Vol. XIX No. 10
Dear Scintillating Superstars,
Ready? Take your victory pose! For an
entire month it seems like we’ve been
celebrating victories. Car parties,
Quarterly Star Events, the Dog Chop, the
Black & White Ball, and now we’re
headed for Seminar. Does this happen in
the everyday world, or is this just for us
who live in the pink bubble of Mary Kay?
How do you think it feels when you
know that 150
people are headed
to your house?
Besides praying it
won’t rain, how
would you feel?
Would you have
pictured our
limestone
terraces overflow-
ing with winners?
Would you have
thought we’d need an outdoor tent to
seat us, as we brought up the car drivers
and DIQs and new directors? Would you
have known that a starry night is the best
place to hear stories of how contacts and
IPAs and faces can create dreams that
come true? After everyone left, and I was
looking out at the lake, I knew this 19
year Dog Chop tradition had more power
than I could ever have imagined.
My Mom has her own tradition
of 19 years. I think that’s how many Black
& White Balls she’s attended. She’ll be 90
this month, and wasn’t sure she could
make it, but my sister dropped her off in
her wheelchair, and she was decked out in
the new necklace I got for her birthday.
She used to come to cheer for
me. Then she came to cheer for her
granddaughter. Now, she’s cheering
for our Future National Area. For
years I’ve been sending her these
monthly newsletters. She gets Amy’s
also, and I always send her a copy of
Sandy’s newsletter with what all the
directors and their units are doing.
She told me she spends an hour
reading them. She’s GOT you all
down. She might call
you, “Teresa’s grand-
daughter”, or the
“one whose husband
is a principal”, or “the
little one from
Sheridan”, but she
knows who you are,
and honestly, she
knows exactly how
well you’re doing. She
checks out the
Queens and the Courts and the ones
who sit at the head table. And now
she’s asking me FREQUENTLY, how
many more directors do you need?
How many do you have? When do
you have to be done?
So we’re being watched. We’re
being applauded. We’re being
recognized for setting HUGE goals,
for making them happen, and for
knowing how to CELEBRATE. Get
ready for a whole year of VICTORY
poses. I can feel “IT” coming on!
Love and belief,

THIS MONTH’S ISSUE OF:
IF SHE CAN, I CAN! Each month I will feature a different Future Martin Area Director in our newsletter.
Director Name: Janet Kotecki
Former Occupation: Registered Nurse
City/State: Peru, IL
Joined Mary Kay: 2005
Debuted as a director: 2008
# of months of driving free: Vibe for 1 year then Premier Club
Highest commission check in one month:
What was the sequence of events that brought you into the company (recruiting layering
process)?
1. I had been a customer for about 5 years.
2. Loved what products I was using.
3. Would hear of Jeanie Martin’s success through a mutual friend (my neighbor). Even knew once that
Jeanie's Pink Cadillac was parked in our friend’s garage while they were gone on a trip. So, I went to my
neighbor’s house and into her garage to take a sneak peak at the car. Then went home to get my
husband so that he could see it also. (Jeanie, don't know if I ever told you that one.)
4. Once Jeanie called me and made me feel so special because she invited ME to a guest event. I went to
a Garden Party at NSD Sandy Miller’s house. Was totally overwhelmed. Maybe she should have started at
a smaller version of an event!
5. After retiring from my nursing job, started asking more questions and liked the fact that I could get
my products for 50% off retail.
Why did you join? I joined Mary Kay after retiring from my nursing job of 25 years. I had been using
Mary Kay for a long time but after retiring I went through a time when I didn't feel like I should be
spending money on my own personal products. Thought it would be great to get all of my products at the
50% discount. Never had a vision or a dream of working it like a real business and certainly didn't think I
could even do that.
Why did you want to be a director? I didn't, until I caught on and saw the big picture. I never
thought I was able to be a Director. That was for someone else, certainly not me. After working as a con-
sultant and seeing that I could sell the product and then even earn a free car, I wanted more from the
opportunity. I also started to feel that I deserved more. I was growing confidence in myself and wanted
to be able to pass that on to other women. Because if I could do it, so could another women.
Page 11
Has there been a dark season in your Mary Kay career? Yes, there have been dark seasons.
Just like anybody else, I don't believe anyone's life is always a bed of roses. I do believe though that
the positive part of Mary Kay has helped me to get through those times more easily.
When I first started my business I had family members criticize what I was going to do and
even tried to find things wrong with the company. It made me angry and more determined to succeed.
Still to this day I have immediate family members who refuse to purchase anything, but I have
learned to just deal with it and consider it their loss. I have realized so much about not trying to figure
out why some people act the way they do, and I realize that I can not change them. Before it would
upset me because I just couldn't understand why someone would be like that.
What is the one thing that was difficult for you or you were afraid of in this
business? Simply failing, and having to tell people that. But I have realized that if you just do what
you are supposed to do, you won't fail. I was also afraid of being rejected. I do believe though that
the majority of the time if someone says NO, they are not saying no to YOU. It is just a bad day or
time for them. I remember that I heard, "Accept a person for who they are on that particular day."
Nothing is to say that on a different day things could turn out totally different.
During what time period did you have the greatest growth of income and what was the growth? Whenever I was given a challenge. Even though we all might give a huge sigh when there
are challenges given, they are given to help us move.
I remember doing a 10 show week to be able to sleep at NSD Sandy Miller’s house. By doing
that challenge my sales were incredible, and I started to expect those sales every week. I remember
selling $3000 in a week during another challenge. I never would have come up with that fund raiser if
I wasn't give a huge challenge. I remember going to the Million Dollar Weekend because of a
challenge. I remember going to Las Vegas for a weekend because of a challenge. I could go on and
on because of challenges that were given to help me grow my business.
What do you attribute the growth? I attended everything!!! Not having money was not an excuse.
I could always go out and sell more product to earn the money. I do believe that we have to invest
money to make money.
Also when I received an email from my Director Jeanie Martin, I never gave it a second
thought. I just knew to respond back right away. I never held it on the back burner. I knew what I
was being told to do by my Director was only information that was going to help me in some way. Why
would she give me information that was going to hurt me? Think about that the next time your
Director suggests something to you. She is never going to intentionally tell you something that could
hurt you.
What advice would you give a consultant that wants to be a Director? Make sure you have a
strong team to start with. You have to have workers. You don't want to struggle every month to meet
production. Also, take advantage of all the opportunities your Director gives you to bring guests to
events. Whether it is your weekly meeting or a special event, you should always work on bringing a
guest. Jeanie would laugh at me sometimes because I would do anything to bring a guest to a
meeting. There were times when I just met someone that day, and they were my guest. I usually
didn't tell them that we were driving 1 hour each way to get there either. I would just tell them what
time I would be picking them up and dropping them off. Many a times they would say in the car,
"Where are we going and how much farther?” I would just say we are almost there and keep talking
and maybe drive a little bit faster.
I would also suggest that they invest wherever their weakness might be.
