June Program
At our June meeting, get ready to be wowed by the blue ribbon winners from
our CBRIS show. The medals, rosettes and ribbons will be presented. Photos
will be taken and it is a good time to review our Iris show.
As many of you already know, several CBRIS members are also Chrysanthemum
enthusiasts and belong to the Bay Area Chrysanthemum Society. Jane Jordan
will present an introduction to Growing Chrysanthemums. Chrysanthemums
were first cultivated in China as early as 1500 B C. Around the 8th century A D,
the Japanese adopted the Mum as the official flower of the Emperor. Mums
came to the Western world in the 17th century. Mums are now the “Queen of
the Fall Flowers” in the United States. There are so many varieties of mums
that a system of classification is used to categorize and identify them. Mums
can be a landscaping plant or with disbudding, a single large bloom for
competitions.
The Bay Area Chrysanthemum Society
will hold a cutting sale on at Yamagami's
on June 3-4.
There will be a ten minute period on questions
and answers regarding iris culture especially in
regard to what should be done after the iris finishes blooming.
Hope to see all of you there. Carolyn Craft & Philippa Alvis, CBRIS Co-Vice-Presidents
Who won the CBRIS People’s Choice Award???
Come to the June 2nd meeting to find out the answer.
Jane Jordan

AIS Symposium Voting – Carolyn If you are an AIS member, you may vote for your favorite iris. This is the annual popular vote for Tall Bearded iris. There are 475 irises on the ballot and you may vote for a total of 25. Do not vote for more than 25 or your ballot will be invalidated; write-in votes are not accepted.
You should only vote for an iris if you have seen it in bloom, preferably somewhere locally.
You may mail or email your ballot to the AIS VP by Sept. 1, 2017. Results of the voting will be printed in the January issue and posted on the AIS website.

Iris Show-and-Tell Members were asked to bring in iris currently blooming in their garden to share with the club. Spurias were well-represented, shared by Mary, Linda, Lisa, Carol, Philippa, and Carolyn, who noted that her favorite is ‘Midnight Rival’, a deep velvety purple. Carolyn also brought a Watsonia in a lovely coral color, which she said wasn't even the prettiest in her garden! Carol brought in several TBs, including ‘Sara Lester’, a historic dating to 1949. Marilyn, Alice and Andrea brought in multiple TB blooming beauties. There was also a sprinkling of Siberians. Break for refreshments. Annual Picnic – Chris Get ready for the annual club picnic and auction on July 16. Sign up for refreshments! We will return to the Pavilion in Ortega Park in Sunnyvale.
Respectfully submitted,
Lynn Stuart, CBRIS Secretary

Health Update
Helen Bliven, long time member, a past president
of CBRIS and Master Judge, will be having
extensive, but unexpected heart surgery on June 1,
2017. For the past two months, Helen has been
hospitalized in a rehab and is now staying with
one or the other of her sons while awaiting surgery.
Helen says that she misses her iris contacts and
feels left out of the loop’. She would enjoy hearing
from her friends in CBRIS to catch up on their
activities and to keep updated on CBRIS news.
Please address cards and correspondence to
Helen Bliven, in care of: Kent and JoAnn Bliven,
5180 Camino Alta Mira, Castro Valley, CA 95425.
Helen’s cell # is 408-227-7513.
Kent has promised to keep CBRIS updated on his
Mother’s situation and will be receiving her mail
until further notice.

Merry Days of June
June 1 – ‘Dare Day’ – Prank, challenge or action? Double dog dare or triple dog dare? I triple dog dare you to pull
weeds in my iris garden without getting caught. So there!
June 6 – ‘National Gardening Exercise Day’ – Good for the mind, body and soul!
Check your irises to see what they may need this month.
June 8 – ‘Best Friends Day’ – Friends are there for you in the good and bad times.
Mine is there when the irises are blooming and when they need weeding. I guess that
makes them the BEST!
June 10 – ‘Iced Tea Day – Summer is coming. Get your iris garden chores done, find a chair or a hammock under
a shady tree and have a nice cold glass of iced tea. Hey, wouldn’t that be a good name for the right brown iris?
June 14 – ‘National Flag Day’ – Always celebrate Flag Day by wearing red, white and blue and taking a friend out to
see the old fashioned Blue Flag Iris and the Yellow Flags. Look for them in the summer along wetlands, streams,
rivers or lakes.
June 18 – ‘Father’s Day’ and ‘National Splurge Day’ – Well, you know where I am going with this one. First
remember your father or the father of your children! And then a day to treat yourself to ANYTHING that you want.
I intend on celebrating this day to the fullest. A new order of irises will soon be coming my way!
June 21 – ‘Summer Solstice’ – The longest day of the year. Plenty of time to work
in your iris garden!
June 23 – ‘National Pink Day’ – A poem from long ago…Pink, pink, you stink! Ha!
When it comes to irises the pinks are beautiful! This year my garden has a new pink iris
blooming called ‘Pink Positive’. It is a keeper.
June 29 – ‘Camera Day’ – Say cheese! Here I come with that camera! Pictures of
you and pictures of your irises. Remember to send iris photos in to the newsletter
editor. We LOVE photos!

