Prepare For Next Sunday’s Readings In next Sunday’s Gospel, (June 7) we return to the liturgical season of Ordinary Time. This Sunday and next, however, are designated as solemnities—special days that call our attention to central mysteries of our faith. Today on Trinity Sunday we celebrate the mys-tery of the Holy Trinity, one God in three persons. In the context of today’s focus on the mystery of the Holy Trinity, the reading calls our attention to the action of God, who reveals himself in three persons: God the Fa-ther, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit. God the Fa-ther, out of love for the world, sent his Son into the world in order to save it. Through the death and resur-rection of the Son, we have been given the gift of the Holy Spirit. As three persons, God acts always as a God of love; he does not condemn the world but acts to save it.
The Gospel also calls attention to the response that is required of us. God’s love for us calls us to respond in faith by professing our belief in God’s son, Jesus, and the salvation that he has won for us. This profession of faith is a sign of the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives.

A Pilgrim’s Progress… At “press time” this week we received the joyful news that Pope Francis has accepted a miracle through the intercession of Fr. Michael J. McGivney approving him to be beatified at a mass to be held at a future date in Connecticut. The miracle involves the healing of an unborn U.S. child in utero of a life threatening condition in 2015. Beatification is the next to last step in the canonization process before being officially recognized as a saint by the Church. Fr McGivney was born in 1852 in Waterbury, CT and ordained a priest in Baltimore in 1877. In 1882, in the midst of an anti-Catholic culture, while serving a largely Irish-American immigrant community, Fr McGivney established the Knights of Columbus to provide spiritual support to Catholic men and assistance to families who had lost their “breadwinner.” Today, as the largest Catholic fraternal service organization on earth, the Knights consist of 2 million members from twelve nations. Father McGivney remains a challenging witness to parish priests and all Catholic men and their families to live the virtues of charity, fraternity and patriotism. Faith-filled members of the Knights truly become the “strong right arm of the Church” when they rise to the challenge and live the Faith in their families, the parish, and the public square. I am grateful every day to my brother Knights from St. Columcille and Immaculate Conception parishes who so generously do so. Fr. McGivney will join the six Mexican Knights of Columbus members, canonized as martyrs to the Faith who gave their lives during the Cristero War in Mexico from 1926-1929. On this Pentecost Sunday let us ask Fr. McGivney and all God’s saints to continue to pray for us that we will be as open as they have been to living the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Deo Vindice, fr john

Congratulations to Destanie Garza of Immaculate Conception.
On May 26th Destanie was baptized, Confirmed, and shared in the Holy Eucharist for the first time. Hallie Niemerg was her sacramental sponsor and supported Destanie throughout the RCIA process. We wish these two graduating high school seniors well as they move into their college years.

UPDATE: I am grateful to pass on that Bishop Paprocki has given pastors throughout our diocese the responsibility to Confirm and give first Holy Eucharist to our students who had been previously scheduled to receive these Sac-raments in calendar year 2020. This celebration had originally been scheduled to take place for St. Columcille and Immaculate Conception youth at Immaculate Conception Church this October 11th at the 10:30 mass. We will definitely plan on mov-ing forward with the local celebration of these Sacraments this fall. I will wait to schedule exact dates and times when it becomes clearer what attendance restriction numbers, etc. we may be dealing with then. Families who prefer to possibly delay Confirmation to another time and location in order to receive the Sacra-ment from Bishop Paprocki have the option to do so. Information about that opportunity will be forthcoming. Thank you for your patience and continuing prayers for all of those being prepared for the Sacraments. -fr john

Prayer to the Holy Spirit Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful. And kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And you will renew the face of the earth. Lord, By the light of the Holy Spirit You have taught the hearts of your faithful. In the same Spirit Help us to relish what is right. And always rejoice in your consolation. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Raffle to benefit OUR LOCAL Catholic Charities!
Dear Immaculate Conception Community, My name is David Lauzon and I am very grateful to be part of the Immaculate Conception family this summer. I will be arriving in Mattoon straight from St. Meinrad Seminary in Southern Indiana where I have just completed by first year of pre theology. I grew up in the North East about an hour south of Montreal, Canada and found my way all the way to Eastern Illinois University. I am a now a proud alumnus having earned degrees in both accounting in philosophy. While there, I was greatly involved in the Newman Centre community which brought me to consider a vocation to the priesthood with the Diocese of Springfield. I look forward to getting to meet you all. Please know of my prayers for you.
