The president of the Univer-sity of Notre Dame in South Bend an-nounced that in consulta-tion with other school officials he has decided to cover 19th-century murals in a prominent campus building that depict the life and exploration of Chris-topher Columbus. Greetings Brother Knights,St. Patrick’s dinner at St.Patrick's church is March 16. After our last meeting it was suggested to make this a fund raiser for the church. Please support this efffort. The next day will be St. Jerome’s dinner from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m..My 2nd. term will end July 1st. I know there are Knights in our council who can fill this position better than I have, so please consider taking on this role. Our

council needs good Knights for a few positions. At our next meeting we will need a nominating committee. Anyone inter-ested in being on it should let me know.Until next time keep our distressed members and our priests in your prayers.Your Grand Knight Danny McConnell

Each day we make choices: Should I eat an extra donut? How much should my tithe be? Should I trust my doctor who says I need sinus surgery? Is it time to trade cars? Should I buy or lease? Should I get an abortion?

We know what the answer to the last question is. All we need to do now is try to convince others who think other-wise that life over death is always the better choice.

Lent is a season of forty days, not counting Sundays, which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Sat-urday. Lent comes from the Anglo Saxon word lencten, which means "spring." The forty days represents the time Jesus spent in the wilderness, enduring the temptation of Satan and preparing to begin his ministry.

Lent is a time of repentance, fasting and preparation for the coming of Easter. It is a time of self-examination and reflection. In the early church, Lent was a time to prepare new converts for baptism. Today, Christians focus on their relationship with God, often choosing to give up something or to volunteer and give of themselves for others.

Sundays in Lent are not counted in the forty days because each Sunday represents a "mini-Easter" and the rever-ent spirit of Lent is tempered with joyful anticipation of the Resurrection.

ASH WEDNESDAY IS MARCH 6 THIS YEAR

1. Make a commitment to read the Sunday scriptures before you go to Mass. In the same way that reading up on football players, opposing teams, and coaching strategies will help you experience a game more fully, familiariz-ing yourself with the readings ahead of time will help you experience them in a deeper way on Sunday.

2. Try a new spiritual practice. Sign up for an hour of Eucharistic Adoration. Attend Mass at a parish that’s made up of people from a different racial/ethnic group. Sign up for a silent retreat or spend at least one hour in silent meditation each weekend.

3. Think about what you usually spend your money on. Do you buy too many clothes? Spend too much on dinner out? Pick one type of expenditure that you’ll “fast” from during Lent, and then give the money you would usually spend to a local charity.

4. When you first sit down in front of your computer at work, or at the very end of your workday, try a 10-minute guided prayer from Sacred Space based on the spiritual exercises of St. Ignatius.

5. Go to a weekday Mass one day during the week. Many parishes offer them early in the morning, at noon, or after work. Daily Masses are often more intimate and shorter than Sunday Mass.

6. If you don’t have a cross in your apartment or house, buy a simple one and put it in your bedroom.

7. Read the entire Gospel of Mark in one sitting. As the shortest Gospel, it is the most concise story of Jesus’ life, and the cross, a central Lenten symbol, plays an even more prominent role than in the other Gospels.

8. Attend the Stations of the Cross somewhere. Many parishes offer these during Lent and often on Fridays. Or check out Busted Halo’s Virtual Stations of the Cross.

9. Get some friends together and attend a Friday fish fry at a local parish. It’s not the healthiest thing in the world, but a fun Catholic tradition to help you abstain from eating meat on Fridays during Lent.

10. Unplug from your iPhone or turn off your car radio on your commute. The silence may be jarring at first, but you may find that you are able to concentrate better and will be more observant of your surroundings.

11. Buy a book of daily reflections and keep it by your bed. Local parishes often offer these for purchase during Lent, and there are some good ones available online. Try the Magnificat or a book by Edward Hays.

