Bless Th is Home -By Ron Hanson [email protected]
Jesus, near the end of His earthly ministry, prays the following out of John 17:20-23: 20 “I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, 21 that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.22 The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one, 23 I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me. This prayer for unity comes after Jesus speaking to the scattering of the disciples in John 16: 32, “Behold, the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home, and will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me.” Jesus is speaking speciBcally about the coming persecution of the church that would cause the disciples to hide in their homes but the church today faces other challenges that keep us scattered. Although New Brighton Christian Church is a relatively small congregation, unity for any group of people can be diCcult to achieve. The cause of disunity, a pervasively human characteristic, is not always a direct conDict. The necessity to reach out and meet new people may not be highlighted. The opportunities to spend time with people outside of our typical social groups may be lacking. New Brighton Christian Church will be spending the summer of 2017 focused on bringing this necessity to attention and providing opportunity to participate in our Koinonia campaign. Koinonia (koy-nohn-eé-ah) is a transliterated form of the Greek word, κοινωνία, which means communion, joint participation; the share which one has in anything, participation, a gift jointly contributed, a collection, a contribution. It identiBes the idealized state of fellowship and unity that should exist within the Christian church, the Body of Christ. New Brighton Christian Church will work towards this state of Koinonia by intentionally increasing the level of engagement with one another. First, on June 11th NBCC will host a Lemonade Mixer following the service to o?er an opportunity to fellowship with folks you haven’t gotten to meet yet. Secondly, throughout the rest of the summer we will continue to encourage get togethers outside of the worship service time. I believe taking a few steps in this direction will increase the “idealized state of fellowship and unity that should exist within the Christian church” I hope that we can all be a part of the prayer that Jesus o?ers up to His Father, “that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you…”
Wouldn’t you love to see your home and family blessed? But when you look at a lot of families
today, in general, the Brst word that does not come to your mind is the word "blessed." We
might be more likely to use the word struggling; marriages are not what they could be, raising the kids is really
diCcult, it’s tough living paycheck to paycheck.
In Matthew 5:6 Jesus said “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be Blled.” Could it
be that our families and homes are not blessed because we're Blling our lives with things that don't matter, and we're
not as blessed as we could be because we're not hungering and thirsting for righteousness, for right living, for doing
the right thing in the way we live to please God?
In Psalm 63:1 David wrote, “You, God, are my God. Earnestly I seek you. Earnestly I thirst for you. My whole being
longs for you in a dry and parched land where there is no water.” But think about the things we hunger and thirst for
in place of God. "Oh, popularity, you are my God. I long for you in a dry and weary land" That sounds silly, doesn't it?
"Oh, championship of the 8-and-under Soccer League, you are my God. I long for you." It seems ridiculous, right? "Oh,
new car, my backside longs for leather seats and bun warmers. You are my God" -- it's just crazy when you think of it
like that. And yet, that's the way so many of us live, and we wonder why we're so empty. "Blessed are those who
hunger and thirst for righteousness. For you will be #lled."
This summer is a great time to make the changes that will help you and your family be Blled with more of God. First
of all, involve God in your daily conversations. As you wake up at the cabin, you could say about the sunrise, “That is
so cool”; or you could say, “Look at that cool sunrise God gave
us.” You’re simply showing that God is a normal and expected
part of your conversations.
Secondly, make church a non-negotiable. Even in the summer.
Even when you’re traveling. You make a priority of the worship of
your God something that is non-negotiable. Take one hour a
week to honor the Creator and Sustainer of this universe who
sent his son, Jesus, to live and die for the forgiveness of our sins.
And third, make seeking and receiving God fun. If you’re not
already doing a regular family devotion time, summer is a great time to start. And when you do, make it fun! Instead
of gathering around the table, which is a very adult thing to do, why not lay with your kids on the Door? How about
making hair-dos with your kids, then talking about how Jesus changes our life? How about letting each kid squeeze
out a tube of toothpaste and then try to put it back in the tube? What could your kids learn from that? What could
your kids learn from building a fort, playing with Dashlights, or saying tongue twisters? Have you seen what Kristie
has been able to teach in our children’s sermons with things like plants and candy canes and Lucky Charms and
empty eggs?
Lead toward a Christ-centered culture in your home. Can you show it is a blessing to serve God? Yes, you can. Can
you make church a priority? Yes, you can. Can you involve God in your conversations? Yes, you can. When you
choose to hunger and thirst for righteousness, you will be Blled with God.
May this summer be a time of great 2lling, and may God bless your home.
When you choose to hunger and
thirst for righteousness, you will
be #lled with God.

