The Window and Door Manufacturers
Association recently launched a microsite
designed to offer residential builders,
remodelers and architects a number of resources
on high-performance windows and doors. The
microsite, OpenUptoPerformance.com, includes
current trends in high-performance windows
and doors, innovations and pertinent research,
performance and standard guides and ways
to use high-performance products to increase
energy efficiency. It also includes the benefits
and return on investment for using high-
performance window and door products. In
addition to these high performance products,
there are a host of window and door trends and
innovations which can also add value to homes.
Jeld-Wen recently unveiled FiniShield™, its
new color finish technology for vinyl windows
and patio doors. “FiniShield™ is superior
to paint, delivering better energy control,
improved durability and an enhanced, more
consistent appearance,” said Rick Ditzek
with Carter Lumber. The company is the first
manufacturer to offer a laminated-color solution
on a nationwide, multiproduct platform basis.

that offers trend-right colors to match market
demand, meets consumers' desires for more
dramatic and custom-design statement colors.
Marvin recently unveiled a new logo and
product portfolio structure, which unifies its
brand. The Marvin Windows and Doors and
Integrity Windows and Doors brands have
been united and rebranded as Marvin. The
company’s products are now organized into
three collections. The Signature Collection is
the company’s most “aspirational” product
category, covering products previously known
as Marvin Contemporary Studio, Marvin
Modern, as well as the ongoing Marvin
Ultimate Series. The Elevate Collection offers
a balance of price and features, including
products previously known as Integrity Wood-
Ultrex. The Essential Collection is focused on
accessible design and simple profiles, and
includes products previously known as Integrity
All-Ultrex. “This rebranding is great for all of
our customers, as all products will be known
as Marvin,” said Chris Caswell with Marvin
Design Gallery by Laurence Smith. “This will
eliminate customer confusion about whether
Integrity products are made by Marvin. There
will be no change in product quality, except
for future product improvements.” One such
improvement is the addition of casements and
awnings to the Marvin Modern line. “We are
now able to provide a full house package in the
Marvin Modern line,” said Chris.
Dark colors for windows continue to trend.
“Dark colors for window exteriors have been
around for a while,” said Paul Ward with
N.A. Mans & Sons. “More manufacturers
have recently started offering black as a color
option, and we are seeing that color gaining in
popularity.” Mans sells Andersen and Jeld-Wen
products and both manufacturers offer black
on exterior and interiors of windows. In terms
of doors, fiberglass doors have captured the
market and most customers are requesting that
their doors be pre-finished, according to Paul.
He is also seeing some upsurge in bright colors
for entrance doors.

Weather King Windows & Doors is now
offering self-actuating locks on their Platinum
series windows. As with most newer model
cars that automatically lock when the car is
driven, these windows
lock automatically when
they are closed. “You can
actually hear a snap when
the locks automatically
engage,” said Matthew
Ball with Weather King
Windows & Doors. “We
have been offering these
self-actuating locks on the
Platinum line for about eight
months and they are well
received by our customers.”
Weather King continues
to use a pocket sill on all
their window lines. “A
pocket sill strengthens
the window, makes it quieter, and provides
a more uniform look,” said Matthew. In the
door area, Matthew continues to see a trend
toward fiberglass doors. “Fiberglass doors
are energy efficient and have a smoother
look,” said Matthew. “They can be painted or
stained, but we are getting a lot of requests
for painted doors lately. Wine red is one of our
most ordered colors in doors.” Matthew notes
that customers are also moving away from six
panel doors toward flush slab doors with some
glass. “We can build anything that we get a
picture of, and being a local manufacturer, the
lead time is reduced on those custom orders,”
said Matthew.
Retractable screens are gaining in
popularity, especially in Michigan where
mosquitos and other insects can ruin an
otherwise beautiful night. Tarnow Doors has
recently brought on the Stoett Screens line
of retractable screens. Stoett, founded in
2003 by the Stover family, is based in Ohio,
and prides itself on its quality-built American
made products. The company offers custom
fit retractable screens for any application,
including garages, patios, lanais, doors and
windows. "Stoett can make screens that
perfectly fit any opening, whether for entry
doors or a set of panoramic sliding patio
doors," said Henry Tarnow with Tarnow
Doors. The retractable screens come in both
manual and motorized operation and can be
surface or jamb mounted. "Customers can
choose their own personalized design, color,
screen type and automation system," said
Henry. "Stoett also offers a clear vinyl screen
option which provides privacy and keeps out
wind and rain for those days when the weather
isn't cooperating but you still want to enjoy your
patio, lanai or garage."

April 2019 Permits Higher Than Forecast; Continue To Outpace 2015 MICHAEL C. STOSKOPF, EXECUTIVE OFFICER
Based on residential permit data compiled by the Home
Builders Association of Southeastern Michigan (HBA) and reported in the HBA/Carter Lumber Southeastern Michigan Residential Building Activity Report™, a total of 431 single-family permits were issued in Macomb, Oakland, St. Clair and Wayne counties in April 2019. This brings the year-to-date total to 1,173 for 2019.
April’s result for new home permits issued exceeded the econometric forecast of 409 for April. As mentioned in the past few months, 2015 was the last year in which we had comparable significant weather impacts to start the year. Comparing 2019 to 2015, totals through April 2019 (1,173) outpace the total through April 2015 (1,086) as well as the monthly total coming in 5 percent higher than April 2015 (409).
The reason for the higher than forecast new home permit activity in April is most easily attributable to pent-up demand due to weather conditions that inhibited construction from January through March. Based on conversations I’ve had with builders and lumber companies, the excessively wet weather we saw in April may have further delayed permit activity thus indicating that May could see even more of an upward trend.
There continue to be good reasons for optimism with respect to improved new home permit activity as spring and summer approach. The leading factor is the continued upward climb in the number of people employed in the 4-county region, now solidly above 1.9 million, and at its highest level since mid-2005. Other positive economic factors include a year-over-year decline in crude oil prices and improving 30-year fixed mortgage rates. n

