A SuCCeSSFul SeminAr And An AmAzing workShop by ruSk mAlTA! This has been possible thanks to Mr Samy Karoutchi, Professional Stylist for BabylissPro and RUSK Europe designer and to the participating hairdressers.

A talk about Rusk’s Philosophy was Mr Karoutchi’s introduction to Monday’s seminar, followed by an explanation about the benefits of using DeepShine Colour/Direct. In the afternoon, the hairdressers were given a hands on session which included colouring, lightening and styling using Rusk products.

On Tuesday, the hairdressers had the opportunity to learn various upstyle techniques using BabylissPro Hairdressing Tools, such as the Miracurl (using its specific styling products), Straightening Irons and the new Revolutionary Italia Brava Hairdryer. During this workshop, the hairdressers experienced the benefits of working with Rusk products.

More than a hundred hairdressers took part in an interactive hair event that featured Francesco Maria Ferri, the Italian hairdresser, who hails from Parma. He started his teaching career with one of the most famous hairdressing training institutions, Pivot Point. His career further expanded during his fourteen years with a top multinational brand.

Since the techniques were rather complex, the models were prepared by a team of local colour experts and a final section was presented on stage to demonstrate the technique.

Francesco used A New Colour, a product based on natural pigments, such as carotid and melanin which are found in nature. These naturally occurring pigments are what give living creatures colour.

The inspiration for the colours came from the insect world of butterflies, scarabs and beetleswith their multi-faceted, reflective and vibrant colours.

A New Colour is the brain child of Angelo Seminara, who is the only person to hold the title of British Hairdresser of the Year for three

years in a row. Not only is A New Colour ammonia free, but the colour pigment in it is mixed with an ingredient based on quartz that is sometimes called liquid glass. This shines and reflects light even more than diamonds, so it confers a splendid, long lasting shine to the hair. Attendees were impressed by A New Colour's coverage of white hair, as well as the lack of smell and the vibrancy of shades achieved.

Francesco also demonstrated the Flamboyage technique, an original tool developed by Angelo Seminara. This creates natural looking light and dark touches of colour in the hair, giving the hairdresser control over the subtlety or strength of the effect.

In the afternoon, Francesco finished off his colour techniques with superb hair cuts which were inspired by Angelo Seminara's latest collection, Woodland.

The day-long programme included information and games about environmentally friendly measures which hairdressers should follow while working in their salon. A new product trend is to have vegetables and fruit as the basis of haircare, with no parabens and sulphates.

Francesco also hosted the second edition of Davines Colour Ambassador for a group of fourteen hairdressers and found time to visit students at the MCAST Community Services Institute. All who met Francesco Maria Ferri were impressed by his professionalism and skill with both the scissors and the colouring brush.

The Xara Lodge was once again the venue chosen for Moda Malta, which is an incredible place to hold such a unique event. Moda Malta, which was held on Saturday, 1st November was organised by Modelle International.

This is the third year that this event has been organised and it offers fashion outlets an opportunity to exhibit their latest collections, in preparation for the coming season.

The participants included Label C by Caroline Hili, Nadine, BVR The Boutique, Dor and Nilara. Ivory & Co presented a unique wedding collection, while 202 Jewellery exhibited their products.

The local fashion designers, C&R presented their latest collection on the night.

The fashion show included about fifty models and gave the guests a clear indication of the latest trends and styles for the coming months.

This event was sponsored by Charles Grech Ltd.

The make-up artists used Make-up Factory by Diane Nikolic on all the models, while Charles & Jeanette and their team from Jigami Hairdressing Academy were responsible for the hairstyles of all the models.

Moda Malta was hosted by Presenter Valerie Vella and the entertainment was provided by Kurt Calleja.

Over the past four years, the Maltese nail technician Romina Mccairn has won a number of international awards. As a true professional in her

field, she has been a great ambassador for her

country.

