June Demo: Urban Sketching!

Founder of Two Year Old Urban Sketchers-Tacoma (serving all of Pierce County),

Frances Buckmaster is the featured artist

Please do not park in the visitor’s spaces in front of the church.

The Global Urban Sketchers Movement began just a bit up I-5….and, it has gone global! Urban Sketchers-Tacoma is celebrating its two-year anniver-sary. I’m an “Urban Sketcher! ” What does that mean? See the work of local and global Urban Sketchers & learn the benefits of social media; Hear about pe-

ripheral activities-opportunities connected to Urban Sketching; Preview typical sketching equipment and popular Urban Sketching books; Learn the July & August sketching locations & be invited to join the group for sketch-outs. After first training in commercial art, Frances studied fine arts at several universities around the U.S., then, plein air oil painting with Michael Stasinos and Marc Hanson, oil painting with David Gray and Elizabeth Robbins, and watercolor & gou-ache with Carla O’Connor. With a degree in English, she taught Jr. High School. Post-grad she studied Business

(Marketing) for three years and also became a Commercial Real Estate Broker, serving small in-vestment groups. After 4 years in seminary, she earned a Master of Divinity degree and was ordained as a Unitarian Universalist minis-ter. She served congregations in the U.S. and Canada until retire-ment in 2000. At that time, she returned to art. She hosted a fig-ure program for 5+ years, taught

art classes, did commissions, par-ticipated in juried shows, and hosted nationally known artists’ workshops in oils, watercolor, colored pencil.

June’s President's Message:

My main message is that we are in serious need of volunteers for the Art Festival. This makes me question what it means to our members in general as this is are One source of in-come. Please consider committing to 2 to 4 hours to support the event!

May’s meeting was full of information on a number of shows, projects and activities. I can only keep track of all the things going on by getting them all on my calendar. Now I just have to re-member to check my calendar! Festival plans are coming together and we expect it to be a wonderful event. I hope all of you who have been screened will plan to enter the member’s show.

As many of you know Suzy Reynolds gave PAL a large number of art books that had belonged to her late father, Roger B. Molt. For those of you who wanted to express their thanks her email address is as follows; [email protected]. She also presented an opportunity to deco-rate little houses to be auctioned to raise funds for the Pierce County Housing Consortium. This looks like fun to me, so if you are interested please contact me for more information.

Once again we had a wonderful demo. Kathleen Kemly presented a very interesting mixed media technique that had us all wish the meeting could go on longer. By our next meeting I hope we will have a date for the summer picnic. Stay busy and have fun.

President.

MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

I try to create a culture of joy and sharing in the class. With 25

years of experience teaching drawing and painting to all ages

and levels, I constantly challenge myself to grow as an artist and

instructor. My goal is to help you develop the skills you need to

express your own passion with art. I emphasize process rather

than product, and believe the workshop setting is the place to try

new things and learn from each other

PAL - Teen Competition for Art Festival Poster

Design – 2015

The Gig Harbor Summer Art Festival is held down-

town Gig Harbor each year on the third weekend of

July. One of the most important aspects of the festi-

val is the design used for posters, T-shirts and publici-

ty and each year that design is the result of working

with local high-schools participating in our Poster

Contest.

PAL volunteer, Stephanie Cardinal, began building a

relationship with art teachers at GHHS, Peninsula

High, South Kitsap High, Henderson Bay and Harbor

Christian School last December. She began to com-

municate our requirements for festival art design and

spent classroom time brainstorming with graphic art

students and teachers. Slowly but surely, 31 art stu-

dents presented outstanding art for our contest this

year. We were so delighted with the quality of the

designs and the student enthusiasm for the project!

They were creative and exciting and the artwork was

of high quality and design. The 31 posters were voted

on by the board, taking into account how the design

would transfer to a poster and T-shirt. The numbers

were reduced to 7 posters which were presented to

the membership for a vote at the last meeting.

