Federal budget eliminates welfare for political parties, follows 501 blueprint FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE OTTAWA (June 6, 2011) – The National Citizens Coalition (NCC) expressed cautious optimism today with the release of the federal budget. "We have been keeping pressure on the federal government to live up to their campaign promises in this budget, and the early signs suggest they are slowly moving in the right direction," says Peter Coleman, President and CEO of the NCC. This budget will phase out and eliminate the $2-per vote annual subsidy that federal political parties have become accustomed to – hich will save taxpayers nearly $27-million each year once implemented. Taxpayers are now waiting for the government to eliminate additional tax breaks for political parties and to end the suppression of individuals' freedom of speech by removing the caps on political donations. "This is something Canadians want to see – and we are encouraged to see this majority government beginning to respond to these concerns with its first budget," adds Coleman. With a complete review of more than $80-billion in federal spending, taxpayers may have good reason to be optimistic about this budget.
