Dear Mayfield Friends,
On Monday after Easter, Lynelle and I took a drive over to the West Side for a walk. We stopped at Lakewood Park to stroll along the (new in 2006) Lake-front Promenade with its spectacular view of the Cleveland skyline and its unique “Solstice Steps” that provide a wonderful setting for watching evening sunsets over Lake Erie.
We also took a walk along Edgewater Park where we found one of the six “Cleveland Script” signs overlooking the lake and the Cleveland skyline. Start-ed in 2016 as a part of the “Destination Cleveland” efforts to rekindle pride in our community, the other signs can be found in Tremont near the new I-90 overpass, Euclid Beach Park, North Coast Harbor, Cleveland Hopkins Interna-tional Airport baggage claim area, and most recently at The Foundry on the West Bank of the Flats. What beautiful views of the city!
These signs follow the May 2016 30/30 ESPN documentary by Cleveland na-tive Andy Billings, whose “Believeland” video captured the 50+ years of frus-tration for Cleveland sports fans who so often saw our beloved Cleveland teams come so close to a championship only to see hopes crumble with The Catch, The Decision, The Fumble, The Shot, The Drive, The Trade, The Move, the Rain of Threes. Then, little more than a month later with high drama and LeBron James triple-double heroism, the Cavs beat the Warriors for the NBA Championship, the only NBA team to come back from 1-3 to win the champi-onship series. The “Believeland” miracle came true and 1.3 million fans cele-brated on The Mall. Wow!

“I Believe.” When we of the Christian faith say, “I Believe,” it is more than a hope and a dream and a fantasy. “Because of Sunday,” it is real and it is foundational to profess our faith this way. When Jesus arrived in Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha, he found that their brother Laza-rus had already been in the tomb for four days. To the grieving Martha Jesus said, “ I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” Martha said to Jesus, “Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one coming into the world” (John 11:25-27).
In one of the more stunning miracles, Jesus said to grieving and wavering Martha, “Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?” Then Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” He did, still bound with strips of cloth as was the custom, and Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”
In our profession of faith we say, “I believe,” and we become “Believers.” In The Apostles’ Creed we say, “I believe in God the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son our Lord … I believe in the Holy Spirit …” In our Welcome! booklet and on our website, we find “Our Beliefs” – the core of who we are as described in our “Theological Be-liefs” and “Lifestyle Beliefs.”
Because of Sunday and the Empty Tomb, together we can say, “Yes, Lord, I believe you are the resurrection and the life. I believe you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the One coming into the world.” I pray that we will find ways to “Offer Christ” to many others so they too will say, “I believe!”

Holy Week at Mayfield
Thanks to all who helped make the Early Christian Meal, our worship experience on Good Friday, a success. Where did the idea for the Early Christian Meal come from? Credit Donna Gerber, who passes along her WorshipArts magazines to Pastor Jan. Jan noticed a small item in the May/June 2018 magazine about the dinner/drama at First United Meth-odist Church in Hickory, N.C. Jan contacted Rhonda Smith, who wrote the item, and Rhonda directed Jan to Kimberlee Dodson, the author of the book The Early Christian Meal. Again, thank you to all who made the evening special.

Our students at Rowland and Adrian Schools enjoyed their spring-break snack bags that our congregation delivered in March, and they wrote thank-you notes to our congregation.

May is a busy month at our partner schools. Here are some upcoming events: April 29 - May 1: State Testing (Math) for Rowland Third-Graders. To celebrate the end of the testing, Mayfield Church will provide a certifi-cate for an East Coast Custard ice cream cone to each third-grader. May 16: Rowland PTA’s End-of-School Cookout. To volunteer, stop by the school (back playground) at 6:30. We’ll hand out hot dogs and con-diments to our students and their parents while deejay Jim Rios gets everyone up and dancing! May 29: Last Day of School for Rowland and Adrian Students. May 30: Last Day of School for Teachers. The East Coast Custard Truck will visit Rowland at lunchtime, so our teachers and staff will have a treat (ice cream cone) from Mayfield Church.

Recognition Ceremony on April 24.
Please keep Cathy Stang in your prayers. Cathy is the learning resource teacher at Adrian School, and she oversees the book program at the school. Cathy was to have knee replacement surgery on April 26. We
wish her a speedy recovery!

The National Alliance on Mental Illness is America’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to improving the lives of individuals and families affected by mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, schizophre-nia, bipolar disorder and so much more. Founded in 1979, NAMI has become the nation’s voice on mental illness. This national organization, including both state and local affiliates, covers over 1,200 communities across the country and join together to meet the NAMI mission through advocacy, support and education. NAMI Geauga County was founded in 2007 by a group of individuals driven by family experience to make a difference in the mental health community. Vic and Sally Matthews were one of these founding families. NAMI Geauga has grown by leaps and bounds over the years to the point of having to relocate for more space. With this new space, we are now able to hold more education classes, support groups for peers and families struggling on the road to recov-ery, and help fight the stigma surrounding mental illness. NAMI Geauga County is a non-profit organization offering programs at no cost to participants. Without the generosity of federal, state, local funding and do-nations, NAMI Geauga would not be what it is today. Please join us Sunday, May 19, for a delicious breakfast. All proceeds will support NAMI Geauga continue offering these life changing programs.