Mans other locations are in Canton (47255 Michigan Ave.) and Trenton (3300 W. Jefferson).
It is with deep sadness that we inform you of the death of Fred Capaldi, Sr., at the age of 102. Mr. Capaldi founded Capaldi Building Co. in 1945. Servicing returning WWII veterans, his portfolio and reputation for quality work began to spread throughout the Southwest suburbs of Detroit. By the 1950s, projects expanded into Birmingham and Bloomfield Hills with a main focus on custom homes.
Mr. Capaldi is the father of HBA Past President Fred I. Capaldi and grandfather of HBA Board of Directors member Tim Capaldi.
We offer our sincere condolences to Fred, Barb, Tim, Allison, other family members, friends and associates.
The funeral mass was held on April 30. To honor the memory of Mr. Capaldi, the family suggests a donation to St. Anne’s Mead (https://stannesmead.org/) in Southfield. n

Severe Weather And Evacuation Tips For Office and Home

Tornadoes are the most erratic, most
unpredictable and most violent of storms. They can happen anytime...anywhere, but are most common in Wyoming from May through September.
The tornado funnel may range from a few yards to nearly a mile in width. It may travel slowly or as fast as 60 mph. It may skip along or even make a U-turn. It may move along the ground a few hundred feet or several hundred miles. Learn the difference between a Tornado Watch and a Tornado Warning.Tornado Watch:
Indicates that conditions are right for a tornado to develop and that the sky should be watched. Be alert to changing weather conditions.Tornado Warning:
Indicates a tornado has been sighted or that radar indicates one has developed or could develop within minutes. Warnings will give the location of the tornado and the area immediately affected by the warning. When a warning is issued, move quickly to shelter.Immediate Dangers:
The immediate threat from tornadoes is danger to life and property from violently whirling winds and debris hurled through the air by the winds. Wind speeds in tornadoes can exceed 250 mph.Long Term Dangers:
Long-term risks include the possibility of building collapse, fallen trees and power lines, broken gas lines, broken sewer and water mains, and the outbreak of fires. Agricultural crops and industries may be damaged or destroyed.Straight-line Winds:• Responsible for most thunderstorm wind
damage• Winds can exceed 100 mph!• One type of straight-line wind, the
downburst, can cause damage equivalent to a strong tornado and can be extremely dangerous to aviation.
• During the summer in the western states, thunderstorms often produce little rain but very strong wind gusts and dust storms.
Thunder Storm Facts:• Thunderstorms affect relatively small areas
when compared with hurricanes and winter storms.
• The typical thunderstorm is 15 miles in diameter and lasts an average of 30 minutes. Nearly 1,800 thunderstorms are occurring at any moment around the world. That's 16 million a year!
• Despite their small size, all thunderstorms are dangerous.
• Every thunderstorm produces lightning, which kills more people each year than tornadoes.
• Heavy rain from thunderstorms can lead to flash flooding.
• Strong winds, hail, and tornadoes are also dangers associated with some thunderstorms.
• Of the estimated 100,000 thunderstorms that occur each year in the United States, only about 10 percent are classified as severe.
• Your National Weather Service considers a thunderstorm severe if it produces hail at least 3/4-inch in diameter, wind 58 mph or higher, or tornadoes.
• Take the time now to understand these dangers and learn basic safety rules!
Lightning:• Occurs with all thunderstorms.• Averages 93 deaths and 300 injuries each
year.• Causes several hundred million dollars in
damage to property and forests annually.• While the flashes we see as a result of a
lightning strike travel at the speed of light (670,000,000 mph) an actual lightning strike travels at a comparatively gentile 270,000 mph.

Water Billing Legislation Introduced
A Democratic effort in the Michigan Senate proposes significant water billing changes for local governments that own or operate
a water or sewage system. Here are a few of the changes proposed under Senate Bill 271:
• Municipalities must include on a bill the consumption in gallons (or
provide a conversion factor) as well as the local water or sewerage
rates for each component of the bill.
• An option must be provided to customers to choose “levelized
billing” which is a rolling average of customer water and sewerage
use for the trailing 12 months.
• Local government systems must eliminate fees based on the type of
payment a customer makes or interest for past due bills.
• Municipalities must adopt a dispute resolution process for a
customer to dispute a bill. If the customer disputes a bill, the
customer can withhold payment during the dispute, will not accrue
interest during the dispute, and the municipality shall not turn off
service during the dispute. Costs associated with one dispute per
calendar year shall be borne by the municipality, with additional
disputes to cost the customer 50% of the dispute resolution cost.
• Requires municipal monitoring and notification for customer-side
leaks.
• Allows for civil remedies for municipal violation of the act.The bill has been referred to the Senate Local Government Committee
for consideration.

This creative fundraising event brings together professional, enthusiast and student Designers, Stagers, Organizers - and others with a passion for design - who each create a design vignette using two anchor pieces from the Humble Design inventory to create the “Humble Home.”
The Challenge equally supports the Scholarship Fund of the HBA of Southeastern Michigan Professional Women in Building Council and Humble Design. Humble Design serves individuals, families, and veterans emerging from homelessness by transforming their empty house into a warm, welcoming and uplifting home with donated furniture and household goods.
This year’s event will take place on October 1 at the Royal Oak Farmers Market at 316 East Eleven Mile Road in Royal Oak.