The result was: First Place – Raven Shipley from

GHHS; Second Place – Aubrey Lash from South

Kitsap; and Third Place – Maria O’Sullivan from South

Kitsap. There are monetary awards along with certifi-

cates and a cash award for the classroom teacher of

the First Place Winner. There is also the honor of see-

ing the art reproduced as a symbol of the 2015 Sum-

mer Art Festival. Many thanks to Stephanie Cardinal

for the time and effort she donated to making this

contest a great success and to all the students who

participated this year! By Myrna Binion

Wanted....artists to decorate tiny houses for affordable housing...... "When housing costs too much, people don't have enough to cover other basic needs. The Afforda-ble Housing Consortium aids in providing desirable, low cost homes for people who simply do not earn enough to pay for "market-rate" apartments. It gives people with low and moderate incomes safe and healthy places to live in our communities." This organization serves our community in many ways. To name a few: rent and utility assistance, emergency housing, housing the home-less, clean and sober housing, veterans resources and more. This October the Tacoma Pierce County Affordable Housing Consortium will hold it's 5th annual "Affordable Housing Awards Celebration and Silent Auction". The event will be held at the Foss Waterway Seaport on the Tacoma Waterfront. As a major portion of the auction they would like to feature small 3D kraft paper houses decorated by local artists. The houses can be decorated in any way that strikes your fancy......they may be modified, enlarged, beaded, painted, papered, simply or ornately embellished in any form. If you decide to participate in this project, you will receive your "house" in June and they will be collected in mid September. Please feel free to email or call me with any questions or to say that you would love to be part of this fun and worthwhile project. I'll be waiting to hear from you. Mirror, Mirror on the Wall..... Shared Housing Services' mission statement is dynamic, "connecting people and fostering inde-pendence through innovative and affordable housing because everyone needs a place to call home." Shared Housing Services serves all of Pierce County and matches homeless youth and adults with those who may have extra space in their homes. These matches are made only after extensive interviews and background checks. The next step is for both parties to decide between themselves if this will be an agreeable situation. Both the home seeker and the home provider can benefit in immeasurable ways. Each year we hold a dinner auction to raise funds to augment the grants that we receive. Our next Auction will be March 5, 2016. As a featured part of the auction we would like to showcase mirrors decorated by local artists. The mirrors will be approximately 18" x 24" and will have wooden frames. Should you decide to take on this project, you will have total freedom in turning this mirror into a fabulous work of art. You will receive your "canvas" in Oct and we would like to pick up the completed mirrors on Feb. 1. I hope this project sounds as fun to you as it does to me. Please call me with questions or to say "I'll do it!!!!!!" Suzy Reynolds Member of the Board Shared Housing Services. [email protected] 253 851 0593

PAL Board Meeting May 21, 2015

In attendance: Kate Griswold, Cathie Johnson, Hilaire Radowick, Bob Knapp, Carlene Salazar and Myrna Binion

Board Minutes were accepted as printed in the newsletter.

Treasurer Report: Bob Knapp, Treasurer sent a treasury report to Board Members via email. There was discussion of the

audit to be held on May 28th at Bob’s home. Aidan Fogarty has volunteered to assist in the annual audit and one more per-

son is needed to help with the process. Kate will ask for a volunteer at the general meeting.

Festival - Zappilation: Hilaire Radowick asked to represent PAL at this year’s Zappilation Conference to be held in Kansas

City next September. The costs would be roundtrip airfare, conference fees, food and lodging. There is a saving on the

conference fee with Early Bird savings with a June registration. There was discussion of the value of sending a representa-

tive again this year as our experience with Zappilation seems to be positive and the process is working well. Kate decided

to email the Board Members for a vote as this month’s attendance was low and she needed more input. This decision will

be made by email.

Festival Report – Hilaire reported that the art for this year’s festival has been completed and T-shirts, hats, posters and ad-

vertising are being ordered. She is pleased with the design and has hopes that the baseball style caps will be popular.

There will be two styles of T-shirts ordered – the regular crew neck and a V-neck style. Reception invitations will be availa-

ble soon and will be given to Key Bank for their customers. Hilaire said festival plans are on track and sign-up sheets will

be at the general meeting for completion. Plans for transporting and lifting equipment from the storage unit are not com-

plete. Hilaire plans to look into hiring a company to assist. Kate offered her opinion that occupants from Remann Hall

might be available as a resource. Her neighbor works with youth who are required to do community service – Kate will

check into that idea.

Book Donation: Kate said she has been contacted by a family owning a large number of Art Books which belonged to the

father who has deceased. The family would like to donate those books in his name to local artists. The books will be availa-

ble for free at the meeting.

Members Shows: Cathie Johnson discussed the upcoming PAL Members Show at Key Bank during the festival. Paintings

will again be delivered to the back door area of the bank at drop-off time. Sign-up sheets will be available at the meeting

for taking in the art and hanging the show as well as docent volunteers during the weekend. The reception plans are on

track with Mallard’s Landing, our sponsors for this year’s event. Cathie reported that plans sound wonderful with tasty

treats and wine all supplied by Mallard’s Landing.

Pleine Air – Starts May 28 at Skansie Netshed in Jersich Park downtown Gig Harbor. Communication will be by Blog this

year with Feather Hilger as the contact person.

Oar Event- The auction and dinner will be held at the Yacht Club on June 6. Tickets are $35.00 each and the dinner selec-

tions are salmon and chicken. There is a silent as well as verbal auction and the oars will be auctioned for the fundraiser

along with some other donated items.

GH Museum: Myrna Binion and Sandy Newhouse met with the new Director of the GH Museum, John Ross, to discuss our

continuing relationship between our organizations. John Ross was very positive about holding future art shows and events

at the museum and said the planned remodel next year might change the month of the PAL Open Show, but they still plan

to host it. The remodel is not huge – it is mainly creating an opening between two current rooms for glass doors which can

be opened for large events. John was open to the idea of holding the museum open after hours on the Thursday Art Walk

during the Open Show dates. Museum goers could see the show for free during those hours. PAL will host with some sort

of event – further plans must be developed.

Workshop- Dawn Emerson will be here for a workshop in September.

2016 Slate of Officers and Committee Chairs: There was discussion of which current members will remain in their posi-

tions. Kate will bring this up at the meeting. We need a President, possibly a First VP and Workshop Chair. Kate will talk

to others and see where they stand.

Meeting adjourned. Minutes taken by Myrna Binion, temporary fill-in secretary
