dynamic learning environment, offering so many different opportunities for incidental and practical, real-life learning.Children from all year levels thrive in regular sessions in both the kitchen and the garden.

In the garden, the students engage in growing their own food, and in addition to this practical skill, they are learning the science of soil and composting, the life cycles of living organisms, seasonality, environmental and ecological factors, both local and global. They take pride in their garden environment.

Preparing In the kitchen, the children plan their own menus, based on what is available to harvest from the garden. They research the recipes using different mediums. These sessions are meaningful learning experiences, reinforcing literacy and numeracy and collaborative group connection.