Between 2008 and 2011, Romina gained her training as a nail technician in a number of countries, one of which was Belgium where she gained a Basic Teaching Diploma. With further training, she obtained a Diploma in Advanced Teaching, as well as qualifications in Fusion Acrylic PhD, Reflections Design PhD, Gellish Hard Gel PhD and Gellish and Gellish Design PhD. This led to her reaching the Master Educator Level with the organisation, Nail Harmony. Romina also received training from Antonio Sacripante and Max Praga, two well-known personalities in this field. Romina has recently qualified as a Nail Master Educator in the art and sculpture of nails from the MBA Nails School in Hungary.

The first award she received dates back to December 2011, when Romina placed first out of 200 international competitors in the Competizione Italiana Unghie, which took place in Rome. With this award, she was able to participate in the Nailympics.

In September 2012, at the Nailympics, she was honoured with an array of awards namely:- 1st place in the Master Level Soak Off.- 1st runner up overall Certificate and Award.- 2nd place in the Master Level Nail Art- 2nd place in the Master Level Photo Competition- 3rd place in the Master Level Gels… and she also won Team Complete.

Last year, she participated in the Catania Fitness Show and there she was awarded third prize in the Stiletto Nails category. During this year’s edition of this show, she was awarded first prize in the Gold Cup Mixed Media / Tip Box, as well as receiving the second prize, the Silver Cup in Stiletto Nails. She participated in the two main categories, namely Stiletto and

Mixed Media. The Media Tip Box consists of telling a story by painting and using sculpture on the ten nails. Romina chose the theme of child abuse so as to increase awareness of this issue.

She also participated in the Latina Wellness Show in Italy and in this, she achieved the second prize in the Mixed Media category and was awarded the Silver medal.

The most prestigious award she has received so far is when she was awarded first place in the MBA International Competition, which took place in Hungary recently. Romina also placed first in the Gold Cup Nail Tip – Media Mixed Box, as well as in the Gold Cup Stiletto Nails. In this competition, she drew on jewellery, on a mobile phone cover, as well as on a set of stiletto nails, using the theme of fantasy for one of the categories. Stiletto nails are those long pointed nails on which nail technicians create beautiful artworks and sculptures. In another category, she presented work on the Mixed Media Tip Box.

Romina participated in the Malta Fashion Awards. During the Face of Malta Promotional Event, Romina displayed her work using two models who were dressed according to two themes of her choosing, namely a Japanese Geisha and an Ice Princess.

After four years of working with a company as a nail technician and beauty therapist, Romina opened up her own beauty business, the Beautilicious School in Mosta. The services it offers are beauty therapy, nails and haircare. She also gives training courses in this field.

Over the years, Romina has worked with a number of personalities as well as models and singers. Her work has often taken her overseas and on one occasion, she took part in the Milan Fashion Week where she worked with some very well-known models who were represented by Dsquared2. During this event, she used SU products.

When it comes to hair tools, one of the best investments you can make is in a hair straightener or as it is also known flat iron.

They are extremely versatile tools and it

doesn’t matter what type of hair you have - curly, wavy,

damaged, thick, fine, or even naturally straight - you will be able to benefit from this amazing hair tool.

On the other hand, choosing the right one that is ideal for you and your hair is not an easy task. It can be difficult to know what exactly you need and which brand. Before diving into the details of straightening irons, you ll need to determine your hair type. A person with fine, curly hair needs a different straightener than someone with thick, coarse hair.

Which type of plates?When looking at hair straighteners you should keep in mind the type of plate that it uses. You will find that the prices of hair straighteners will strongly reflect what type of plate it has. Metal or glass plates are commonly found on hair straighteners which are less expensive and for good reason.

These plates simply are not good for your hair. The plates do not heat very quickly which means it takes much longer to prepare the iron for styling and when they do heat up, these plates do not heat evenly, which will cause hot spots on the plates that can burn your hair. Often, glass and metal plates will be covered with paint which can chip or peel causing snags, pulls and tears in your hair. These hair straighteners often cause damage to the hair leaving it looking very unhealthy.

