The Fredericton Arts Alliance is going through a time of reorganization and evaluation after losing its funding for staff support. The loss has meant that the Arts Alliance is not able, at this time, to carry out all its programs without interruption. Regrettably, we are unable to present the fall studio tour known as Art Trek for 2011. We hope this is a temporary lapse, and if artists or artist groups wish to organize a studio tour themselves, the FAA would be happy to lend our experience and suggestions to the project. - Katie FitzRandolph, President, FAA / [email protected] RO%%&>=""%!"#%"C>8D8;86!$%64"!%EF!"%GH%A;%IA@@"=J%KL%

Steven Rhude’s exhibition Suspension places ordinary objects in unordinary circumstances as he challenges his viewer to contemplate the condition of society and the world. The subjects, all familiar to a certain degree, are also slightly at an angle from real life. Mary White is Taken by the Sky in her large new oil paintings of landscapes that make the senses vibrate with her use of strong and vibrant colour palette. She also delights, once again, with her larger than life hand-built clay vases. Dana O’Regan enjoys his first solo exhibition at Gallery 78 with After they were built. O’Regan’s story-telling ability comes through in these narrative paintings of structures, cityscapes, and seascapes as they morph and change in and through their surroundings. Gallery 78 is located at 796 Queen St. (corner of Church and Queen), Fredericton. Hours are Tues to Fri 10am-5pm, Sat 10am-3pm, Sun 1-4pm. Snailhouse is the brainchild of Montreal based artist Mike Feuerstack. Gently knocking on the door of success for over 15 years now, Feuerstacks’ songs are timeless; instantly true and recognizable before they’ve even hit the chorus. Currently touring in Europe supporting the German release of the new album, Feuerstack and band will be heading back to Canada to begin release shows at home. Over the course of five albums and two EPs, Snailhouse has earned a very loyal following around the world and featured contributors as diverse and renowned as Julie Doiron, Dave Draves, Angela Desveaux, members of Arcade Fire, Wintersleep, Bell Orchestre, Maritime and The Acorn – to name a few. He is set to release his 6th full-length, Sentimental Gentleman, on May 24 in Canada through Forward Music and White Whale Records. Through the last twenty years of the 19th century, and the first two decades of the 20th, the manufacturing of glass was a unique enterprise in Canada. Beginning with the founding of the Nova Scotia Glass Company in 1881, the glass factories of Nova Scotia produced clear tableware at a time when it was not made anywhere else in Canada. Now, in the beautifully illustrated book Fragile and Fanciful: The Story of Nova Scotia Glass, featuring photographs of the highly collectable patterned tableware produced between 1881 and 1892, Deborah Trask examines the remarkable history of the glass industry in Nova Scotia during this golden age of pressed-glass production. Deborah Trask will visit Fredericton with Fragile and Fanciful on Saturday June 11, 2011 from 2:30-4pm, beginning with a public lecture by the author. The event will take place at the Provincial Archives of New Brunswick, 23 Dineen Drive, Fredericton, NB. Free parking is available. This event is free and open to the public. Books will be available for purchase and signing. Goose Lane Editions and the Nova Scotia Museum would like to thank the Canada Council for the Arts for their continued and ongoing support. Bricklin is BACK and taking to the road for another promotional tour! There is nothing like driving a classic car... especially when that car is safety orange with a V8 engine and gull-wing doors that open at the touch of a button. Don't miss your chance to see the star of The Bricklin: An Automotive Fantasy up close and personal before it hits the stage on July 22. The orange odyssey will be making appearances at Officer's Square on June 14, the Nashwaaksis Commons on June 15, Kings Landing on June 19, and the Fredericton High School Prom on June 20, just to name a few. You may even catch a glimpse of our star at Boyce Farmer's Market or the Cultural Expressions Festival, but keep your ear to the ground as the summer tourist season revs up! Beginning July 22, the Bricklin will make several appearances onstage during the course of the two-hour musical, which centres on New Brunswick's ill-fated venture into automotive manufacturing in the mid-1970s. During that time, the Richard Hatfield government and American promoter Malcolm Bricklin financed the Bricklin's manufacturing. The company crumbled in 1976, weighted down by design flaws and financial mismanagement. Fewer than 3,000 cars were produced from 1974 to 1976 and the province lost its entire investment in the Bricklin, to the tune of $23 million. This hit musical comedy is a joint effort between The Fredericton Playhouse and Theatre New Brunswick. It was commissioned by The Playhouse, written by Allen Cole and Paul Ledoux, and directed by Alisa Palmer. The Bricklin: An Automotive Fantasy runs from July 22-August 7. On June 10, the metalworkers move out of the Fredericton Arts Alliance studio at the Soldiers’ Barracks, opening up the space for a potter and a fibre artist for their week-long residency. Jasmine Cull, an instructor in fibre arts at the NB College of Craft and Design, plans to work with basketry during her residencey. Cull has a fine arts degree from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, and is a juried member of the craft councils in both New Brunswick and Newfoundland and Labrador. She will explore the spherical form in a variety of materials, experimenting with layering and embellishments. She works with reed and locally gathered materials. Christopher Colwell, a potter who studied ceramics at the NB College of Craft and Design from 1992 to 1995, and then did studio and production pottery until 2006, has been exploring the medium since. During his residency, he will create forms through hand building and wheel throwing for firing in a raku kiln later in the week. Jasmine and Chris will be at the studio until Friday, June 17, when metalsmith Brigitte Clavette and photographer Jeff Crawford move in. The Artist in Residence program is in its tenth year, and receives support from the City of Fredericton, Downtown Fredericton, sponsors St. Thomas University, Ingrid Mueller Arts+Concepts, Isaac’s Way Restaurant, Fellows & Co Architects and the members and supporters of the Fredericton Arts Alliance. The exhibition will span the Charlotte Glencross Gallery and the backyard Culture Garden. Formed in 2004, Emerge Artists Collective is a group of Fredericton-based visual artists working in various genres. Joss Richer, Oliver Flecknell, Pierre-Luc Arseneau, Mark Cameron, Carrie Lenentine, Adam Jones, Nancy Smith, and Rachel Greenwood explore exhibition potential within the city while also forming a creative community of like-minded emerging artists. The members of Emerge have developed their ’scape pieces in their own style, using a wide variety of materials and techniques for a non-traditional approach to creating landscape art. ‘scape will be Emerge’s 15th exhibition and their first exploring both indoor and outdoor spaces simultaneously. The exhibition opening will showcase improvised music by PLA & F-Hilo, a local electro-experimental duo, and is free to the public. ‘scape runs until July 31 and is an integral component of CSAC’s Garden and Gallery 2011 exhibition series.
