    "SCARS"

If you are concerned about the environment

all, even the excitement of building a new hous

can be a bit traumatic. Despite the joy of usin

the backhoe to do a fair bit of the excavation, the short term resul

are frankly pretty ugly and don't leave a particularly proud feeling o

accomplishment. Since we couldn't afford to build with landscapinincluded, a year ago the new house looked forlorn sitting among

the dirt and debris of construction destruction. But, within a singl

year, the place is already perking up with day lilies and roses, lilac

and blueberries, raspberries and shrubs, all starting to quickly eras

some of the worst of the environmental destruction.

I am currently in the process of building the world's largest bridg

located in the back woods of Nauwigewauk and again I am

confronted with environmental use versus environment

destruction. In order to harvest one forty foot tree, it is no

uncommon for three or four smaller trees to be damaged as the larg

one crashes to the ground. Now, none of the trees are simply left t

rot as I will use virtually all of it for firewood or some other purposbut you still end up replacing a tall standing tree with a pile of brus

that doesn't look nearly as attractive.

So what is the solution?? Using Mother Nature is not an option

Without land for agriculture, we would starve and without wood fo

paper and building material, we would be bookless and homeles

While the use of Mother Nature can be ugly on the short term, if w

continue to use but not abuse Mother Nature, she has a tremendou

    capacity to heal herself!!!

On the other hand there are numerous activities that we ca

undertake that even good old Mother Nature can never repair. A lon

section of brook runs through our property and over the years it ha

accumulated a large amount of sediment that has definitely affectethe long term quality of the brook and not in a good way.

In between starting and finishing this Raving, I was sitting abou

and happened to glance at my arms and noticed several scar

Intrigued I explored further, going from the elbows to finger tips

My search revealed probably a dozen or more scars that can be see

but aren't highly visible with casual observation. So that's how w

need to treat Mother Nature ... mildly scarred but still really goo

looking!! Hey ... When you are as old as dirt ... you are qualified t

know what Mother Nature does and doesn't like. 800

    Declaring rights and things

As you may be aware, when an individual dies, a final personal income tax return isrequired to be filed by the executor on behalf of the deceased. This final income tax returnis also known as a terminal tax return. The terminal tax return generally includes taxableincome earned by the deceased from January 1 of the year of death up to their date of death.

Note that personal tax credits such as the basic tax exemption, spousal exemption and agecredit are not prorated on the terminal tax return for the number of days an individual wasliving in their year of death.

In addition to reporting income received on the terminal tax return, an executor has theoption of including certain types of taxable income of the deceased on a separate tax returncalled a rights and things return. Generally income that was owing but unpaid as of thedate of death is considered as a rights and things. Common types of income that may beconsidered as rights and things are:

Old Age Security benefits that were due and payable before the date of death; uncashedmatured bond coupons; bond interest earned to a payment date before death, but not paidand not reported in previous years; unpaid dividends declared before the date of death;supplies on hand, inventory, and accounts receivable if the deceased was a farmer orfisherman and used the cash method; livestock that is not part of the basic herd andharvested farm crops, if the deceased was using the cash method; and work in progress, ifthe deceased was a sole proprietor and a professional who had elected to exclude work inprogress when calculating his or her total income.

The two main benefits of declaring income considered as rights and things on a separatetax return are the following:

Double use of personal tax credits the terminal tax return and the rights and thingsreturn both allow use of some of the personal tax credits such as the basic tax exemption, spousal exemption and age credit. For example, if in their final year the deceased hadregular taxable income and income considered as right and things, the estate can doubledip and earn income up to the basic Tax Exemption Limit, tax-free on both tax returns.

Double use of an individuals low tax rate since the rights and things return is taxedas a separate person at graduated tax rates, the lowest tax rate can be used twice (terminaltax return and rights and things return) to minimize the estates tax liability.

As an alternative, if the rights and things income is transferred to a beneficiary withinone year of death or 90 days after assessment of the terminal tax return (whichever is later),then the rights and things income can be included on the tax return of the beneficiaryrather than the rights and things return. If you have any questions or require clarificationof any of the issues discussed in this document, do not hesitate to discuss these with youradvisor.

We are currently disposing of surplus equipment that maystill be useful to others in the not-for-profit sector.

We have approximately 12 computers ranging from fairlycapable work stations down to some best used for internetand basic word processing. Two or 3 machines are bestused as a teaching tool about the inner workings of a

computer - pretty obsolete otherwise. Virtually all machinesare licensed for Windows 2000 but the majority wouldhandle Windows XP with no problem.

