7th Grade ELA: We are continuing to discuss To Kill a Mockingbird. As we
continue with the novel, please keep using the following resources to aid with
comprehension and analysis: https://www.shmoop.com/to-kill-a-mockingbird/
and https://depreyenglishtkm.weebly.com/. Next week, we will be focusing
primarily on analyzing how particular elements of a story interact (RL 7.3). Students
will also continue developing their argumentative writing skills by working
collaboratively to craft an essay on a topic of their choice. Key concepts addressed
in this process will be gathering relevant information from multiple sources, using
search terms effectively; assessing the credibility and accuracy of each source; and
quoting or paraphrasing the data and conclusions of others while avoiding
plagiarism and following a standard format for citation (W 7.8).
8th Grade ELA: We are close to wrapping up our poetry unit, and students will
work to develop pieces of their own paying particular attention to the impact of
specific word choice including figurative and connotative meaning (RL 8.4). There
may be an assessment next week. Students have recently finished their first
argumentative essay produced in collaboration with their peers. Next, we will
continue to develop our writing skills by honing our research skills and focusing on
finding relevant information, appropriately paraphrasing or quoting material, and
providing documentation of the source (W8.8).
**The quarter is already halfway over! Is your student on the path to
getting their AR goal? It is very important that they stay motivated and read
every day. Even 15 minutes can significantly impact their ability.**

6th ELA– Next week we will warm our minds with Bellwork. This will be due
on Friday. I plan for us to continue working with arguments, by evaluating
pros and cons of different issues. We will begin to write our own argumenta-
tive soon. During literature we will have an assessment on “Exploring the Ti-
tanic” on Tuesday. The rest of the week we will focus on different elements of
short stories and how they contribute to the overall text.
5th ELA– Next week we will warm up with Study Island. We will have a short
session on five different skills and take an overall grade on Friday. You will be
given a tracking sheet Monday. Our focus in LA will be narrative writing.
Bring your creativity with you next week! As for literature our focus is to ana-
lyze how visual and multimedia elements contribute to a text. This includes
illustrations, graphs, charts, and videos.
The Fourteenth Annual Bulldog Dash
will be held Saturday, May 19, at
Schoendienst Park in Germantown.
The 5K Run/Walk begins at 9 a.m.
followed by the 2K Run/Walk at 10
a.m.
The Bulldog Dash Run/Walk is a
fundraiser sponsored and promoted
by members of the community to
benefit the children of Germantown
Elementary.
As one of the most established 5K
races in the area, the Bulldog Dash
consistently draws a great mix of
competitive runners, local supporters,
and students. In 2017, approximately
500 participants registered for the
two events.
The start and finish lines for all
events will be held at Schoendienst
Field, just off Route 161 in German-
town.
Event T-shirts will be provided for
pre-registered entrants. Registration
is $20 for anyone who has their regis-
tration form postmarked by May 1.
The fee for registrations after May 1
and on race day is $25. We are offer-
ing online registration once again this
year at https://
bulldogdash2017.itsyourrace.com/
register/. Race day registration is also
available from 7:45 to 8:45 a.m. Race
packets can be picked up between
7:45 and 8:45 a.m. on the day of the
race. Go
to www.germantownbulldogs.org to
find the Bulldog Dash drop down
menu and the registration form.
Awards will be presented with tro-
phies given to the top three males
and females in each event and med-
als awarded to the top three males
and females in each age category for
each event. In addition, a participa-
tion medal will be presented to each
participant age 9 and under. The
committee also awards a trophy to
the top 5K male and female finisher in
