News from the Office...

It’s with great sadness that we farewell another Greyhound person this month. Colin Keene passed away unexpectantly in Dunedin last month. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.

Tickets for the Annual Awards dinner will be available shortly. We will announce it in the magazine and on our website when they are available. We’d love to see as many of you there as possible. It’s a brilliant night to celebrate Greyhound Racing and to acknowledge those of you who have worked so incredibly hard.

As we go to print, we have learned about the sudden passing of Ken Madden of Tokoroa. Ken was struck by a logging truck on SH 1. He and his dog were both fatally injured. Our condolences to his family and friends.

We would like to remind our LPs to please be careful on the roads, not only for yourselves and other drivers on the road, but for the precious cargo you’re transporting to and from races. Never drive tired or under the influence and stick to the speed limit.

Until next month... Happy Racing!

On Saturday 15th May we had a clubs meeting in Wellington where remits to take forward to the 2013 AGM were discussed. The discussions were wide and varied and covered governance, structure and racing. In all 15 remits and 10 points of general business were discussed at a very positive and constructive meeting.

The NZRB have advised that Sky Australia will not be able to take the 9 additional meetings in the South Island in June and July, although they had originally indicated that they would. As the export sales partially fund these extra meetings this was a serious financial blow to the industry. After exploring alternatives it was decided that the best result for all concerned was to move these meetings to Monday afternoon when Sky could cover them, accordingly from and including Monday 10th June all the additional Monday meetings will be held at Addington on Monday afternoon starting at 3pm.

Domestic turnovers are still buoyant and the NZRB are looking to a record offcourse turnover for this year. Our turnovers are also positive and encouraging for the sport is the growth in oncourse turnover as well of late particularly at Wanganui where the new stand and some good promotions has seen their Friday Night turnovers grow well and continuing to increase week on week. Fixed Odds Betting continues to grow strongly and is 35% above last year. Export sales have slipped back by nearly 5% due to our product getting squeezed in the Australian Market Place as more TAB licences are being issued to GRNSW.

The racing calendar has been finalised and while there aren’t many changes we have managed to get two Saturday Night dates with Christchurch holding a Xmas at the races function on Saturday December 7th and Wanganui racing on Saturday 28th December. GRNZ formally requested an additional 35 race dates for 2013/2014 season but these have not yet been confirmed

RACING MANAGER’S REPORT

Colin Keen1942 -2013

The Greyhound Industry was saddened to hear of the passing of Colin Keen recently.

He had devoted many, many years to greyhound administration, plus officiating at race meetings. Included in Colin’s contribution was being a former president of the Otago Club, as well as serving on the GRNZ board.

Handlers wore black armbands throughout the Otago meeting held on April 30th as a mark of respect and the club ran a Colin Keen Memorial trophy in his memory.

OBITUARY

as Sky Australia have yet to confirm that they can be shown in Australia, once again without export turnover funding these meetings will be difficult.

If you have any further questions please don’t hesitate to contact me.

************All Trainers and Owners – Please read***********We need to know where your greyhounds are!

As soon as your greyhound has been retired from racing you must notify the Office of its whereabouts.

How?There is a form on the website – Notification of a Retired/Deregistered Greyhound, which you can fill in. You can also send us the back page of the new race booklets, or we will accept an email, fax or phone call.

What do we need to know? Sorry, but “Retired” is simply not enough. Is your greyhound living at home as a pet; retired for breeding; gone to GAP (or other rehoming place); sold/gifted privately (we need contact details of that person); exported to Australia;euthanized – vet certificate required.

Are your racing greyhounds up-to-date?If you haven’t contacted us lately – (or we haven’t contacted you) you might have several “retired” greyhounds on your list. You should be able to see all the greyhounds under your name when you do your online nomina-tions; by putting your name in under “Greyhound Profiles”; or you can call us and check your list and we can remove those that are not still currently racing.

And a reminder…We cannot makes changes to greyhounds/syndicates, etc without the appropriate paperwork!

LP REGISTRATION BALANCE OF FEES OWING

It’s that time again…the balance of fees for the period 1 August 2013 - 31 July 2014 are now due and need to be paid by 31 July 2013.

