Hello sailors, I was thinking back to the early days of my first

sailboat, a 1978 18ft Bayliner Buccaneer. Look-ing at this old picture, I don’t know what I miss more, the boat or my hair. LOL. But seriously, at that time I had very little knowledge of sailboat racing other than hearing news reports about the America’s Cup. I was very content to just be able to sail from point A to point B and if it in-volved tacking to windward, it was probably easier to go somewhere else. In the times of the great sailing ships without auxiliary power you had no choice. Learn, or never return... In the decade that I have been a member of HISC I have been involved in racing program, first as crew on Michael Carrington’s 370 Swede Susimi and finally for the last eight years as skipper on my own Beneteau 331 Paradocs.

Monthly General Meeting The Hillsboro Inlet Sailing Club holds a monthly membership meeting generally on the second Thursday of each month, 7:00pm at the Lighthouse Point Yacht and Racquet Club, 2701 N.E. 42nd Street, Lighthouse Point, Tel: (954)942-7224. Please check the monthly calendar or call the editor for any changes in the meeting dates, times, or locations.

For the first couple of years on Paradocs, we trailed the JAM fleet. Well maybe trailed, is probably an exaggeration, but we usually finished, sometimes even on the same day! Progress and improvement comes slowly but surely with racing. I can honestly say that there is no better way than racing to hone your sailing skills, sailing to windward, down-wind, or just maneuvering in close proximity to other vessels. Its all about control, tim-ing and learning to sail your boat. Sometimes frustrating at first, but very satisfying in the end. And remember, there is no better debriefing than the after-race party, lots of fun, drink, food, and good advice. And just maybe... a trophy! So, if you have tried racing and feel frustrated don’t give up. If you haven’t raced yet, join our Gunkhole Fleet for our Sunday Spring & Fall Series Races. Or better yet, sign up for the upcoming Nederlanden Coastal Race and stay for the after-race Father’s Day overnight at the Bahia Mar. Don’t forget, there is nothing better than a sunset race in our Beer Can Series on Wednesday nights. Racers can be cruisers and cruiser can be racers. Remember in racing persistence really pays off. So, join us and “Let’s Go Racing...”. Jeff Sussman, HISC Commodore 2019-2020 - Paradocs

Thank Veterans & 1st Responders July 6th. 2019

As part of the July 4th Independence Cruise, we’re hoping that some Club members will be take 1st Responders & Vets on a Day Sail from Bahia Mar—returning to Bahia Mar for a social. How this will work and what you can do to help make it a great event. The plan is simple: Build a list of boats that are willing to host one or more Vets / 1st Re-

sponders (Guests) for the Day Sail—So, if you are going to be at the Bahia Mar on July 6th. and want to take part (we’re hoping for about 10 boats to participate in the Day Sail.) Please contact me letting me know how many Guests you wish to Host.

I will reach out to local Vets and 1st Responders inviting them for the Day Sail. If you know a Vet or 1st Responder you could invite them as Guest directly.

As Guests come forward, I’ll spread them out between the Host boats, informing the hosts of names, contact info etc.

Hosts should contact the Guests and arrange for meeting them at the Bahia Mar. We will arrange parking permits for the Guests.

About 10am the hosts boats will set out with their guests for a Day Sail out of Port Everglades (or area of their choice!)

About 3pm, the hosts boats should return to Bahia Mar, the social will start at 4:30pm—it’s a BYOB and something to share pot luck social.

The social will end at 7pm, guests departing or returning to their host boats to continue the typical club social.

What can you do? If you are going and want to host a guest(s) contact Paul If you want to help at the social—contact Paul If you want to help manage this event—contact Paul My contact info:

Paul Alcock - Rear Commodore Ph. 954-736-7114 Email: [email protected]

Got Questions? Please contact me. Thanks. Paul Alcock.

Club Program June 13th 2019 By Peder Sahlin—Program Chair

Our June presentation is “Protecting our Florida Reef” presented by Charlie Grego-ry. Charlie is a Veterinarian (VET) at Reef Institute, Former senior aquarist at Miami Seaquarium, and Studied at University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine. The Reef Institute, formerly Healthy Aquatics Marine Institute, is a marine science not-for-profit, on a mission for coral conservation through education, research, and restora-tion. The Reef Institute began with a goal to enhance the public’s understanding of the value and importance of our marine environment through education, research, and per-sonal experiences. Since that time we have grown to reach almost 3,500 children in school settings monthly, conduct research on the health of local coral, and continue with a desire to connect all we encounter with the importance of the ocean and the life that resides under the waves. I think all our members have a vested interest in our local waters, not only what is on the surface that we sail on but also the health of what is underneath that surface. I hope that you will join us to understand the condition of our local reefs and what can be done to protect them moving forward. Let’s welcome Charlie at the General Meeting—June 13th.

