3. Fredericton Filmmaker Launches Crowdfunding Campaign for Documentary on the New Brunswick Museum The New Brunswick Museum (NBM) is pleased to announce that a new documentary film featuring the New Brunswick Museum’s BiotaNB bioblitz programme is now in the works. The film, entitled Every Living Thing – experiencing a bioblitz is being produced by Lloyd Salomone of Flower Power Production, a New Brunswick documentary filmmaker based in Fredericton. The film will be directed by Kent Martin, who has 35 years of experience making documentaries. The film will incorporate footage shot at the NBM’s Grand Lake Protected Natural Area Bioblitz in 2013 and 2014, as well as interviews with participants, which will document the purpose, process and value of this major, science-based, biological inventory programme. In part, funding for this film is being raised through a Crowdfunding campaign. The campaign, promoted in partnership with the Documentary Film Organization of Canada, has a goal to raise $25,000 by September 11, 2015. If successful, these funds will be matched by the Echo Foundation in Montreal, QC. The New Brunswick Museum is supporting this crowdfunding initiative through in-kind activities as well as a financial contribution of $2,000. Your financial and/or promotional assistance would be most appreciated. 7. NB Film Co-op’s Monday Night Film Series presents Amy (Sept 7) and I’ll See You in My Dreams (Sept 14) Amy September 7, 2015 7:30pm at Tilley Hall, UNB Campus Asif Kapadia, 128 mins, UK, 2015, English From BAFTA award-winning director Asif Kapadia (SENNA), Amy tells the incredible story of six-time Grammy-winner Amy Winehouse – in her own words. The documentary study of the great British soul queen Amy Winehouse, who died of alcohol poisoning at the age of 27, is stunningly moving and powerful: intimate, passionate, often shocking, and almost mesmerically absorbing. Featuring extensive unseen archive footage and previously unheard tracks, this strikingly modern, moving and vital film shines a light on the world we live in, in a way that very few can. I’ll See You in My Dreams September 14, 2015 7:30pm at Tilley Hall, UNB Campus Brett Haley, 92 mins USA, 2015, English Principal Cast: Blythe Danner, Sam Elliot, Mary Kay Place, Rhea Perlman, June Squibb Premiering at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, I’ll See You in My Dreams is a funny, touching, and romantic comedy-drama that follows a retired schoolteacher as she discovers new friendships, adventures and heartaches in her twilight years. A long-time widow and empty-nester, Carol Petersen (Blythe Danner, Sylvia, Meet the Parents) enjoys a pleasantly placid everyday routine of playing bridge with friends, tending her garden, watching TV and relaxing with a glass of wine. But when her beloved dog becomes ill and has to be put down, Carol is confronted with the loneliness at the core of her seemingly comfortable and tranquil life. With the help of her best friends — played by the stellar trio of June Squibb (Nebraska), Rhea Perlman and Mary Kay Place — Carol decides to embrace the world, embarking on an unlikely friendship with her young pool maintenance man (Martin Starr), pursuing a new love interest (Sam Elliott, Up in the Air), and reconnecting with her daughter (Malin Akerman, The Bang Bang Club). Taking advantage of a rare leading role, the marvellous Danner endows Carol with a lifetime’s worth of wisdom and experience, and her outstanding work is matched by the rest of the sterling supporting cast. Sensitive, nuanced and affectingly sincere, I’ll See You in My Dreams is a revelatory tale about love among the not-so-young. This year, 26 limited release, independent, foreign, and Canadian films will be shown. Admission is $7/film, but a yearly $18 student film society membership reduces admission cost to $4/film. The series is open to all. Memberships are available at Tilley 102 every Monday night. For further info, contact NB Film Co-op at 455-1632 or [email protected]. For more information visit: http://www.nbfilmcoop.com/exhibition/monday-night-film-series. 11. The UNB Art Centre presents Kim Vose Jones’ Sensorium & Ann Manuel’s The Worry Ladders Sept 11 The UNB Art Centre is pleased to welcome two distinguished New Brunswick artists to exhibit their work this fall. Kim Vose Jones and Ann Manuel will display two exciting new installations that focus on the human experiences of anxiety and worry. Please join us as we open these exhibits on September 11, 2015 from 5-7pm in Memorial Hall on the University of New Brunswick campus. In the East Gallery, Fredericton-based sculptor and installation artist Kim Vose Jones will create a multimedia installation entitled Sensorium. Video projection and sound will overlay sculptural representations of a fragile home in a stark landscape, mingled in continuous immersive flux between states of anxiety and calm. Inspired by the prolonged confinement of Ashley Smith and a meditation on imprisonment in general, this exhibition deals with the tensions inherent between shelter and confinement, absence and presence, protection and abandonment. Ann Manuel’s exhibition, The Worry Ladders, will be composed of five ladders, each nine feet tall, created using materials from New Brunswick’s forests. Drawing on our conception of the ladder of success, this installation represents five worries which reflect the artist’s understanding of environmental, economic, and political issues related to the sustainability and stewardship of our forests. The Worry Ladders will be on display in the West Gallery at Memorial Hall. Both Ms. Vose Jones and Ms. Manuel are accomplished professional artists. Ms. Vose Jones has exhibited her work internationally and holds an MFA in Studio Arts from the Maine College of Art. Ms. Manuel has exhibited throughout the Atlantic region as well as across Canada, and internationally, in Thailand and France. Ms. Manuel received her Master of Arts in Visual Art Education from the University of British Columbia. Sensorium and The Worry Ladders will be on display until October 30, 2015. The UNB Art Centre is located at Memorial Hall, 9 Bailey Drive, University of New Brunswick. The galleries are open 9am - 4pm on weekdays and for special events. Admission is free to members of the public. Everyone welcome! Back to top.

