From Your Governor
I had the time of my life…just like the song goes, this has been a fantastic year for me! This was only possible because of the completely awesome Lions we have in District 1-D! I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know so many of you great Lions and Club visits were a definite highlight of this year. You made being a District Governor very easy. Thank you, Lions, for all you did this year. I know there was a lot thrown at you and you persevered and made it through leaving things a bit better than when you started. Please continue with your outstanding service. Lions are doing extraordinary things! Take advantage of the various learning opportunities LCI is providing its Lions. Our District needs leaders! There are so many oppor-tunities within leadership that I encourage you to check it out and see where you may fit in. Embrace change and try something new. Even if it doesn’t work, at least you tried! If it does work then perhaps you have found something bigger and better that will be hugely successful! I’m sure as the phone, car, or airplane was being invented and tested, there were neigh-sayers and jokes made but where would be today without these inventions? Keep reaching out to add more Lions to your Club’s membership. This organization will only get better and impact more if we do this! When I think about Lions’ membership, I go back to the sign in my dentist’s office that says “You don’t have to brush all of your teeth. Just the ones you want to keep.” This is the same thought we should have regarding our members. We don’t have to reach out to all of our

membership and keep them all involved – just the ones we want to keep. So, shouldn’t we really be taking care of all of them by reaching out and keeping all involved? Another bright area in reviewing this past year was the Council of Governors I was fortunate to be a part of. For a number of years, there have been buttons made up with tongue-in-cheeks jokes with hidden meanings such as the 1st Vice District Governor’s who read “Next year, it will all be my fault” or Past District Governor’s who read “It’s no longer my fault”. Early in the year, the Council came up with a button that said, “We don’t care who’s fault it is – Let’s Fix It!” My Council was faced with some issues and tough deci-sions to make this past year but we did our best with the information we were provided. It wasn’t all fun; however, working with this Council of Governors has been fun and I have made some life-long friends. Overall, they made being a District Governor easy. This year, I have been working closely with District Governor Elect Richard Delp. We have talked almost daily this past year and he has been included in a lot of the decisions that have been made. I welcome him into the position of District Governor for 2019-20 and ask that each of you do the same. I am looking to returning to the Orangeville Lions Club and having the time to do more with them. I want to thank those Lions for their understanding in my absences and the support they have shown me over the past several years. The next time you may see me, I will be a Past District Governor (PDG) which I will embrace. This means I will have moved on to an advisory role which I am also anticipating will be a great experience. If I am able to offer you or your Club any assistance, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. Again, THANK YOU LIONS for your service to helping those in need! Your impact is enormous! Keep ROARing,

District Governor Elect Richard Delp
June is here and with it the induction of officers for the new Li-ons’ year. I’d like to thank everyone who gave their condolences when my mother-in-law passed away. It was appreciated by the whole family. Friendly reminder, that there is Officer Training in Oregon on June 17th starting at 6pm, and then another training on the 24th in Lanark, also starting at 6pm. Please plan on attending one of these trainings as there are changes being made and handed down by LCI.
Respectfully, DGE Richard Delp

Membership
THANK YOU! A challenge was issued to us a few months ago to DIAL IT UP. A few weeks ago, Inter-national Director Mark Lyon who was also our speaker at our District Convention, issued the same challenge. The challenge issued was for each Club to add one new member to their membership by June 30. Many Clubs are taking this challenge to a new level by adding several new Lions. Thank you for your hard work and concentrating in finding new members. Your efforts have truly strengthened your Club and this organization!
Please be on the watch in July 2019 for information on how Clubs can apply to LCI for a Club Member-ship Grant. This grant can be applied for by any Club that has added new members from April – June 2019. The grant application is for $35 (the entrance fee for each new member) reimbursement back to the Club which will be made in two installments. Remember more members = more service? These grant funds will allow Clubs to put the money back into their service projects so that more can be done now that you have more members and funds!
Service THANK YOU to all who have attempted to log in and report in the MyLCI or MyLion reporting applica-
tions. As the universal login was rolled out, there were several challenges. Many a Club Secretary were frus-trated but thank you for hanging in there until glitches were resolved. Everyone now should be able to log in without issue. Again, thank you for your patience.
As of June 10, 2019, there have been 29,993 Lions hours of service reported year-to-date! Many Clubs have not reported yet for June so we will far surpass 30,000 reported hours this year. Thank you!
Leadership Officer Training will be held on June 17 in Oregon and June 24 in Lanark. These trainings will be iden-tical so officers will only need to attend one of them. Please look for further details in last month’s or this month’s newsletter. All Club Officers and Zone Chairpersons should attend. Thank you for servicing in 2019-20!

