Banns I - Steve Fechter & Kelly Schuh

Rosary: 7:00 p.m. on Wednesdays in Little Kohler Thank you to everyone who helped make the Corpus Christi Procession at St. Nicholas a success. Special thanks to Gary Feider, Pam Huiras, Shirley & Paul Birenbaum, Bev Jacoby, the Clara Weyker Family, the Peter Feider Family, the Bonnie Dahm Family and the Lor Xiong Family. Thank you all and anyone who may have been forgotten. Thank you! Please remember if you or an immediate family member is hospitalized and you’d like the parish to know about it, you should call the parish office. The privacy laws make it very difficult for us to know if someone is in the hospital. Even if someone at the hospital says they will notify your parish, they don’t always do so.

SAINTLY FOOD FOR THOUGHT

St. Josemaria Escriva, Feast Day June 26

“Understand this well: there is something holy, something divine hidden in the most ordinary situations, and it is up to each one of you to discover it.”

Many times, as adults, we go throughout our day just wishing it away, waiting for this or that to be over with. That sense of wonder we had as children has since faded and our days can often become monotonous. What used to captivate us as children has just become commonplace. I think the reason many of us go on vacation, especially a trip to a far off land is because we need something to reinvigorate our lives, to bring back that sense of wonder. While a vacation is a much needed reprieve from our everyday routine, wouldn’t it be even better if we were able to see the beauty and presence of God in the most ordinary situations of our everyday life? We know that God is always present to us, though we may sense his presence more on that vacation to a far off paradise than in the hours we spend at work. Since a vacation comprises a small percentage of our life and many of us don’t have the luxury to spend an hour in prayer each day, perhaps, an excellent prayer that we can engage in at any point in our day would be to examine how God has been present to us in each moment of our day, especially in those where he seemed most distant. In this way, each moment can be seen as an opportunity to discover God instead of a reminder of the monotony of our lives. Scriptures: Jer. :10-13; Rom. 5:12-15; Matt. 10: 26-33

I imagine most of us could relate a little to what Jeremiah is feeling in today’s first reading. Most of us have had times in our lives when life seems to be falling apart and it appears that everyone is against us…or at least not paying attention to the struggles we are facing. It is clear that Jeremiah is feeling a great deal of doom and despair. “Terror on every side.” He feels like all his friends have turned on him. Jeremiah is certainly not the only Scriptural figure who expresses these types of feelings. Remember Moses when the people turn on him in the desert and he thinks they are going to kill him? And what of Isaac, whose own father almost sacrifices him? Many of the psalms written by King David begin this same way. What of Jesus’ disciples after he is crucified and even after his rises from the dead? They remain locked away in the upper room for a long time out of fear of what could happen to them. And speaking of Jesus…well, we certainly know what people did to him! As we continue in this passage from Jeremiah, we notice that the middle part is a prayer to God. He expresses confidence that the Lord is with him. He prays to God and entrusts his “cause” to God. Sound familiar? All of these other characters listed above do the same. And how often do we do that as well? Jeremiah moves immediately from entrusting his cause to God into an attitude of praise to God. It appears there has been a somewhat immediate resolution to Jeremiah’s woes. Sometimes, there are skipped verses when we read from Scriptures at Mass, but this is a contiguous passage. Jeremiah is rescued immediately… or is he? Perhaps the fact that he trusts in God and places his concerns in God’s hands is enough to immediately change Jeremiah’s perspective. It could be that he no longer feels completely abandoned because he feels God’s presence. Either way, Jeremiah’s perception of reality has changed. He is not alone. God is with him. Let us remember that when we feel abandoned and betrayed (even by those we deeply love), God never abandons us. If we can keep the love of our God in our hearts, we will always know someone cares.

The mission of Divine Savior Parish is to use all the means God has given us to be a life-giving example of Christ’s love in our

community and beyond. In cooperation with the global Catholic Church and the

Archdiocese of Milwaukee, we accomplish this through prayer, frequent celebration

of the Sacraments, especially the Eucharist, study and sharing of our faith,

service to all, and by providing our children with Catholic roots deeply embedded in

faith in God.

The mission of Divine Savior Catholic School is to provide an environment for

children to excel personally, academically and spiritually. Together we share in the

mission of Divine Savior Parish to foster a faith-filled community where Catholic

values are learned through prayer, service and love. Our goal is to use these values

to develop lifelong learners and compassionate leaders.

The mission of Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Congregation is to be a life-giving sign of Christ’s love, justice, and peace in our area of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, through the celebration of the sacraments,

especially the Eucharist, community prayer, spiritual reflection, and a commitment of

service to God’s people.
