The �rst half of the year was not a healthy one – it entailed
copious amounts of antacids to curb heartburn, a liberal
smattering of anti-in�ammatory capsules for aching joints,
an increase in dosage of corticosteroids for my asthma and

signs I just put this “ poor health” down to my age and shrugged

Cold sore disappears
During the holidays, we went �shing and spent a lot of

Garcinia cambogia, also known as tamarind, is a tropical fruit grown in Indonesia.
Its rind contains a compound called hydroxycitric acid (HCA), which, according to
research, can play a role in weightloss.
In a recent American study, researchers put HCA to the
test. They followed 30 overweight people over a two-
month period. All of the part icipants consumed the
same amount of kilojoules per day and followed the
same exercise programme. One group was given HCA,
while the other group was given a placebo.
At the end of the study the HCA group lost an average
of 5.4 kg, while the placebo group only lost an average
of 1.3 kg. The HCA group’s BMI also fell by
6.3%, and only a 1.7% difference could be
seen in the placebo group’s BMI.
The researchers found a difference
in the appet ites of the different
groups too. The placebo
group’s appet ite remained the
same throughout the study,
while the HCA group’s appet ite
dropped with 16%.
Another interest ing �nding was
that the serotonin levels, a feel-good
hormone in the body, was almost
double in the HCA group. Not only did
they lose more weight, but they were
also feeling happier!
According to research, HCA blocks the
enzyme called cit rate lyase, which helps turn
carbohydrates into fat . Block this enzyme, and
your body turns carbohydrates into energy
instead of fat.
Other studies also showed that HCA might help
suppress your appet ite by increasing the level
of satisfact ion that you get from food. Feeling
sat is�ed after meals stops you from grazing in
between. Further studies are still necessary to
verify why this is happening. We can’t wait to
see what will be discovered!

Garcinia cambogia may make it easier
for your body to use glucose. One study
showed that subjects that got garcinia
cambogia had lower insulin levels
than others that didn’t. Talk to