Ceramic plates heat up evenly, preventing any hot spots that can damage your hair. They also heat up very quickly which means that you can start styling when you are ready and not when your straightener is. Because they heat up very quickly, this means that there is less overall heat applied to the hair, decreasing the chance of damage. The ceramic works to smooth your hair, leaving it looking shiny and healthy. These irons also eliminate static, thus reducing frizz.

CHOOSING THE BEST HAIR sTraighTener OR FLaT irOn

temperature controlAlthough the plate type is probably the most important thing to look for in a hair straightener, it’s not the only thing. You will also want to look for an iron that has a temperature adjustment.

Being able to adjust the temperature is very important because not everyone’s hair is created in the same way. If you have damaged, colour treated or very fine hair, you will need

a lower temperature setting (180oC) so you don’t risk the possibility of burning or damaging your hair.

However, if you have very thick, coarse hair or have very tight curls, you will need a higher temperature setting (190-210oC) in order to achieve the effect you are looking for. Being able to adjust the temperature to suit your needs is a major bonus if you have any special considerations.

plates sizeIf you have short hair, you may wish to opt for a narrower iron, something that is only 1–1 1/2” wide. Narrow irons are also effective if you already have straight hair and are using the iron to create a greater shine hair.

The most common size for hair straighteners are 11/4” to 1 1/2”. However, if you have very long hair you may consider a 2” or 3” plate size in order to save time and get your straightening done more efficiently.

priceThe last thing to consider before making your decision is also one of the most important ones – the price of the hair straightener. Of course, you know what budget you have to work with, however we do recommend that you weigh all the options before making your decision. Cheaper hair irons are also of a cheaper quality. They will therefore not perform as well and they will very likely damage your hair. A professional hair straightener will last longer and give you the hairstyle you desire.

Be sure to balance all of the major factors when making your decision about which hair straightener will work best for you and you will soon have beautifully straight, shiny and healthy hair.

Another year has come and gone and we are once again preparing for the next edition of Miss World Malta, the only contest which is recognised to represent Malta in Miss World. The event is organised by Modelle International and the management is in the hands of Sue Rossi and Claudia Calleja who are the licence holders of Miss & Mr World.

Joanne Galea, the reigning Miss World Malta, was wonderful in this year’s finals of Miss World. As her reign draws to a close, she looks forward to sharing all her experiences with the new contestants of the next Miss World Malta.

Modelle International are currently looking for girls who are aged between 17 and 25 to participate in the next edition of Miss World Malta. In the months prior to the event, all contestants will take part in a TV show and they will also take part in different discussions related to fashion and beauty. The whole programme of events leading up to the event helps the contestants to develop their skills and achieve more confidence.

During the final night, the twenty four contestants in their ball gowns will be introduced on stage before going on the catwalk. The finalists are then interviewed before the winner of Miss World Malta is chosen.

Miss World is not just a beauty contest but it has also been recognised for its charity work under the slogan, Beauty with a Purpose. The organising team has managed to raise millions of pounds for worthy causes amongst all the participating countries. In fact, recently at the

30th Global Awards ceremony which was held in Mumbai, Julia Morley, Chairperson of Miss World Organisation, was recognised for her extensive humanitarian work. There, Ms Morley received the Partnership Academy’s Save the Children Global Award in recognition of her continuous efforts to enrich the lives of children across the world through the Miss World event.

In line with this, Joanne Galea has dedicated some of her time to help children with Dr. Klown, an NGO which is active in Mater Dei Hospital and which provides fun and laughter to children who are in hospital.

“I was inspired by Clown Doctors while I was trying to find a cause for my Beauty with a Purpose theme. I wanted to make a difference in someone s day and the memories of this experience will remain with me, forever. I was appointed as their ambassador and I have been going for regular training. The NGO Clown Doctors are incredible and work with such passion to entertain sick children. By putting on a red nose, they really make the children smile. They are fully trained and educated in this field and every activity is carefully planned for the best results.”