2018 Spring Regional – ‘Butterflies in the Mountains’
Come and be part of the Spring Regional, Friday May 11 until Sunday May 13, 2018. The guest speaker is
Rick Tasco of Superstition Iris Gardens.
This will be an opportunity for Region 14 folks to visit irises blooming at a higher elevation, around 3,000 ft. Due
to the fact the bloom season is later, the Spring Regional is scheduled for a later date than our usual meetings.
Also, we are competing with the beginning of the Yosemite traffic tourist season, thus requiring some ‘out of the
box’ thinking about the hotels and event meeting place. This is going to be a ‘down home’ event in the Sierra
Foothills of Yosemite and the Region is hosting with the assistance of San Joaquin Iris Society. SJIS will also be
organizing the lunch in Kanarowski’s garden. An AIS sanctioned show will be hosted by Yosemite Iris Society.
The registration fee has not been set, but we wanted you to have information about the hotels available in the
area so you can make reservations as soon as possible. There will be no meeting hotel, but all activities will take
place at the Bootjack Stompers Hall. There are other hotels in addition to those mentioned in Mariposa, and it will
be up to you to choose where you want to stay. Mariposa is approximately 40 minutes from Merced, where you
can find other hotels which may be more reasonable.
Kathy Braaten is chairing the event if you have any questions please feel free to call 530-477-2811 or email

‘Iris Express’
The AIS Region 14 Spring Regional was co-hosted by the Sacramento Iris Society and the Yosemite Iris Society. It
was held at the Crowne Plaza in Sacramento on April 21-23.
CBRIS was well represented with 18 members in attendance. The iris show was spectacular. There were so many
entries that the business meeting started an hour late waiting for the judging to finish. The entries were of the highest
quality. There were so many blue ribbons that the judges were challenged to pick the best of sections and the best
of show.
The guest iris were growing in two gardens, Mary Ann Horton's garden in Loomis and Fran
Shields' garden in Elk Grove. Both gardens displayed the guest iris nicely as well as their
own collections of iris. The attendees voted for the best iris in the following categories:
Knopf Cup for the best seedling by a Region 14 hybridizer – Doug Kanarowski for
QBDX40PQ; Out of Region Award - Keith Keppel for ‘Flash Mob’; Cotillion Cup for the
best current introduction by a Region 14 hybridizer - Doug Kanarowski for ‘Tropical Fruit
Salad’; Clara B. Rees Cup for the best introduced iris prior to the current year - Rick
Tasco for ‘Autumn Explosion’; Jim Gibson Cup for the best plicata within the last five
years – Keith Keppel for ‘Ghirardelli Square’; Hager-Dubose Memorial Cup for the best
bearded other that Tall - Chad Harris for ‘Black Cherry Sorbet’ an MTB.
There were two judges' training sessions during the Regional both presented by
Dell Perry from Plano, Texas. She also gave the after dinner talk Saturday evening.
The first JT session was titled “What are the rules”. She talked about various rules
that different clubs and regions make up for Exhibition judging because the Judges'
Handbook does not specify how certain issues should be handled. She stressed
that the show schedule is the ultimate authority for a given show.
The second session was Tall Bearded garden training in Mary Ann Horton's garden on
Sunday morning. Dell Perry evaluated several iris clumps pointing out the good points
and the faults.
The after dinner talk Saturday was about Arils and Arilbreds. Dell started with slides of the
Aril species Oncocyclus and Regelia that showed their specific characteristics. Then she
showed how those characteristics vary with different percentages of the two species and
tall/median bearded iris.
On our way home on Sunday some of us stopped by Ruth Ostroff's garden in Rio Linda. More irises to view in a
lovely garden. Jane Jordan

Love irises? Pick a specialty club to join and learn more. This month we are featuring the Society for Louisiana Irises (SLI).
A small group of South Louisiana growers and collectors met in 1941 with the idea of preserving and promoting
interest in the Louisiana iris. Louisianas are derived from five species. You may read their mission statement at:
http://www.louisianas.org/index.php/mission’. To see some Louisiana beauties check out Kalpana’s photos on
page 4 of this newsletter. These are photos from her garden this year.

Culture
Our main iris bloom season is almost over. The last few
days of heat definitely did not help extend the blooms.
Keep your irises watered until the end of June. Then
you may let them go into dormancy for digging in July
or August. Remember our club picnic and rhizome sale!
The club is good about sharing their irises with others. I
will restart our Wistful Corner list so club members may
add something special to their gardens this year.