This summer, our Junior Worship & Wee Worship classes will be exploring “Adventures in Acts!” The kids are learning about the start of the early church, and how the Holy Spirit helped the apostles spread the good news…”in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8)
A Time To Grow When Aaron & I got married, we had small Dowerpots of ivy decorating each table at the reception. At the end of the day, we gave those Dowerpots to family and friends who had helped to shape our special day. I also kept one for myself, but my plant quickly died in my care. However, my grandmother took her tiny ivy home and nurtured that plant. Just a few months ago, she sent the plant back to me, now fully grown. What had started as a tiny sprig of ivy in a six-inch pot had developed into a large, thriving plant. In my grandmother’s watchful care, it had Dourished. Though my gardening skills are lacking, I do love the many references in the Bible about plants and seeds and growing. They provide such a great visual for how we should grow and thrive in Christ. But gardeners know that plants also teach patience. Things don’t sprout up overnight. Sometimes teaching is much the same way. Seeds are planted and ideas begin to take root, but the evidence may not appear immediately. Whether it’s teaching a child to read, or introducing him to the gospel, these are seeds that must be gently tended to. In 1 Corinthians 3:6-7, Paul says, “I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow.” While I don’t intend to compare myself with Paul, you and I, dear friends, have been planting and watering seeds in the children’s ministry department of New Brighton Christian Church. Every class taught and question answered . . . seeds planted. Every song sang or encouragement given…seeds watered. I’m thankful to have served in this garden with you.
I have found myself thinking, talking, and worrying about money a lot lately. At the
end of 2016, the Elders and committee chairs were trying to cut the future budget
by 10% without dramatically impacting the congregation. The Brst quarter of 2017
has found us in a similar position already in this young year. At the time I am writing
this article, NBCC will have a shortage of funds for the rest of the year. On the
surface, all of these things can be stressful and weigh on one’s soul. I came across a
scripture passage recently that seemed to both ease and strengthen my state of
mind. Proverbs 23:4 says “Do not wear yourself out to get rich; do not trust your own
cleverness.”
This passage is refreshing, and yet humbling. There is no strategy, no best laid plan, no course of action man can take
that will trump the Power or the Will of God. He has never asked us to plan, worry, or think our way out of a problem.
We are to be obedient, humble, and generous. The only way for NBCC to continue to glorify God as a congregation is to
be faithful, obedient, and diligent in our pursuit of HIS wisdom. I pray that you Bnd peace and reassurance in Proverbs 23
like I have. I pray that the ministry of NBCC continues and Dourishes in the months and years to come.
“There is no strategy, no best
laid plan, or no course of action
man can take that will trump the
Power or the Will of God.“
Our theme and mission for Togo was to “go into all the world and preach the gospel” from Matthew 28. And truly the gospel is being proclaimed in Togo through Operation Christmas Child! The men and women who work as Togo’s National Leadership Team are amazing people, with a deep love and passion for spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ. Over 100 churches have been planted in Togo as a direct result of children receiving the boxes since 2001. Forty percent of Togo’s population are children between the ages of 2 and 14. The children also are given an opportunity to study the gospel through “The Greatest Journey”, a 12 week discipleship course which is provided by Samaritan’s Purse. At each shoebox distribution, we saw the gospel being presented through song, dance, the Bible, and words. We saw a Muslim girl cry as the gospel was presented. We saw another Muslim girl stand to receive Jesus, and we saw a Muslim mother reading “The Greatest Gift” booklet that her child had received. And there were also many other children who responded to the gospel, even before they knew they would receive a gift!
After the shoeboxes and the gospel booklet in their own language are given, the children wait to open until we count down 3-2-1 so they all open at the same time. There are many squeals of joy! Then we’re able to visit with the children,
exclaim over their gifts and read, through interpreters, letters that shoebox givers have sent. The churches there are very poor. Most were just a space with a roof over it, and dirt Doors. It was right next to a garbage dump, and the people there were very poor. One church had sides and another had a half wall. Another one was completely outside in an area where there were several trees for shade. We were able to observe a “Greatest Journey” class. The teacher did a tremendous job, and the children, who were on lesson 7, still remembered all 7 Bible verses they had learned. Your shoebox gifts and/or any money you’ve given has had a tremendous impact all over the world. The box is a tool given as humanitarian aid, that allows it to get through Customs even in hostile countries so pastors, teachers, and missionaries can share the gospel. If you’ve given to Samaritan’s Purse and OCC, you are also a missionary! Thank you! God is on the move. Halleluiah!

YOUTH MISSIONS TRIP 2017
At 5,000 feet above sea level, the views in Loveland, Colorado will take your breath away. But being surrounded by beauty can mask the challenges and struggles of the community. Like many places around the country, the aYuent developments on the edge of town don’t tell the whole story of the many people with unmet needs. While the youth spend time with the elderly, the disabled, and the homeless, they might just realize that through serving others, it is their lives being changed.
The youth group will enter into the lives of others and build relationships with the people of Loveland, together experiencing God working through them at projects such as these:
• Accompany special needs children on outings like trips to parks, museums, Old Town, the library, and the swimming pool.
• Serve at an equine outreach center through outdoor work projects and assisting with therapy classes and summer camps.
• Help run a local vacation Bible school.
• Assist with a community feeding program by delivering food and interacting with the children.
• Serve with an organization whose goal is to care for and support adults with special needs.
Please pray for the youth and all the leaders going that God will work through them in mighty ways.