Stephen Ministry We have exciting news! There will be a training program for new Ste-phen Ministers beginning mid to late June.
Let’s take a step back. Stephen Ministers are laypersons trained to pro-vide confidential one-to-one Christ-centered care to people who are hurt-ing. Stephen Ministers have a compassionate heart and spiritual gifts such as faith, mercy, and encouragement. They complete a training course which equips them with specific ministry skills. Stephen Minis-ters typically serve one care receiver at a time, meeting with that person once a week to listen, care, pray, encourage, and offer emotional and spiritual support as long as the need persists. They also meet with other Stephen Ministers 1-2 times per month to receive supervision: support and guidance for themselves.
Although the training to become a Stephen Minister involves a commit-ment of 50 hours, participants find it to be comprehensive, meaningful, well-organized, spiritual, and fun. The ministers feel that the training also gives them new insights and skills applicable to their everyday lives.
Mayfield Church’s Stephen Leaders provided training to a group of new ministers in the spring of 2018 and do not plan to conduct another train-ing here until 2020, perhaps. However, Chardon United Methodist Church is beginning a Stephen Ministry program and will start their train-ing in June. People from Mayfield Church who would like to become Stephen Ministers are invited to attend the Chardon training to be-come a Stephen Minister. There will be an informational meeting on Tuesday, May 21 at 6:30 PM at Chardon United Methodist Church, 515 North St, Chardon, which will further explain Stephen Ministry and the training.
Also, if you would like to learn more about becoming a Stephen Minister, feel free to contact any of our current Stephen Ministers: Dave Welty, Sally Matthews, Joyce Gordon, Cyndi Nicholson, D’Juana Arendt, Joy Clason, Jeff Kole, Kathy Rolla, Jeep Vernon, Edna Johnson, Joyce Lambert, Beth Clark Welty, Laurie Dye, Elizabeth Kitchen, or Ju-dy Stroup.

Red Cross Blood Drive
The Red Cross recognized Mayfield Church and our
commitment to helping oth-ers by hosting blood drives.
This past month, they were able to collect enough blood to help 60 people. Yay God!
A BIG thank you to all the women who crocheted and knitted our prayer squares. We brought 40 squares to our Saturday Easter Service at Mapleview Nursing Home and they were very much ap-preciated. You helped bring Christ to a community of very special people and put smiles on faces. They will continue

Heartland Childcare Center
“You are good and what you do is good.” Psalm 119:68 This has been a year of growth for Heartland in many ways. We have grown in the knowledge of God’s love for us and for each other. We have grown academically through the many different themes we’ve studied. We have grown socially with the many friendships that have developed. We have new faces joining us and old faces returning this summer. God has blessed us beyond belief and for that we give Him thanks. During the month of May, the children will use the colors of the rainbow to paint beautiful spring pictures. They will learn about the seeds and the trees that God so graciously created for us to enjoy. They will learn more about spring weather, whether it be rainy, sunny, or stormy, and the fact that God is with us throughout it all. We will end the year learning about God’s creations that roam the earth and also live at the zoo. As we prepare for the end of the year, we say congratulations to our stu-dents for their achievements and successes. To our 28 graduating Good Samaritans, we pray the Lord will go with you and watch over you throughout your future school years. Know that we are praying for you and cheering you on to success. Heartland will end the year with our Spring program, “Heartland Hoe-down,” on Tuesday, May 28, at 5 PM. Our Good Samaritan class will be graduating during the ceremony as well. Please feel free to join us! The end of the school year also means it’s almost time for Summer Camp 2019, “Toy Bible Story!” We’ll connect your favorite characters with Bible stories in a very unique way. Say “Good-bye” to Our Puddles!
Yes, we know the parking lot is in terrible shape. But help is on the way!
The Vision Committee, the Trustees and the Finance Committee have collaborated to contract with Infinity Paving Company
to completely repair and repave the parking lot and driveways starting Monday, May 20!
The paving and striping are expected to take between two and three weeks, depending on the weather. Infinity will take pains to make sure the work will be done in sections so you won't be too inconvenienced as it proceeds. We will communicate as fully as possible with the congrega-tion regarding what sections of the drives and parking areas will be usa-ble as the project continues.
As for the potholes, we elected not to spend a lot of money patching this year, because it will all be moot in a couple of months. So please drive slowly and carefully, be patient, and we will have a perfect new lot as soon as possible!
