Go on a Cave Quest! It’s Time for DAY CAMP! We are so excited for your children to attend our summer day camp, where they will journey into cavernous Caves and learn about Jesus’ Mighty Power!
For Kids entering Kindergarten-4th Grade JULY 11-JULY 15 Cost: $30 Monday-Friday 9am-12pm (Except Friday which is 9am-2pm where you’ll bring a sack lunch and have a fun WATER DAY!) Each morning, all children will gather together in the sanctuary, where they will sing songs, jump for joy, and hear about Jesus’ love for them. They will then split into small groups and go to various stations, where they will: listen to Bible Stories, watch videos about real kids who are unique and loved by God, eat tasty snacks, play crazy games, and participate in some amazing science experiments. They will all then meet together in a large group again, where parents, grandparents and caregivers can hear about the day’s learnings and experiences. Remember to come at 11:30am! On Friday, July 15, all kids will bring their own sack lunch (if they forget, we’ll provide a sandwich!) and swimsuits for a fun water day! Later that evening, everyone is invited back with their families (AND congregational members, too!) for a BBQ at 6pm and a fun, cool program that highlights the week’s fun at 7pm. If you want to register, go online to bethesdalutheranchurch.com OR fill out an application in the entryway. Remember to invite your grandkids, your friends, or the neighbor down the street! If you have any questions, call Pastor Sarah at 541-852-5637.
Help Us Go Spelunking! There is a whole lot of things we need to make our VBS successful: One: You! If you would like to help shape a child’s life and teach her about Jesus’ love, volunteer! There is a variety of opportunities for you to share of your time. Talk to Pastor Sarah or fill out an application found at front desk. You will be blessed! Two: Stuff! We need things from tents to climbing ropes to pita bread! If you are able to donate or loan something to us, please see the boards in the entryway!
Summer Schedule Beginning June 19, we will be switching to our summer schedule with worship services at 8:30 and 10am. Office hours will change to 10-2.
The education and fellowship hour will resume September 11.
Following the Risen One, Something for Everyone, Helping Anyone 3
Come Help Decorate! Ever wonder how VBS gets to look so awesome?! It’s because people like you give a bit of their time and creativity (can you hold a scissors, that’s the creativity we need!) to help create a world where the youngest among us can experience God in an engaging and new way.
Come to one or all of the following decorating parties. Get to know your fellow friends a little better (bonding over a hot glue gun is so fun!), have some pizza, and help turn the church building into cavernous caves.
Dates to Help: Friday, June 24 from 4-7pmFriday, July 1 from 4-7pmFriday, July 8 from 4-7pm and Saturday, July 09 until we’re done!
Any questions? Talk to Pastor Sarah.

Summer Daytimers Thursdays, 11am We will now meet through the summer!
Thursday Daytimers is holding a Lectionary Study, looking at the readings for the upcoming Sunday worship. The upcoming preacher will lead the study. This will be an interesting opportunity to prepare for Sunday’s readings, to see the sermon writing process midstream, and to help shape the sermon through your engagement.
Sprout Sponsor Update Thank you so much to all who have pledged and/or donated to the Little Sprouts program. So far we are able to feed 43 children next year! We received a grant from the Oregon Synod for $1000 to feed even more of the hungry kids in Bethel schools.
Currently, we are visiting local PTOs to ask for additional funds to feed even more! That's a lot of children who will be able to concentrate on their friends and studies instead of their growling tummies.
If you have not yet donated, please consider. Even a small amount, paired with others, can provide the food our kids need. And, if you have any brilliant ideas on how we might secure additional funding, please talk to Kay Kirkpatrick or Pastor Sarah. Again, thank you for all your prayers and gifts!
Bags will contain individual serving sizes of:
• Apple sauce
• Pudding
• Oatmeal
• Crackers
• Raisins
• Mac & cheese
• Juice box
• Granola

Fair Trade Update! “Equal Exchange is proud to announce that Bethesda Lutheran is among the top 5% of over 8,000 faith based organizations that purchase our fair trade products for their congregations to serve and sell. 2016 marks the 20th anniversary of the partnership between Equal Exchange and Lutheran World Relief.
Twenty cents per pound of all coffee, tea, chocolate and snacks purchased by participating Lutheran groups (Bethesda Lutheran included) goes back to Lutheran World Relief as part of the Small Farmer Fund, which aids directly in the many projects LWR supports to end poverty, injustice and human suffering. Your church has been ordering since 2004, and your sales are still growing year on year, which is incredible! We sincerely thank you for your long-term support of small farmers and authentic fair trade over the years.”

