MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

As summer rapidly approaches, the Board wishes all of KAJ’s members an enjoyable, safe and restful summer season.

SHABBOS CHIZUK

The Kehilla enjoyed its annual “Shabbos Chizuk” on Shabbos Parashas Korach. A sit-down Kiddush was held in Moller Hall after Shul, at which the special guest, Rav Shmuel Yeshaya Keller, Rosh Yeshiva of Telz Chicago, spoke. After Mincha Moller Hall was once again in use, as Kehilla members and friends enjoyed the end-of season Seuda Shelishis. The Senior Social Clubs sponsored both events.

Rabbi Shimon Mayer Margaliot emceed, praising our Kehilla, and noting the need for Chizuk as summer approaches.

In his address, Rav Mantel discussed the machalokes of Korach vaAdoso, and stressed the strength that Midos can wield, both in destroying, and, perhaps more dangerously, in building up false edifices of seemingly committed, unified persons—who are actually all working for their own respective self-interests. Sheleimus is achieved when Klal Yisroel works as a Klal, with proper Midos and care for one another. The summer can bring (temporary) separations, both of family members and of members from the Kehilla. It is our duty to ensure our standards do not lapse, no matter where we may find ourselves. We should also make a more conscious effort, just because we may be physically apart, to stay in contact. If Bikur Cholim cannot be done personally, then one can call or write a card, and participate, be it in a Simcha or other event.

Rav Keller then spoke, and, among other things, continued the topic he had spoken on at the Kiddush that morning, on the words of Shlomo HaMelech, Eikev Anavoh Yiras HaShem If Anava—humility—does not bring one to an increased Yiras Shomayim, then the point has been missed, as admirable as that individual’s Midos accomplishment may be.

SPRING SEASON SEUDOS SHELISHIS

The end-of season Shabbos Chizuk also capped off a successful Spring season of Kehilla Seudos Shelishis held in Moller Hall. Those who attended heard Divrei Torah from Rav Mantel each week, as well as an additional speaker, most of whom were Kollel members or alumni. As Rabbi Raphael Weis mentioned at the Kollel Breakfast (see below), the Board of Trustees, and the Kehilla, salutes them for their efforts. Listed alphabetically, they were: Rabbi Pinchas Ashen, Rabbi Rafael Bachrach, Rabbi Uri Cohen, Rabbi Moshe Eisdorfer, Rabbi Menachem Kunofsky, Rabbi Michoel Meir Levi, and Rabbi Avi Rogin. The first week of the Seudos Shelishis was also the Daf Yomi siyum of Seder Nezikin; Rabbi Dr. Johny Hellman and Rabbi Elchonon Stern spoke.

KOLLEL BREAKFAST

The 41st annual Kollel Breakfast was held on Monday, May 28/14 Sivan in Moller Hall. The dais was graced by the presence of Rav Mantel, Rav Posen, Rav Meir Levi, Rav Yehoshua Rubanowitz, Rabbi Shlomo Goldberg, Rabbi Shraga Soloveitchik, and Rabbi Raphael M. Weis, the breakfast’s chairman. Rabbi Weis reminded those present that this Seudas Mitzva was being tendered in memory of Mr. Chaim Yehonoson Rothschild, ז''ל, an advocate for and supporter of the Kollel for decades.

Rabbi Weis applied the Mishna in Avos of Eizehu Chochom, etc., to the Chevrei HaKollel, then praised and introduced Rav Mantel. The Rav quoted the Sforno’s explanation of the symbolism of the Menorah, with the right-hand Neiros (Lomdei HaTorah) and left-hand Neiros (Tomchei HaTorah) all facing towards the central Ner, the Pnei HaMenorah, with both groups directed by and acting on the Retzon HaShem. Rav Mantel applied this to our Kollel, as the Chavrei HaKollel and its supporters work in a harmonious partnership, under the guidance of the Rosh Kollel, Rav Levi, to do the Retzon HaShem, and maximize the Kollel’s Limud haTorah. The Rav also made mention of Mr. Rothschild zl, who was niftar this past winter, and whose Askanus and support not only embraced the Kehilla and its mosdos, such as the Kollel, but extended to Hatzolo work, much of it unknown, with the children from Morocco, among many other vital issues.

In his address, Rav Levi discussed the idea of HaRoeh es HaNolad, as mentioned in Pirkei Avos, and noted that while this is a very important and praiseworthy Mida, when it comes to those who are Oskim BeTzorchei Tzibur, it cannot be used overly much, as almost no project could get off the ground, due to “realistic” concerns about the finances, etc. We must rely on the continued generosity of the Kollel’s friends, as we seek to maintain, and augment, this vital institution.