In addition we have eight 17" CRT monitors, which are thebig heavy ones. We also have two fairly large laserprinters, one I believe works fine but the other needs a newfuser if memory serves me correctly. Also two faxmachines which send and receive fine but may or may nothave printing issues.

If your not-for-profit group has a need for this equipmentwe are happy to donate it. Email me at

or call me at 832-5613 (I am normally in Monday andWednesday mornings and Friday all day).

KEEP KIDS SAFE - ON THELOOK OUT

Sarah Blades, BScHP Health Promotion Specialist -Child Safety Link

It's amazing the things you find in your basement or storage when youdecide to clean things out. Would you re-discover the car seat you usedwhen your 11 year old was an infant? Could you find a baby walkerwith wheels that has been passed along in your family for almost 20years?

When going through your old household items, Child Safety Link

would like to remind you that some things found in the home can bevery dangerous to children. The Consumer Product Safety division ofHealth Canada is responsible for the careful regulation and use of itemsthat are available to Canadians. For example, we can thank ConsumerProduct Safety and Health Canada for the national ban on baby walkerswith wheels. Since April of 2004, it has been illegal to import, buy orsell a baby walker with wheels. Did you know that when walkers withwheels were available in Canada, more than 500 babies using walkerswere injured every year? That's more than three babies every day.

Other infant products such as baby bath seats or bathtub rings andaccordion style baby gates are very dangerous to young children. Babybath seats and rings sometimes give parents a false sense of security. They feel that their baby would be supported upright in the tub if theyran to answer the phone or grab a towel from an upstairs closet. If thebaby slips under or tries to climb out of the ring, they could becometrapped under water. A child can drown in as little as two inches ofwater, and in a very short amount of time. Accordion style baby gatesare dangerous because their openings are large enough for a child'shead to be trapped, and can cause strangulation.

If you find expired car seats, accordion baby gates or baby walkerswith wheels in your home, Child Safety Link recommends that youdestroy these items and place them at the curb for garbage pickup. Cut

the straps and padding and break the shell of old car seats and cut thseat, remove the wheels and break the tray of old baby walkerDismantle old accordion style gates with a saw or a wrench if there arbolts. Consider putting the pieces in separate dark garbage bags so thapassers-by won't be tempted to reuse these items in their own homes.

CELEBRATE RED, WHITE & SAFETY ON CANADA DAYRed and white, fireworks and barbecues are only a few of the things

stthat come to mind when you think about Canada Day. This July 1 ,Allstate Insurance wants you to celebrate Canadas birthday safely.

On Canada Day many Canadians gather with friends and familyand celebrate the occasion with fun festivities that often include afireworks display, says Amy Woods of Allstate Insurance Companyof Canada. But it is important to remember that a responsible partyhost or guest takes the time to safely prepare their fireworks displayand ensures no one drives home impaired.

To make sure you have a safe Canada Day celebration, Allstate has

developed tips on how to safely handle fireworks and do your part tokeep impaired drivers off the road. Make sure your fireworks displaysare safe by following these ten tips: 1. Read the instructions. Eachfirework device has different cautions, warnings and instructions.Make sure you read each package; 2. Check the wind direction. Set upfor your fireworks display so the wind is blowing away fromspectators, buildings and trees; 3. Keep back. Spectators should be atleast 8 metres away from the fireworks display. Ensure all children aresupervised; 4. Smart set up. Fireworks should only be lit outdoors, inan open space away from trees. Fireworks should be lit on a hard, level surface; 5. Be prepared. Have a bucket of sand, supply of waterand a fire extinguisher readily available; 6. Sparkle safely. Sparklersmay seem like harmless fun; however they can reach temperatures of650C. They also remain very hot after burning; once done, theyshould be immersed in a bucket of sand or water; 7. Age appropriate.Only adults should handle and light fireworks. Children 10 to 14 yearsof age sustain 42% of the injuries associated with fireworks; 8. One ata time. Fireworks should only be lit one at a time. Special effectsshould be left to professionals; 9. Dont relight. If a firework isdefective, dont attempt to relight it; 10. Have fun!

