Prayer for Hurricane Season

O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed your order

and returned to its former quietude. You are still the Master of land and sea. We live the shadow of a danger over which we have no control: the gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awake from its seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land and spread chaos and disaster. Dur-ing this hurricane season we turn to you, loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with the passing of time. O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our Beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with you Son in our behalf, so that spared from the calam-ities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of grat-itude, we will walk in the footsteps of your divine Son to reach heavenly Jerusalem where a stormless eternity awaits us. Amen. Bishop Maurice Shexnayder

From the Pastor’s Desk

This past Thursday, Pope Francis was continuing his catechesis for the Holy Year of Mercy at the General Audience. In particular, he was speaking of Jesus’ healing of the leper in Luke 5:12-14. There we read:

“Now there was a man full of leprosy in one of the towns where he was; and when he saw Jesus, he fell pros-trate, pleaded with him, and said, “Lord, if you wish, you can make me clean.” Jesus stretched out his hand, touched him, and said, “I do will it. Be made clean.” And the leprosy left him immediately. “

Francis recalled that at Jesus’ time, lepers were considered unclean and bound by law to avoid contact with others. Saint Luke tells of one leper, moved by faith, who did not fear to pass among the crowds and beg Je-sus to cleanse him. “All that this man does and says, [this man] who was considered impure, is an expression of his faith!” Francis said, noting he recognizes the power of Jesus, certain of His power to cure him.

“The leper’s supplication,” the Pope explained, “shows that when we present ourselves to Jesus, long speeches are not necessary. A few words suffice, though accompanied by full confidence in His omnipotence and in His goodness. In fact, to entrust ourselves to the will of God means to submit to His infinite mercy.”

The Pope then departed from his text, saying he wanted to share something personal with those present. “In the evening, before going to bed, I pray this brief prayer: ‘Lord, if you will, you can cleanse me!’ And I pray five ‘Our Fathers,’ one for each wound of Jesus, because Jesus has purified us with His wounds.”

“But if I do this, you can also do it at home,” Francis encouraged, telling them to say: ‘Lord, if you will, you can cleanse me!’ As one does this, Francis said, “Think of Jesus’ wounds and say an Our Father for each one of them, for Jesus always listens to us.”

“Lord, if you will, you can cleanse me.” Powerful words, because they speak a fundamental truth about all of us. As a daily prayer, these words remind us of our ongoing need for cleansing, for healing. Perhaps we’re feel-ing like the leper, outcast and rejected, or just unworthy in some way. Or perhaps we’re feeling confident and assured. Either way, the prayer speaks to that fundamental truth about us, and about the desire of Jesus to heal us, if we can manage to let him.

Why five ‘Our Fathers’? Perhaps because the repetition of the prayer which Jesus himself gives us is just a way of sitting with the prayer, sitting in our need, resting comfortably with Jesus, who is the gentle healer. It’s a simple way of just showing up, and letting Jesus touch us, as he wills.