Rabbi Weis introduced Rabbi Rafael Bachrach, who has been a member of our Kollel for the last two years, after learning in Mir Yerushalayim. Rabbi Bachrach, married to the former Tzipora Taffel of Baltimore, has roots in Washington Heights, as his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Karl and Meta Bachrach, were long-time members of Shaarei HaTikva, and his father grew up in the Heights. Rabbi Bachrach delivered the morning’s Dvar Halocho, on the topic of Tereema, foods that are crushed up but perhaps not entirely unrecognizable, and the contingent Halachos regarding what Brocho is to be made on them.

PRODUCE FROM ERETZ YISROEL

Produce from Eretz Yisroel is currently being sold on the American market (eg. peppers, carrots). Since produce from Eretz Yisroel requires the separation of Terumos uMaasros, the consumer is advised to look for the country of origin as marked on the label or bag.

GRADUATIONS

Our Yeshiva celebrated the graduations of the Pre-Mesivta eighth grade boys, the Mesivta’s twelfth grade seniors, and the Bais Yaakov Middle School’s eighth graders at the Mount Sinai Jewish Center’s ballroom, on the evenings of Tuesday June 12/ 29 Sivan, Thursday, June 14/ Rosh Chodesh Tamuz and Monday, June 18/ 5Tamuz, respectively.

The eighth-grade boys were first up, on Tuesday. Those present heard from Rav Mantel; Rabbi Shraga Soloveitchik, Menahel; Rabbi Ephraim Fischer, general studies principal; and Rabbi Heshy Sobel, the boys’ Rebbi, who, after eight very successful years at our Mesivta, is departing. graduate Zevi Kalinsky—was the Parent Representative to speak; Meir Hoffman represented his classmates. Many thanks to Mrs. Sari Levi who planned and set up the elegant refreshments.

Those present at the Mesivta’s graduation, on Thursday evening, heard from Rav Mantel, Rabbi Soloveitchik, and Rabbi Fischman, as well as the boys’ rebbi, Rabbi Uziel Jacobovits, who, after many acclaimed years at our Mesivta is also leaving. Rabbi Yosef Aryeh addressed the graduates as Parent Representative. The Class Representative to speak was Ariel Tzur, who, on behalf of all the graduating seniors, expressed his thanks to all the Rebbeim (beginning with Rabbi Avrohom Hoffman, their first-grade rebbi), teachers and staff, singling out the Mesivta’s dedicated secretary, Mrs. Sarah Bass. Thanks go to her, and Mesdames Hershkowitz, Hirschberg, Settonbrino and Tzur, as well as Yehuda and Shimon Katzenstein, for helping set up the post-graduation collation.

Our seventeen Bais Yaakov Middle School seniors closed out the graduations on the following Monday evening. Those present heard words of greeting from Rav Mantel. The Parent Representative to speak was Rabbi Aharon Ciment, father of graduate Miss Elisheva Ciment. Mrs. Hena Gottesman, Menaheles of the middle school, addressed the graduates and their guests, after which the valedictorians, Miss Raizy Cahn, Miss Adelle Rosenblum and Miss Adina Hoffman spoke. Miss Rivka Hakimi was the recipient of the Character Award, and Mrs. Odelia Schlisser, General Studies’ principal, spoke, before joining with Mrs. Gottesman in the distribution of the eagerly-awaited diplomas.

Our heartiest Mazal Tov wishes to our graduates, as we wish them continued Hatzlocho in their studies, and all their endeavors. We extend the same wishes to the young ladies who graduated twelfth grade this year, Misses Nechama Fermaglich, Nomie Fermaglich, Chana Rivka Herbsman, Miriam Lasdun and Rachelle Levy.

SHAATNEZ Shaatnez (wool and linen) is often found in garments bought even from a reliable Jewish clothing store. Therefore, it is forbidden to wear any man’s, woman’s or child’s garment that contains wool or linen until it has been determined not to contain shaatnez. To determine whether your garment is shaatnez-free, garments may be dropped off at the Kehilla office, 714 W. 186th Street at the following times:

Weekdays 10:00 – 4:30 Fridays 10:00 – 12:00

If you are not available at these times, please make an appointment by emailing [email protected]. If you do not have email, call 212-795-5693 and leave a message.

Rabbi Kalman Strauss will test the garments on our premises.

Please note that it is important to leave on tags with information where garment is manufactured and list of materials contained in it.