Six starts during the month of April netted Spitfire Osti five wins and one third placing, $16,600 in stake earnings, the Group 1 NZ Derby at Cambridge Raceway and the April Greyhound of the Month title. Spitfire Osti is trained by Carolyn Hore at Cambridge and owned by Sydneysider Richard White. Carolyn has only been back in New Zealand since about August last year after having spent a number of years plying her trade as a Greyhound trainer in Australia. Carolyn moved to Cambridge with her family, including husband Greg and son Luke and set up as a public trainer. Spitfire Osti’s owner, Richard White has been a supporter of the kennel, both in Australia and here in New Zealand and has provided a number of winners including Spitfire Osti’s litter mate Explosive Osti. Spitfire Osti looks pretty classy so the connections can look forward to further success in the coming months.

LICENCED PERSON REPRESENTATIVE COLUMN

Hi, Graeme Calverley reporting,

A dream came true a couple of weeks ago for Christchurch owner, trainer, breeder Alison Lee and her long-time partner Merv O’Brien when Alison’s dog ‘Clone Your Own’ who is now in the care of respected Australian trainer Robert Britton, won the $145,000 ($100,000 to the winner) Harrison Dawson Group 2 which was restricted to dogs only and held at the Victorian headquarters of Sandown. Alison has always had a high opinion of this dog since he was a pup and that opinion grew stronger after he won the Galaxy Sprint at Christchurch last November; strong enough in fact to warrant a chance against some of Australia’s best and he hasn’t disappointed. In the short time he has been there he has created a lot of interest on both sides of the Tasman and it is a huge boost for the NZ breeding scheme following in the footsteps of ‘Thrilling Brat’. Alison took another gamble and drew semen from ‘Clone Your Own’ before he left NZ, this has proven to be a wise move with his now celebrity status. Congratulations to Alison from everybody in New Zealand.

Our NZGRA website now has replays of all New Zealand race meetings, the footage is courtesy of Trackside and the office is trying to get the replays up within 24-48 hours of the meeting. Split times are also available at some tracks and these listed in the results page under each race. Check out the notice later in the magazine outlining some of the other changes that have taken place on the website. These have been a work in progress for some time and hopefully it will be appreciated by all and sundry. With the findings of our independent review into Greyhound racing now being made available to the Board the next phase will be to take its findings to club committees through a series of meetings over the next couple of months. The Board would like to thank everybody who took part in the review.

Finally, congratulations to Mick Kennedy, this month’s Youth Encouragement award winner. Mick is a part of the powerful John McInerney Darfield kennel. Well done Mick.

Cheers, GraemePhone & fax (07) 826 4656, (0274) 926 653Email: [email protected]

SURGICAL INSEMINATION - Please be advised that some Studs are now requiring, as part of their condition of sale of frozen semen that Surgical

Insemination (AI) is used rather than TCI (Trans Cervical Insemination). In the event of a missed/failed pregnancy, the Stud may reject the claim for

a replacement if the TCImethod is used. This view is also supported by vets in the Australian Greyhound Racing Industry. GRNZ therefore recommends

that all inseminations should be Surgical. Please discuss this with your vet for further information.

Recent recipients of their Public Trainers licenses’ Steve Hurd and Sammy Stone are looking forward to presenting their charges on the track.

Steve and Sammy work full time for Malcolm and Lisa Grant who have trained from their Lowcliffe kennels for 16 years.

Steve (18) has been working part time for the Grants

for about 5 years. He came into the game through his grandmother Pam Hurd who has successfully raced dogs with the Grants and currently has the handy litter racing around out of her retired racer Paula Grace (Smash Amego, Smash Dora, Smash Amy and Indi’s Grace). Steve took up a full time position at the end of last year deciding to forego further study over his love of the greyhounds. He believes there will be plenty of time for study but did not want to miss the opportunity of giving the dogs a go. He has shared ownership of Where’s John Cee and Smash Amy. Steve has experienced all sides of the racing game, from whelping to racing (hence his soft spot for Smash Amy) and being a part of the preparation from airport arrival to racing.

Sammy (18) arrived at the Grants on the 28th November from her home in Wellington “for a few weeks experience” and hasn’t gone home! Sammy and her father Anthony as well as racing a few dogs have

a huge amount of experience with GAP and although Sammy had worked part time for a few kennels in the North Island during part of last year, was keen to learn about the hounds from the racing side of things.

Sammy has a kind hand with the dogs and has been in charge of the pups on the property. A Where’s Robyn x Business Time litter of four and Paula Grace x Lochinvar Marlow litter of 8 are a handful but she tackles the task every day and is socialising the pups beautifully.

