JUNICHI FUKUDA - After receiving Bachelor degree in Dance Performance from Boston Conserv-atory, Junichi began his professional career. First, he became a member of Ballet Tech in New York City, under the direction of Eliot Feld, a world-renowned choreographer. Moving to San Francisco in 2003, Junichi joined Oakland Ballet and later became affiliated as a soloist with Smuin Ballet/SF directed by Michael Smuin (former artistic director at San Francisco Ballet). Returning to New York City in 2005, Junichi began dancing with Lar Lubovitch Dance Company as a soloist. He joined Nejla Yatkin’s NY2 Dance in 2009 to be a part of the Berlin Wall Project, Cityfeatured by the New York Times, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall in New York. Junichi has been a member of Buglisi Dance Theatre, New York Baroque Dance Company, the Peridance Con-temporary Dance Company, Bowen McCauley Dance, and Christopher K. Morgan & Artists where he is featured in many prominent roles. In addition to his performance with Buglisi Dance Theatre at the Joyce Theater in New York City, Junichi has toured throughout the US and overseas in Italy, Germany, Spain, Israel, France and Japan.

Junichi has worked with leading US choreographers such as Jacqulyn Buglisi (artistic director of Buglisi Dance Theatre, former principal of the Martha Graham Dance Company), Seán Curran (original member of an off-Broadway performance “Stomp” and artistic Director of NYU Tish Dance Department), Eliot Feld, Paul Taylor (artistic director of Paul Taylor Dance Company), Igal Perry (artistic director of Peridance Contemporary Dance Company, former faculty of the dance division of the Juilliard School), Michael Smuin, Catherine Turocy (artistic director of New York Baroque Dance Company), and Lar Lubovitch (artistic director of Lar Lubovich Dance Company). Junichi performed with world-famous dancers, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Jose Manuel Carreno (a former princi-pal with American Ballet Theatre), Desmond Richardson (Complexions), Rasta Thomas, Martine van Hamel, and Robert La Fosse.

Junichi has been active as a choreographer and his pieces have premiered in Boston, New York City, San Francisco, Washington DC, France, Spain, and Japan. He became an assistant choreogra-pher to Igal Perry, shaping pieces for Perry’s company and also for Complexions and Joffrey Ballet Ensemble. In 2006, Junichi was commissioned to create “KAGI” for the Buglisi Dance Theatre, as well as “White Dress” for Peridance Capezio Center in 2007. His duet “City of...” was chosen to be presented at the American Dance Guild Festival 2009 in New York City, which was restaged for Ci-tyDance Conservatory in Washington DC to perform in Brazil. Junichi collaborated with Baltimore base the Atlantic Guitar Quartet to create his signature multi-media solo “ECLOSION”, which was selected by numerous festivals and competitions, most recently by 18MASDANZA International Contemporary Dance Festival in Spain. He became a guest choreographer with Christopher K. Morgan & Artists in 2013 and with Bowen McCauley Dance in 2014.

Junichi is a recipient of 2012 S&R Washington Award, Dance Place’s 2012 New Releases Commission, and 2013 Performing Artist of the Year from RAW Washington DC. I was also nominated as the 2013 best individual performance of the year from Dance Metro DC Award.

Junichi explores his possibilities by challenging in numerous styles of dance. His currently interest is to discover a new way of movements by collaborating with artists in different genre.

Junichi Fukuda’s Eclosion uses slow motion and fast-paced projections of mental images to jux-tapose our nonchalance toward the familiar against the surge of emotions and recollections that come with stepping into uncharted territory. His performance quality, distinct compositional structure, and a delicate balance between athletic, frenzied movements and intimate floor work collaborated for an exceptional solo.

Eclosion, choreographed and performed by Junichi Fukuda and set to Olivier Bensa’s La grande terre, followed Vasilaky’s work. Fukuda’s use of repetition and the perimeter of the stage space were hypnotizing, as he jogged his memory and certain moments stuck out more than oth-ers for him before our eyes. The juxtaposition of his athletic movement phrases with his hands in his pockets and an inward focus was beautiful. His movement walked the line between frenetic and minimal, and perfectly mirrored the music.