12. Think about a habit that has kept you from being who God is calling you to be. Consciously give up that habit.

13. Spend at least one weekend or evening volunteering during Lent. Serve a meal at your local soup kitchen. Visit the elderly. Stock shelves at a food pantry.

14. Make a commitment to fast from insensitive, cruel comments about others.

15. Pray for somebody. As you’re walking the streets, driving the highways, or sitting in your cubicle at work, pick out a person who appears to be in need and pray for that person. Be mindful of the words of philosopher Philo of Alexandria, who said, “Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a great battle.”

15 IDEAS TO HELP YOU ENRICH LENT....besides giving up chocolate

Financial Secretary Jim Blackwell intro-duced members to an idea he has had to help the homelss with a gift bag. Items such as socks, gloves, a coupon for Mc-Donald’s and a bus ride, toothpaste, etc. are put in a bag to be given to any home-less a Knight should see. He hopes that members will be willing to take a bag, give

it to a homelless person, and join a prayer circle.

From the council meeting of February 14, 2019

Faithful Navigator Henry Cajiao announced that there will be meatless spaghetti dinners on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of Lent. Proceeds will go to the church.

GK Danny McConnell announced that it will be soon be time to nomi-nate officers for the new fiscal year.

One-year trustee Bob Dasch reported that this year’s audit was completed in time for the February 15 deadline. All accounts turned out fine. Our council is OK for another year.

Advocate Tom Walsh proposed an Easter egg hunt for St. Pat’s Parish to be held on the church grounds. He plans to buy plastic eggs which are filled with good-ies.The council voted to allow this and gave Tom and limit of $350 to spend.

PGK Henri Bellavance noted that as soon as Supreme desinates that it’s time to switch to the new Knights’ regalia he will resign as our council’s commander. There was some discussion about when that time would be, but no one was sure, so DD José Carrera said he would look into it and let us know at the next council meeting. He also said that there would be a training session for the Color Guard at St. Catherine of Siena Parish Saturday, February 15. He did not know if more ses-sions would be held.

PGK Henri Bellavance announced that there will be a sock hop Saturday, April 13. The parish hall has been reserved and he hopes to find a band.Tickets are now available at $10.00 each.

The greatest gift the Knights of Columbus may have brought to a national gathering of 17,000 young Catholics in January was an opportunity to experi-ence a deeper silence.Held in Indianapolis, this gathering included something special, the incorrupt heart of St. Jean Marie Vianney. The major relic had a profound effect on the participating students, especially during adoration. It also touched the 350 seminarians and more than 400 priests on hand as Vianney, the patron saint of parish priests, is revered by Catholic clergy as the model of priestly holiness. The silence was first felt on Friday evening when the relic arrived as part of a national pilgrimage that will stretch into the spring. The relic was to be carried in procession and placed in front of the main altar during Mass. But before the priests lined up for the procession, the relic was placed in the sacristy for the concelebrating priests to have time to pray with St. Jean Vianney.

St. John Vianney’s incorrupt heart was placed where the priests could see it. “Hearing confessions while knowing St. Jean was there praying for me, and for all those seeking God’s forgiveness, was incredibly powerful and something that will stay with me long into my priesthood,” one chaplain said. Over 6,500 confessions were heard over a two-hour period,

1471 An indulgence is a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian who is duly disposed gains under certain prescribed conditions through the action of the Church which, as the minister of redemption, dispenses and applies with authority the treasury of the satisfactions of Christ and the saints. An indulgence is partial or plenary according as it removes either part or all of the temporal punishment due to sin. The faithful can gain indulgences for themselves or apply them to the dead.

1498 Through indulgences the faithful can obtain the remission of temporal pun-ishment resulting from sin for themselves and also for the souls in Purgatory.

1478 An indulgence is obtained through the Church who, by virtue of the power of binding and loosing granted her by Christ Jesus, intervenes in favor of individual Christians and opens for them the treasury of the merits of Christ and the saints to obtain from the Father of mercies the remission of the temporal punishments due for their sins.
