MABUHAY MGA KABABAYAN!!!!!!!!!!!
For me and our newly elected officers, it is a year to re-acquaint and to understandmore about the objectives of our organization, and to prepare a working structure for
moving forward, meaning “A BIG CHANGE”. This will enable us to meet the growing needs of our com-munity especially now that we have a lot of our kababayans arriving in Christchurch. We can have a
more visible impact towards our development as an ethnic group.
Our community continues to grow and develop as a strong ethnic group in Christchurch. I would liketo encourage everyone to continue building a solid foundation of oneness amongst Filipinos through-out Canterbury. I have no doubt that we Filipinos can fulfill our desires and dreams to meet our goals
as individuals as well as a community.
At the moment our only regular communication tool is the KABAYAN newsletter which is publishedevery three months. The committee has agreed to create a website which hopefully will be up and
running soon, where all activities and events will be posted.
We have new faces in the committee and of course a lot of new ideas from them. Communications
among the committee is a big deal to us as it gives us understanding with one another.
The society has endorsed Lauren Ottaway to represent PSCI at the Bb Pilipinas-NZ Pageant in Welling-ton this Labour Weekend Annual Reunion. We are proud to let everyone know that her talent is PAN-
DANGGO SA ILAW which is a very popular skilled dance. We wish her all the best.
Cheers,
Elvisa Claridad Cragg

Lovely Lauren is our bet!
Lauren Ottaway
Throughout the years, beauty pageants continue to be a scene of immedi-ate success in every generation, and remain to be the highlight of the An-nual Filipino Reunion held every labour weekend. Once again, we will wit-ness beautiful Filipina/Half-Filipina women from all over New Zealand, competing in Wellington, in a race to win the Crown, and make their cityproud.
From swimsuits, evening wear, talent contests and, question and answerportions, Miss Lauren Ottaway is our best bet! Born to a Filipina mother, and a English father, lovely Lauren not only possesses a God-given physicalbeauty, but a mixed culture of knowledge and remarkable brain power.Christchurch kababayans, let us all unite to support and cheer for Laurento be the next Miss Philippines-New Zealand!
Last month would have been the saddest moment for Rich-ard and Evangeline Stanners and their two lovely children,Josh and Izzy.
Evangeline, 35, was denied residency because of an ad-vanced kidney disease, for which she will need either a di-alysis or a kidney transplant by the end of the year. Dialysiswould cost about $65,000 while a transplant is about$70,000.
A New Zealander can sponsor a spouse for residency but sub-ject to the spouse meeting an acceptable standard of health.According to NZ Immigration rules, Evangeline does not meetthe acceptable standard on the basis that “she is likely to
impose significant costs or demands on New Zealand’s health services.”
Evangeline laments, “Immigration is tearing our family apart. If I go back to the Philippines, I amsurely going to die—I’d rather die with my family beside me.” If this happens, it would be “as goodas signing her a death warrant,” Richard adds.
Richard appealed to the Residency Review Board and also brought her case to Wigram MP JimAnderton, who, in turn, wrote to Associate Immigration Minister Kate Wilkinson requesting amedical waiver. However, MP Wilkinson could not guarantee a favourable outcome.
Meanwhile, news about her spread quickly around Christchurch through the help of the media. She was featured in the Star, The Press and New Zealand Herald, as well as other on-line newsarticles. Eventually, through the help of TV3 News reporter Hamish Clark, Evangeline’s case wasfeatured in TV3’s Campbell Live last 25th August. Support for Evangeline’s sad plight grewstrongly, particularly among the local Filipino community. Many offered prayers and mass peti-tions, some gave financial support, while others started circulating a paper and on-line petition, reaching far and wide within and outside Christchurch.
Richard described the community support as “humbling.” Indeed, it was truly Bayanihan in ac-tion!
Just two days after Evangeline Stanners went on air nationwide, the family received the mostwonderful news ever in their lives! In the morning of 27 August, the Office of the Associate Minis-ter of Immigrations has granted Evangeline the medical waiver required to process her Residencyapplication.
Richard and Evangeline, the whole Filipino community of Christchurch and New Zealand join youin this moment of rejoicing! May the good Lord above continue to bless your family!
Dr. Len Redoblado
P.S.: Many thanks to all those who have helped and supported the Stanners!

Scroll back the hands of time into the 1970’s, and I’m sure you’ll enjoytripping down memory lane…...your hearts will surely swoon to the songPers Lab, as you clearly picture in your mind your first crush, how you meltdown at the smile of your “love”. You will fall in love again to the tunes of“Ikaw ang Miss Universe ng Buhay Ko” , “TL ako sa’yo”, “Ang Boyprenkong Baduy”…..also called “the marshmallow sound”, those melodic lovesongs with catchy phrases popularized by Cinderella, Sharon Cuneta, theApo Hiking Society will trigger a large dose of homesickness in yourhearts.
The Manila Sounds also went high with swing and disco fever, with big hits by Hotdog and VST & Co,like “Bongga Ka ‘Day”, “Awitin Mo, Isasayaw Ko”,“Rock Baby Rock”, “Manila”, and “Annie Batung-bakal.” Anong sinabi ng Bee Gees sa VST & Co, odi kaya ng Village People sa ating Hagibis?