Our 2019 Racing season is in full swing. In our fourth weekend of racing (May 5th) 7 boats braved the windy conditions with Endurance, Third Tri, Fandago and Contrails all picking up firsts in their respective fleets. Six different boats have won a leg of the series showing the fleets are very competitive! The full results for each series race are posted on the HISC website. The next few weeks will be busy ones for the rac-ers with one more Spring Series weekend, our first two Coastal Races, the Beer Can Races and The Hospice Regatta. Here are the HISC race dates through June: Hospice Regatta: May 18th (https://trustbridgefoundation.org/event/regatta/) Spring Series: June 2nd West Palm Beach Race: June 8th (1st Coastal) Bill Nederlanden Race: June 14th (2nd Coastal) Beer Can Series: Wednesday evenings from May 1st to Aug 7th The Coastals are great events for both racers and cruisers. These are “point to point” long distance events so the emphasis is more on navigation (cruisers) than tight quarters boat handling. If crossing a start line with a dozen other boats makes your heart race and palms sweat – the Nederlanden race is for you. Each boat will have a starting time assigned according to its rating so in theory – you will start by yourself! Sign up online for the West Palm Beach Race (http://www.regattanetwork.com/event/18335) and don’t forget to get dinner tickets for your crew. Send me (Michael Sparks) an email or IM if you plan on racing in the Nederlanden Race. See the flyers in the inlet/outlet for more details on both races or contact me if you have any questions. Congratulations to The Rabbit and Windpunk for representing HISC on the winner’s stand in the Miami to Key Largo Race. Carl Wehe sailed The Rabbit to two first place finishes in PHRF Division 2 and Dale Kern picked up a second in the ARC Division 3. Check out Michael Peteler’s YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCt-IQawJa-PqgSQlIE6HQAA) for some great regatta videos. See you on the water! Michael Sparks 2019 HISC Race Chair

Story: 052 – Basic White Slacks Teller: Sharon Holland

Basic White Slacks You’ve heard that the difference between men and boys Is mainly the difference in the price of their toys. The wife of a Skipper knows this all too well, As dear little wifey would secretly tell. Our young lady was wooed by a suitor most frantic Who showed not a sign he’d be a sailing fanatic. Before they were married, he made promises great But then came the sailboat – oh, cruel fate! Pearls and cashmeres at birthdays often abound, But for her – sweat shirts and rain gear are usually found. And in order to add just the right touch of class, He gives a pair of white slacks to his favorite lass. The boat gets equipped for jibes and tacks While little old wifey wears her basic white slacks. She’s pleased as can be to save a fine penny The Skipper is thrilled – now he can buy a new genny. Come holiday time with party invitations Instead of new clothes, she makes innovations. While she dreams of an outfit of heavenly blues Along comes the Outlet – You must pay your dues! So, it’s back to the old, so tired and true The white slacks with a scarf of brilliant hue! A race and a weekend at Old Port Cove! We’ll save on motel bills; We’ll cook on our stove. That should leave a nice sum for an outfit to prance At the Saturday evening dinner and dance. With new and old friends we’ll get better acquainted But – the Skipper demands that the bottom be painted. The Change of Command Ball – this will be really great Everyone dresses fancy for this big date. Visions of long skirts, music, romance, and flattery No! It’s white slacks again. The boat needs a new battery A date with Les Gals to the theater and dine Hey! Maybe a slack-suit’s on sale at Burdines But, alas, the white slacks and a top to make do Cause the halyards and main sheets must be renewed!

Should a 1st mate just give up and resign? Oh, no! She plans another outfit divine. The money’s in the checkbook, ready and secure She hurries to spend it… no time to demure. As fast as she heads for the fashionable shop It’s not as fast as the Skipper can hop. A backstay adjuster will help win a race And the funds are all gone with nary a trace. So haul out the old white slacks tonight Just be sure your smile is Big and Bright! Whether scrubbing the teak (oh, my aching back!) Or cutting the lawn – yes, it’s the white slacks When hubby cries out – make sandwiches, get beer In just one short hour, we leave from the pier She’s an absolute whiz with the washing machine And she greets the guests in THE slacks – white and clean. Now everything’s done on the boat – how great! She’s perfect from bow to stern at this date With an eye to the next after race affair Wifey plans a new outfit to curl everyone’s hair. But alas and alack, Dame Fortune won’t smile. Skipper says that the boat has sailed its last mile So a new sloop arrives all shiny and waxed And for wifey, it’s back to the old basic white slacks. Summer cruises to the islands – now that’s a real treat We all compare notes on clothes, drugs, drinks, and eats. No fancy new wardrobe like for classy resorts – We may just cut off the slacks and wear them for shorts! To each and every gal in H. I. S. C.

The predicament’s the same for you and me.

He may have forsaken Mother and Dad

But when it comes to the boat – you’ve been had.

The basic white slacks will appear evermore

To be worn with colorful tops galore.

A sailing trophy they’ve become.

Just remember – you’re not the only one.