12. Cinema Politica presents Mars at Sunrise Sept 11 Cinema Politica Fredericton returns to screening films at Conserver House, located at 180 Saint John St. on Fridays at 7pm. It begins on September 11 with Mars at Sunrise, a stunning work of political fiction inspired by the real-life of a Palestinian artist. When Azzadeh, a young Jewish American poet, travels to Israel to see the land and people she has only ever heard about through the voices of others she uncovers stories of Israeli soldiers who reflect on the complexity of their military service; Palestinian families who are displaced and wedged between walls; and artists from both cultures who strive to paint a picture of life surrounded by conflict. While waiting at a checkpoint in Jenin, Azzadeh meets Khaled, a Palestinian painter forced from his home in East Jerusalem. The film is co-hosted with Fredericton Palestine Solidarity and Jews for a Just Peace Fredericton. Films are free. Donations are welcome. For more information or to view the trailer visit: http://www.cinemapolitica.org/film/mars-sunrise. Back to top.

13. Peggy Smith: Two Passions and William Robinson: Body Type open at Gallery 78 Sept 11 Peggy Smith has a knack for drawing you into her paintings. Although her art has gone through stylistic transformations over the years since her studies with Alex Colville, the subjects of landscape and music remain. When Peggy paints, her vivacity is transformed into the images of her work. Her intimate garden and landscape scenes have the ability to ground and move the viewer at the same time. Her paintings of music reveal the rise and fall of sound and one is at once transfixed, hearing the tune clearly, translating the visual back to the audible. There is a sense of harmony to her work and a symbiotic relationship between the garden scenes and the musical paintings; each one breathes life into the other. The gardens are melodious while her paintings of music borrow colours and forms from nature to be understood, to be heard. In 2012, a long held interest in jewellery design prompted William Robinson to enrol in the Jewelry/Metal Arts program at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design. His designs are inspired by the world around him, especially nature, architecture, and geometric patterns. During his career as a graphic designer, William worked with typography on a daily basis and learned to appreciate the design and intricate beauty of the many typestyles Using typography as the theme for this solo exhibition, Body Type, William incorporates his career as graphic designer/typographer with his current work as a jeweller and metal-smith. In 2014 William received the Governor General’s Award for academic excellence. This is his first solo exhibition at Gallery 78. Gallery 78 is located at 796 Queen St. on the corner of Church and Queen Streets. Open: Tuesday to Friday 10am-5pm, Saturday 10am-3pm, and Sunday 1-4pm or visit virtually at: www.gallery78.com. 16. Upcoming Events at the Fredericton Playhouse September 14, 8pm Sonic concerts presents Home Free When country vocal band Home Free was crowned champion of NBC’s The Sing-Off, their victory was by no means the beginnings of a career for the five country stars from Minnesota. Rather it was a satisfying culmination of nearly a decade of hard work and commitment to a vocal craft growing in popularity. They have become known for their high-energy performances, peppered with quick-witted humor that meshes Nashville standards with pop hits dipped in country flavor. September 15, 7:30pm Harvest Jazz & Blues Festival presents Opening Night Gala: Florence K Though rare, there are some artists who surprise us time and again by constantly revealing new facets of their immense talent. Florence K is one of these artists. Since the launch of Live At Lion D’Or in 2005, the renowned Montreal musician continues to surprise, amaze and fascinate. With her two beautiful albums, Bossa Blue released in 2006 and La Historia De Lola in 2008, both of which have won Félix Awards for World Music Album of the Year, or with Havana Angels, her gorgeous Christmas opus that was a huge smash just after its release in 2010, Florence has more than lived up to her billing as one of the most celebrated singers Quebec has to offer. Feel free to stop by to try it out for a week before making a commitment. For more information please contact Katherine Moller at [email protected] or at 440-3123. Back to top.

3. Artful Persuasion looking for New Artists Right in the heart of downtown Fredericton, you will find Artful Persuasion, a member run shop offering local artisans a home to sell their creations. Owned and operated by its members, Artful is always looking for new small crafters to round out our unique selection of handmade goods. We are a down-to-earth group that each dedicate approximately 2-3 days per month to help run the shop - much more manageable than owning a Downtown storefront on your own. A couple of areas that we are currently looking to branch out in are sweets (fudge, candy, jams/jellies, etc), small wood working, painted signs, weaving, functional pottery, natural body products, and wood turning, among others! If interested please visit us at www.artfulpersuasion.ca, email [email protected], or call us at 450-0464. Back to top.

6. Call for submissions for the 2015 New Brunswick Art Bank Acquisitions Program The New Brunswick Art Bank is now accepting submissions from visual artists in the province for the 2015 Acquisitions Program. The program buys contemporary works of art by New Brunswick visual artists for display in government buildings and for exhibition in the province and elsewhere. Every two years, a peer assessment panel of artists and art professionals selects artwork based on the acquisitions budget of $40,000. Artists who are Canadian citizens or landed immigrants who have resided in New Brunswick for 12 consecutive months prior to the application deadline and who pay personal income taxes in New Brunswick are eligible to apply for the program. Artwork must have been produced during the past two years and must be suitable for display in government buildings. The jury will review the applications and will announce the new acquisitions in December. The New Brunswick Art Bank is a permanent collection of more than 800 artworks. Collected since the 1960s, the art bank serves as a record of excellence in the visual arts in New Brunswick. The deadline to receive submissions is October 2, 2015.
