JWI Health and Wellness Event
5/20/17
On Saturday May 20, 2017 JWI
hosted its, Health and Wellness
Event located at River Oaks. It was
an awesome turn out of over 330
employees and their family
members. Many other employees
rallied together and volunteered
their time to help make this event a
success. Everyone had a great time
and lots of fun with activities such as
the roller skating rink, kid’s bouncy
house, face painting, massages and
lots of good food and exercise.
Healthy eating was one of the main
focuses of the event. There was lots
of food with Inez Evans cooking
cauliflower pizza for all. Though
skeptical at first everyone was
pleasantly surprised how really good
it was. We also had barbequed
chicken, chili beans and salad that
was prepared, cooked and served by
Mike Demar, his wife Lisa and son
Cory, Daniel Marquez, along with
retiree Joanne Morisolli.
In the spirit of JWI always
encouraging an active life style, we
had several exercise stations set up.
There
were three buses that had stretch
exercises in them being shown by
mentors Jasbir Bains, Jake Alino (and
his son), Ron Langston, Hossein
Ramirez, Harpreet Singh, and
Alberto Candelaria. Taking care of
the hula hoop station was Felicia
Turner.
JWI Newsletter June 2017
The walk station was Julia Panescu,
Rosemary Noble, Caroline Sikes.
Breathing techniques were
demonstrated by Daniel Johnson of
Balance Point. Free massages were
given by Lisa Guzman and also by
Pro Fitness who also provided yoga
instruction.
Brenden Hayes put on a very heart
rate boosting Boot Camp, which
really got everyone moving and
jumping.
The roller rink being run by David
Allen and Aloha Roller Rink was a
big hit for all that participated. Some
really looked like pro’s, some for the
first time and some that hadn’t been
on skates for 30 years.
Once people completed 3 of the
stations they received a raffle ticket
and if they did 6 stations they
received an extra opportunity to win
cool prizes like Fit bits, bikes and
even a 24 hour gym membership.
The event had special activities for
the kids and the kids at heart like
face painting and a Jump house.
The kids face painting was done by
Nancy Plew and Patricia Murray.
There were many kids as well as
adults getting some wonderful face
painting art from Nancy and
Patricia. The bounce house as well as
cotton candy and snow cones were
brought in by Cabrina Romero. Since
it was a beautiful sunny day the
snow cones were a big hit.
To challenge the creative and
resourceful side of employees there
was a Vertical Garden Challenge
with Inez Evans as the Judge. She
supplied the winning prize (a
beautiful cedar wood vertical garden
for all to use at the Chaboya garden).
We had four entries, one from each
of these VTA locations: Chaboya,
Gaudalupe, North and River Oaks.
Participants had to build their
gardens based on cost, size (2x2x4),
must be home made, hold at least 10
plants and bonus points for using
recycled materials.
There were some great designs with
Chaboya taking top honors and
some other yards looking to submit
formal protest of the results.
There were many vendors that
contributed to the success of the
event such as Silicon Valley Bike
Coalition, Meal Prep by Angela
Rivera of North Yard, Silicon Valley
Bike Coalition, Kaiser, United Health
care, Massage & Reflexology by Lisa
Guzman, Stroke Awareness, Santa
Clara County Federal Credit Union,
Technology Federal Credit Union,
Fitness Evolution, Red Ladies Dance
Group, Pro Fitness.
The perfect way to end the event was
with Glorietta from Light Rail
hosting a dance off for everyone to
join in.
We would like to give a Big THANK
YOU to all those that helped make
this event happen.
We had Cassandra Leventon and
Shannon Arms at the check in table
and handling the raffle tickets,
Cassandra also brought her daughter
Svea to help out. Rhonda Knox and
Shirley Rayford took care of the JWI
table and handed out give aways to
all employee’s that attended.
Carmelo Gallo was
the Event MC. He did a GREAT job
with the mic to keep everyone in
tune to the event happenings, he also
brought his daughter, Cassie, as a
volunteer. On pictures we had
Sarabdip Daula. Casey Peek from
Balance Point/Peek Media did the
video. Special thanks to all the
mentors and volunteers. Due to all
our collective efforts we had a Great
Event.
Also a special Thank You to all the
facilities workers that had prepared
the area for the event throughout the
week and on the day of the event.
We could not have made it without
you.

Vertical Garden Division Challenge By Sally Ng This year during the JWI Wellness Event on May 20, 2017, the Joint Workforce Investment (JWI) Committee invited us to a division (yard) competition. The challenge was to have each division create a sustainable garden that can be grown in your balcony or patio. Vertical gardens are an alternative for gardeners who don't have a lot of horizontal space, want to cover an unattractive wall, or just want something different. There are many different varieties of vertical gardens to choose from. One easy option is a container-style garden, which means potted plants are attached to a wall or displayed in rows, or planters are stacked. Another is a “pocket” garden, featuring plants tucked into pockets made from felt or canvas. Vertical gardens can also be grown in a large plastic or wooden wall planter with slots or panels, or in recycled wooden shipping pallets—for these systems, the soil is less contained, so wire mesh is occasionally used to prevent the contents from spilling. The division/ team winner won a vertical garden for their worksite to share with their co-workers.
The winners to the Vertical Garden Challenge are : 1st place -Chaboya, 2nd place - Guadalupe, 3rd place- North Yard and 4th place - River Oaks (Diversity and Inclusion Dept.). The 1st place Vertical Garden Division Challenge winners were Chaboya team. The Chaboya division team named their vertical garden,
“CHOPS IS TOPS”. The Chaboya Division team includes transportation, maintenance, technical training, dispatchers and facilities employees. The Chaboya team collected old uniforms from maintenance and operations. A painter’s jumpsuit overall and an operator’s shirt was used. The project was unique using a ¾” pvc pipe to build a frame. The overall jumpsuit and shirt were slide and sew into the frame. The pockets were filled with dirt, plant and decorative moss. The finished product was decorated with custom labels and other VTA - themed items. This was an awesome project. The most important part of the Vertical Garden Challenge was working together as a team to accomplish a task. This is what Joint Workforce Investment (JWI) symbolizes, Union and VTA working together hand in hand to be successful together, united as one! Thank you for all your efforts in taking on this challenge. The rules to the Vertical Garden Division Challenge are: 1. Each team member must be from the same division. 2. Size limit is 2’ x 2’ and not taller than 4’. 3. Must to homemade. 4. Must be able to hold a minimum of 10 plants. 5. Maximum cost is $30 for materials to build the garden, excluding the cost of the plants (bonus points for recycled materials). Include plans and instructions on how to build it. 6. Include a list of where all the material came from. 7. Bring a picture, a video or the vertical garden to the event on May 20, 2017 at the JWI Health and Wellness Event located at River Oaks.