Impaired drivers put everyone on the road at risk. Remember thesesix tips from Allstate to make your drive home a safe one: 1. Don'tdrink and drive. If you know you will be drinking alcohol, have adesignated driver, call a cab or use public transportation; 2. Keep youreyes open. If you spot an impaired driver on the highway, maintain asafe distance and don't attempt to pass; 3. Report a suspected drunkdriver immediately. Call local law enforcement from your cell phone,

after pulling over safely, or from a pay phone. Give police as muchinformation as possible - for example: license plate number, make, model and color of vehicle, and the direction the vehicle is traveling;4. Be responsible. When entertaining your guests drink in moderation. It will be much easier to determine whether or not a guest is able todrive if you are sober; 5. Arrive alive. If your guests drink too much, arrange a ride with a sober driver, call a cab or insist they sleep at yourhome; 6. Be a great host. When hosting a party offer plenty of non-alcoholic beverages and serve food to help slow the absorption ofalcohol. Stop serving alcohol at least one hour before the party is overand never pressure others to drink or rush to refill their glasses whenempty. 918

    CANADADAY

    2010st

Canada Day is July 1 of every year. It's the day that allCanadians enjoy relaxation while spending time with family &friends. It typically involves a BBQ (cook-out). Manycommunities host Canada Day events and set off fireworks.

The Americans separated from British rule in 1776, andth

celebrate Independence Day on July 4 . Canada waited 100years later, until 1867, to create the "Dominion of Canada".Independence Day celebrates the rejection of British rule andthe United States becoming an autonomous country. The

basis of Canada's celebration is founded on the formation of anew country and the union of provinces. The holiday became a statute in 1879 but was initially called

Dominion Day. There are not any records of earlycelebrations of Canada (Dominion) Day, except for two years.

thIn 1917, it was used to commemorate the 50 anniversary ofConfederation. It was also a backdrop to the dedication of theParliament Buildings Centre Block which was beingconstructed. It was dedicated to the Fathers of Confederationand to Canadians fighting in the First World War.In 1927 the celebration coincided with the Diamond Jubilee

of Confederation. The Governor General laid the cornerstoneof the Confederation Building on Wellington Street and theCarillon in the Peace Tower was inaugurated.

Only since the late 1950's has Canada had regularobservance ceremonies of Canada Day.

In 1968, Canada added multi-cultural and professionalconcerts on Parliament Hill. The festivities were televised andran under the name Festival Canada until 1979.In 1980, the government extended celebrations beyond the

Ottawa region by sponsoring the development of festivitieson a local level. In 1981, 15 major cities offered fireworks tocommemorate the day.

It wasn't until 1982 that Dominion Day was officiallychanged to Canada Day.

    Sussex Herald - June 29, 2010

With the July long weekend and summer driving coming up,there is an opportunity to let go of some stress and havesome fun. But before you engage in your own stress release, this is a good time to de-stress your vehicle.

Like dominos falling down, failing to maintain your car canturn small problems into larger ones, putting a serious dentin your automotive budget and causing emotional andfinancial stress as well as lost time.

    Keep it Filled:

Nothing spoils the party like an empty gas tank. Alwaysmake sure the fuel gauge never dips below one-quarter.

    Keep it Clean:

A daily trip to work can be pretty stressful in a cluttered car.Add in the kids, the snacks and the luggage and it can bedownright scary. Keeping the car clean is as simple as

always these tips:1. Have a home for loose change

    2. Buy a snap on trash bag for your car, or even have a stashof plastic bags

    3. Keep the glove box, lean and clean

4.Have baby wipes and kleenex available for quick cleaning

    5. Change the car air freshener once a month

    6. Take something inside the house every time you leave thecar

    Car Cleaning Group Effort

For those who have their hands full all the time, perhapsnumber six (above) wont work. For this, it is recommendedthat you pick a time once a week (and certainly before a trip)and devote ten minutes to do a quick sweep of your car so itdoes not become an overhaul much later on. Doing this as afamily is a great way for kids to take some responsibility andearn their allowance (perhaps they can even find theirallowance in the form of loose change).

Keep it Together (Remember the essentials with a checklistand all documents).

One major stressor is having to turn around and go homefor forgotten items. Always create a list with essentials andensure you have an up-to-date license, insurance,

ownership and license plates and ensure you have contactinformation for your auto-club membership.

    Driven to Distraction:

There are many temptations that should be avoided toensure stress-free and safe driving. Here is a list of things toavoid:

Cellphones are Illegal in some provinces if youre not handsfree. That being said, several recent reports suggest thatBluetooth devices are no safer than handheld phonesbecause it's the distraction of the conversation that presentsthe danger.