Men & Women’s Book Club Tuesdays, beginning June 21 from 6-7pm in Duck/Beaver Room First Book: Searching for Sunday: Loving, Leaving, and Finding the Church by Rachel Held Evans. From the reviews of Searching for Sunday:
“If you’re done with church or simply on the verge of throwing in the towel, then please, please please read this book. It’s brave, wry, and exquisitely penned meditation from someone who knows precisely how you feel.”
“Searching for Sunday helped me forgive the church and myself and fall in love with God all over again.”
If you need a copy of the book, you can find it on Amazon or talk to Pastor Sarah (she’ll get you a copy!). This will be an engaging study, where we examine the church, with all its flaws and imperfections, and then hopefully emerge as more faithful followers of the Jesus who loves us.
Islam Class Summary In case you missed it, summaries of all sessions have been recorded and are available online. Thank you for making this class one of the most popular and audience-engaged we’ve experienced: https://vimeo.com/album/3964050.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, Han Solo avenged the destruction of an innocent planet by helping Luke Skywalker blow up the Death Star. Han walked away with a gold medal and the love of his life. But when Solo Hahn—named in honor of the beloved action hero—tries to avenge the death of his gray-and-white kitten, he gets eight months of community service. Eight months of working at the local raptor center helping owls—his now sworn enemies. Melissa Hart lives in Eugene, is a friend of mine, and has written a wonderful novel for young adults (and adults) based on her work as a volunteer at the Cascade Raptor Center and her relationship with her brother who has Down Syndrome. A great read!
Replaced Books on the Shelf These popular books have disappeared, reordered, and are again on the shelf.
• When Books Went to War: The Stores That Helped Us Win World War 2, by Molly Manniing.
• The Big Burn: Teddy Roosevelt and the Fire That Saved America, by Timothy Egan
• Soul Keeping by John Ortberg
• Still Alice by Lisa Genova
New Books on the Shelf • The Dog Who Would Fly: The Incredible Story
of WW2 Airman and the Four-legged Hero Who Flew At His Side by Damien Lewis
• The Meaning of Marriage by Timothy Keller
• One Summer: America 1927 by Bill Bryson
• Valiant Ambition: George Washington, Benedict Arnold, and the Fate of the American Revolution by Nathanial Philbrick
• Lilac Girls: A Novel by Martha Hall Kelly
What Have I Been Reading? • Avenging the Owl by Melissa Hart (see above)
• Winter: Notes from Montana by Rick Bass (I have discovered this author and thereby consuming his books)
• Hermit’s Story by Rick Bass
• Chicago by Brian Doyle (according to me, another masterpiece)
• The Water is Wide by Pat Conroy
• As We Are Now by May Sarton (an amazing little book – in our library)
• Homeland by Barbara Kingsolver (one of her first books – short stories)
• Where You Once Belonged by Kent Haruf
• The House By the Sea by May Sarton
Bethesda’s library is both a ministry and a service to members and non-members. We are privileged to share good literature with the people who come to our building. Therefore, we expect to lose books. Once in a while, we replace books that have been missing for a long time. Mim Baker calls in overdues. She is tolerant and doesn’t call until books have been out for a couple of months. When it becomes 4-6 months, she will call or send an e-mail, sometimes several times. We mail reminders once in a while. Those who fail to return books to our library are usually not those who read this Evangel. Thank you for keeping track of Bethesda’s books, and returning them promptly. Be sure to return our books here and not to the Bethel Branch public library. Passing your checked out book on to a friend almost always results in a lost book.

Graveling Before the Lord “Come to him, a living stone, though rejected by mortals yet chosen and precious in God’s sight, and like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.” Peter 2:4-5
It has been an exciting time in the parsonage, to say the least. To think that as first-time parents, Andrea and I asked dear Rick to please mow outside of Ezra’s nap time, and now, all three boys sleep deeply through sounds of rocks and engines, tucked safely in our vibrating house.
Ezra was manning his station long before 7am on day one of the parking lot destruction, with construction vehicle toys in hand. The boys have kept a steady supervision of the project - you might as well call them Svend and Poul Juniors.* When the rest of you will be celebrating the completed parking lot, it will be a sad day in our household to see the machines go.
In his first letter, Peter encourages Christians to become like “living stones” built into a spiritual house, laid on the foundation of Christ who is the cornerstone. It certainly sounds more exciting to be large stones built into a house than insignificant gravel paved into a parking lot. At the same time, we recognize the hospitality of a safe parking lot and the welcome it provides to people making their way to God’s house.
On my best days, I would like to think I’m one of the bricks in the wall of God’s house, doing my small part to hold up the structure. In reality, my heart is so often the kind of gravel that needs to be bulldozed into a useful position, paved over and given a smoother exterior. I don’t want to give anyone a flat tire on their way to Jesus.
Peter preceded his building metaphor with a call to excavate all that would prevent the proper construction of God’s spiritual house:
Rid yourselves, therefore, of all malice, and all guile, insincerity, envy, and all slander. Like newborn infants, long for the pure, spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow into salvation— if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.
My fellow rocks, we are together being smoothed into God’s service. It begins with excavation, which is necessary but painful. It continues with the new material given by the Holy Spirit for the reconstruction of our lives. It culminates in a unity that prepares the way to the Lord’s house, making straight the path of God.
Peace, Pastor Tom
* Svend Toftemark and Poul Olesen are Bethesda retirees who have jumped back into the world of construction to oversee this project for us. Thank you!

Kind Words “Dear Women of Bethesda,
The Sassy Senior Board would like to thank you and the ladies who made such a lovely brunch for us. We were so impressed by the beauty of your sanctuary and the stained glass windows. The history was very interesting and your church is involved in so many community needs. The luncheon was presented so well, just like “High Tea!” Everything was so delicious and the ladies were so pleasant and hospitable.
Thank you so much for making our visit so enjoyable.
~ Sassy Senior Board”
“Thank you to all the wonderful women who baked and brought cookies to the service for Tina Olson. Everything was set up so nice and though the reception was brief and simple, it was comforting to know it was all handled and taken care of. A big thank you to those that served, kept cookie plates full, and cleaned up.
We really appreciated your time and friendship to our Mom. Her bible study group friends were such an important and special part of her life, as was her faith and church. Thank you to those who visited her at Oak Tree and in her last days.
It meant so much to her family we believe to her also.
God Bless!

Leave A Legacy Have you thought of including Bethesda in your will or living trust? Would you like to leave a lasting legacy to the church? Such bequests strengthen the ministry both now and into the future.
It can be as simple as including in your will:
“I leave ____% to Bethesda Lutheran Church, an Oregon non-profit corporation, 4445 Royal Avenue, Eugene, Oregon, 97401.”
Feel free to contact Pastor Steve, or Lois Toftemark about the Bethesda Foundation, or Dave Bullard about the Bethesda Mission Endowment Fund.
