Feb 2012 Section Meeting at Stud Welding Products update On February 22, 2012 AWS held their meeting in Downey at the Stud Welding Products facilities. This was one of the largest AWS turn outs, which had more than sixty members present. It was great to see so many new faces of established welders, and also the younger, up and coming generation of welders. The higher than usual turnout was even more fabulous because of the tasty Mexican buffet that was provided. Stud Welding Products was founded in 1981 and is independently owned and operated in the United States. Stud Welding’s main objective was and is assisting end user’s with applications, repairs and equipment. Stud Welding distributes and manufactures weld studs, and welding equipment. Stud Welding’s expertise, service and support are what separate them from other SWP competitors. Stud Welding was invented during WWII between 1941 and 1942, by a visionary named Ted Nelson in California. His original intention was to attach wood decking to carriers and battleships. Threaded studs were created to meet wartime needs. Today, state and federal agencies require automated stud welding in many field applications and OSHA re-quirements must be met and administered outside the field for safety. Stud Welding is completed in two common processes; arc and capacitator discharge. The Arc Process is a controlled electric arc used to melt the end of a stud or electrode, ending with the use of a positive ground. The Capacitor Discharge Process is when a welder uses the capacitor to store the charge-energy and is released simultaneously. Advantages of Stud Welding are:

Labor savings

Industry advances make process efficient

Stronger Welds are achieved

Distortion is eliminated

Certified Weld Studs- Certified Material Test Report

No Welder Certification required

Weld out of position available

Weld Inside and outside of angle iron

Eliminates Drilling and tapping

As usual AWS has it’s raffle cash give away and the donation of a DWS 1.1 Book. The winner was Robert Amstrong.

District 21 Annual Conference On June 2nd the district 21 conference took place in Tucson, AZ. The meeting was held at the Double Tree hotel and lead by our district director Nannette Samanich.

For those of you that are not familiar how AWS membership is organized, it is divided into districts and each one of them is subdivided into sec-tions. Our section consists of LA and Inland Empire areas, expanding from Santa Monica bay to Coachella Valley desert areas, and from the High Desert all the way down to San Diego county line, excluding Orange county and Long Beach.

District 21 includes the following sections: San Diego, Orange county/Long Beach, San Fernando valley, California Central Coast, Kern county, Las Vegas, NV, Arizona, and Hawaii.

At the annual district conference we had the pleasure and privilege of meeting with the officers from the districts mentioned above. We regret that Kern county section was not represented and hope to see them at 2013 conference.

At the meeting each section gave a presentation on the current activities, goals, and achievements.

The minutes of the meeting will be posted on our website as soon as we get them ready. Please take the time to read though them to understand better how AWS operates behind the scenes.

All members are always welcome to volunteer their time and effort, and participate at the section level to become involved with the our executive committee.

The highlights of the conference meeting were the selection of student scholarship awards. Our section nominated Kenny Reid to attend the Instructor's Institute at National Headquarters in Miami, and Tim Serviss to participate in the Leadership Symposium at National as well. Both were selected by a majority vote to attend this events, all expenses paid by AWS.

When the meeting was adjourned we took a break and went to a great local restaurant called "Old Pueblo Grille" for a fun time.

Events like these allow us to spend time with such good people that volunteer and dedicate themselves to make AWS a great society .

While in Tucson, we indulged in some tamales from Tucson Tamale Co. which were by far the best tamales in the world. Serious considerations were taken among some of us, who ventured out, to move near the location to enjoy these delicatessen all year long! Tucson Tamale Co. / Welding school coming soon… By Mariana Ludmer (section secretary)