Morrison Lions Morrison Lions Club members recently applied paint to the pavilion located at French Creek Park. Prior to this improvement, the pavilion had been a part of the Legacy project for the Centenni-al. Members added the final touch by deciding to paint the structure. The completed paint job gave the pa-vilion a much improved look. Steve Wroble was "foreman" and with all the good workers, the job was done quickly and no group picture was available. Pictured at right: Lions Bob Smith on the left and Jim Ridley apply paint to the exterior peak. Darlene Smith is seen in the background painting on the side.
Pictured at left: Lion Jim Ridley painting the new reinforcements that had been added as a part of the Legacy project.

Morrison Lions
Morrison Lions Club took advantage of the offer from Thomson Lions Club to use their "plusoptix" vision camera. Arrangements were made with the Morrison Community Day Care to screen children between the age of 6 months through 5 years. The Day Care director was very welcoming and urged parents/guardians to take advantage of this free program. Twenty children participated and 19 children were easily screened and passed. One very young child was distracted and we were unable to obtain a screening. This is a great opportunity to serve in your community and the Thomson Lions Club will gladly share their camera. Members assisting in the screening were left to right: Darlene Smith, Flora Stralow, Tracy Muur, and Lynne Wiebenga.
Spring Cleanup of a mile stretch of Route 30 took place between the rainy days. Twelve bags of garbage plus an assortment of various items made for a busy morning. Pictured front row - left to right: Nancy Countryman, Terry Costello, Jim Blakemore, and Bob Country-man, Back row - left to right: Steve Wroble, Aaron Johnson, Beth Wroble, Keith Hamstra. Amboy Lions This is the 17th consecutive year that the Amboy Lions Club has made scholarships available to Amboy high school graduates. The quality of the applicants applying for the scholarship this year was out-standing and the decision a very difficult one. The applicants’ career goals include: accounting, business, political science, teaching, nursing, health care, dental hygiene, biochemistry, finance, electri-cian, architecture and invest-ment banking. The criteria used by the selection committee included: community and ex-tracurricular involvement, citizenship, academic ability, and a desire to pursue higher educa-tion beyond the high school level. The scholarship winners and their parents will be honored later this summer at a Lions Club dinner meeting. This year’s recipients are from left to right: Dorian Barlow, Bailee Highbarger, Rachel Lachat, Emma Bickett, Kelsey Stewart, Savannah Ikens, Clayton Kemp and Lions member Jim Travi.

Oregon Lions Learn About Granny Rose Animal Shelter
Judy Lohse from Granny Rose Animal Shelter in Dixon was the speaker at the Oregon Lions Club regular meeting at the VFW in Oregon on May 23rd. Tri-County Animal Shelter (Also known as Granny Rose Animal Shelter) was formed in the late 70’s and serves Lee, Ogle and Whiteside Counties. It services homeless and abandoned cats and dogs. Cats and dogs stay there for an undetermined amount of time in the hope of finding their forever home. During their stay at the facility, they are microchipped, neutered, heartworm tested and receive flea and tick treatment. After they receive these treatments they are ready for adoption. The adoption fee for a cat is $75 and the adoption fee for a dog is $200. The fee for adopting a dog is higher because it includes the cost of a 6 week dog training class conducted at their dog training center. Granny Rose Shelter has found that a well-trained dog will bond more suc-cessfully with their new owner if they understand how to follow commands. If you are shopping in Dixon and can stop by the facility at 613 River Lane, the shelter welcomes donations of kitty litter, cat and dog treats as well as monetary donations. Leaf River Lions The Leaf River Lions Club presented a $1,000.00 scholarship to Jacquelin Ludwig a Forreston High School Senior. The Club also served their last breakfast of the winter in May. Breakfast won’t restart until September. The Summer Daze Festival was May 31—June 2 and the weather did cooperate for the weekend. Saturday night got close with rain all around us but none fell in Leaf River to stop the Tractor Pulls. The Lions Club sponsored vision screenings for children and had 15 youngster go through the screening process. There was only one referral given to the parents.

The Center for Sight & Hearing (CSH) would like to extend a huge thank you to the District 1-D Lions for championing the Vision Clinic Expansion Project as the recipient of the Lions Club International Foundation’s matching grant in the amount of $96,880. We are thrilled that this generous gift from the Lions, as well as gifts from other steadfast CSH con-tributors, has funded 100% of the cost of the Vision Clinic Expansion. The new Vision Clinic will impact the thousands of people we will serve this year and in years to come,
through additional exam room space and new ophthalmic equipment. The Vision Clinic Expansion has also given us the opportunity to add medical optometrist Dr. Cindy Cesar to our staff to help meet our increased patient demand. We are on track to see over 2,300 vision patients this year; one-third of whom are children. We expect that number to continue to rise an average of 20% every year. Your support matters in the lives of people living with vision loss!
