Lapp Kabel and parcel service DPD present a pilot concept for electromobile deliveryn Lapp Kabel enables emissions-free parcel deliveries in the
southern suburbs of Stuttgart n DPD's electric vehicle is stationed permanently on the customer's
premises and charged by solar powern Electromobile delivery is supported by the Federal Government's
'Electromobility Shop Window' programme
Stuttgart, 30 June 2014 – The Stuttgart HQ of Lapp Kabel, a leading manufacturer and system supplier of connecting equipment, has become the permanent base of an electric vehicle operated by the international parcel service DPD. As a result Lapp Kabel is enabling emissions-free deliveries in Stuttgart's southern suburbs of Vaihingen, Büsnau and Kaltental. Thanks to Lapp Kabel's own solar installation the delivery vehicle, which is driven solely by electric power and is supported by the Federal Government's 'Electromobility Shop Window' programme, enables CO2-neutral deliveries. In addition a new logistics concept ensures the long-term reduction of transport journeys, accordingly reducing CO2 emissions in parcel shipping.
Commenting on the conclusion of the three-month test run Josef Holz,
Logistics Manager at Lapp Kabel, states "Thanks to the cooperation with our
service provider DPD we are able to exploit entirely new concepts of use for
electromobility", adding: "We are delighted that our joint model has been
successful in practice and can now become part of standard operations."
Delivery concept enlarges area of application for electromobility Gerd Seber, Sustainable Development Manager at DPD with responsibility for
the company's sustainability strategy, comments: "For parcel services the
limited range of electric vehicles is a significant problem, but thanks to Lapp
Kabel we can now also serve residential areas which were previously too far

away from our Ludwigsburg branch. This means that such cooperations could
extensively multiply the areas in which electric vehicles can operate."
This is also confirmed by Franz Loogen, manager of the 'e-mobil BW' state
agency: "Deliveries to urban districts represent an ideal area of application for
electromobility. In the 'Urban Logistics Business Transport' shop window
project the partners show clearly how useful and relevant electromobility can
be in daily life." In the Stuttgart and Karlsruhe conurbation e-mobil BW GmbH,
the state agency for electromobility and fuel-cell technology, coordinates the
'LivingLab BWe mobil' electromobility project, a Federal Government initiative
across four regions in different parts of Germany. In Baden-Württemberg DPD
is one of more than 100 project partners and is testing eight Vito E-Cells in its
operations in the Stuttgart conurbation.
Intelligent transport planning saves additional CO2 Because the DPD electric vehicle, a Mercedes-Benz Vito E-Cell, can start its
journey fully charged from the Lapp HQ in Stuttgart-Vaihingen and return there
after its tour, emissions-free delivery is now possible in the suburbs of
Vaihingen, Büsnau and Kaltental. Thanks to optimised tour planning the Vito
E-Cell can easily master the energy-intensive differences in height on the
route of the tour. At Lapp the vehicle begins from an elevated starting point
and has the advantage of the downhill slope as long as its load space is full.
The delivery tour ends in Kaltental, which is situated much lower, and as a
result the climbs on the return journey can for the most part be managed
without a full load.
The parcels which the Vito E-Cell delivers every day are transported from the
DPD depot in Ludwigsburg to Vaihingen by a lorry with a swap body and are
loaded onto the E-Cell there. In the afternoon a full lorry with a swap body
returns to Ludwigsburg, this time filled with Lapp Kabel parcels. Before the
start of the test run a conventional delivery vehicle used to be loaded in
Ludwigsburg for deliveries within the Vaihinger district. At the same time an
empty lorry with a swap body was driven to Lapp Kabel in order to pick up the
customer's parcels. In this new model there is no longer any need for the

delivery vehicle to drive backwards and forwards to the depot, making the new
delivery system significantly more efficient and saving on the number of
kilometres driven, which reduces the volume of CO2 generated even further.
On an annual basis Lapp Kabel and DPD expect savings of more than 8 t of
CO2.
Facts and figures about the Vito E-Cell from Mercedes-BenzThe Mercedes Benz Vito E-CELL is the world's first factory-built transporter to
operate on an electrical battery. In the year 2011 DPD was one of the initial
companies to start a four-year test run, continuously informing the
manufacturer about its experiences with the vehicle. With a permitted overall
weight of 3,050 kilos the Vito E-CELL has a payload of 900 kg. Its transport
operations are made possible by a relatively compact and accordingly light
lithium-ion battery with a high energy density compared to conventional
batteries. The electric drive system itself is integrated during the assembly of
the vehicle. The Vito E-CELL has a range of around 130 km, and its maximum
speed of 80 km/h is suitable for transport operations both in the city and for
short distances on country roads close to the city.

Über das Schaufenster Elektromobilität LivingLab BWe mobil
Presseinformation