Sammy will train in conjunction with Lisa and Steve will train in conjunction with Malcolm. Lisa and Mal have gifted the pair a percentage of two Australian dogs currently racing. Black Tank and Iona Brightspark will be the first two to be trained. It is just a matter of deciding which partnership will train which dog. Lisa suggests a flip of the coin would be the easiest answer. She says the dedication she sees in Steve and Sammy as well as the work ethic shown is extremely high and considers her and Malcolm to be very lucky to have these young trainers with them. The Grants are keen to help young people make it in this industry

and realise the attributes they see in Hurd and Stone are just what is needed. Nothing is just handed to the young trainers the Grants are quick to point out. Hurd and Stone are expected to show a high level of maturity at the track, while being able to clearly communicate with owners, and understand the workings of the kennels are a few things they have been shown – both rising admirably to the task.

Taking turns at cooking the meals, on the other hand, is something that has not taken priority for the young ones. Although it did look promising at one point when Sammy learnt how to make a toasted sandwich thats as far as it got. We live in hope!

Life After RacingChile Will He

Stanley was bred and raced by Gary Cleeve from Rangiora. Mainly a sprinter, Stanley loved his racing career. He had 101 starts for 12 wins and 19 placings. He was retired via GAP, and now lives with Sarah, Chris, Alex and Emma in Palmerston North. We caught up with them recently and this is what they had to say:

Stanley came into our lives in February 2011, just over two years ago. We used to live in Auckland where we’d had goldfish and cats (one of which disposed of the fish!). By the time we moved to Palmerston North, where Chris grew up, we were pet-free, but had two young children. As they got older we started having pets again, starting small but getting progressively larger (tree-frogs, then mice). When the mice died there was a fair amount of pressure to increase the scale again to guinea-pigs, or rabbits, and we even thought about cats- briefly.... and then we started thinking about a pet we could all enjoy, by getting a dog.

I had grown up with a three-legged black Labrador, and Chris’s parents have had a couple of Border Collies, but we weren’t putting a lot of thought into it until my father in law, (a retired vet) brought us a GAP flyer. At first I thought what odd, pointy-looking dogs greyhounds were, as I had only ever seen them on TV racing, wearing muzzles and vests and didn’t at first think that would be us. However, after looking at the GAP website and thinking about it for another eight months or so, we came to the decision that giving a home to a retired racer would actually be pretty cool, plus not having to go through the puppy stage could be a good thing.

We filled in the application forms, had our home-check and then we waited. Not having cats or toddlers, and because we didn’t mind about the age or gender meant we weren’t waiting for very long! The day we picked up Stanley from the North Island kennel base in Sanson was really really exciting and I couldn’t wait to finally meet him. The children then aged 10 and 13 weren’t really sure what to expect, but I think felt the excitement. When we arrived Irene brought Stanley (or Kurt as he was known then) out to meet us. After we filled in the adoption contract, bought a few essentials for him, and we were on our way home. We put him in the back of our old station wagon, from where he dribbled over the kids’ heads all the way back to Palmerston North which was quite funny... for those of us who weren’t being dribbled on.

Stanley settled into his new domestic life with our family quite quickly and easily. For a few months he ‘collected’ items from around the house and deposited them in his bed; he especially liked my son’s compact umbrella and would seek it out from inside his school bag in his room and take off with great stealth. My son now shuts his bedroom door when he is not in it, even though Stanley has given up this kleptomania. He is self-appointed head of security and lets us know when there is any activity in the street; mainly by barking and tearing up and down the fence line if he’s outside. He also lets us know if the phone is ringing - he joins in by yowling. We love the way he chatters - especially when there’s a meal due, and sometimes he grunts when he’s having a rub around the ears; we think this is his happiest noise. Other than that he exhibits the classic greyhound quiet reserve!

Since we have had Stanley I have had lots of comments from other dog owners when out walking and have been able to answer questions and dispel a few myths about greyhounds as family pets. We have met some great people through owning a retired racer; and always try to go on the monthly walks and feel we have made some good friends over the last two years.

Welcome home Carolyn Hore

Carolyn was brought up and raised in New Zealand. Her parents (Lois and Peter Henley) crossed the Tasman numerous years ago, successfully training greyhounds before re-crossing the Tasman to set up a training establishment in Cambridge. Carolyn moved out to Bathurst where she enjoyed considerable training success for around 15 years. Included during that period was winning the Bathurst trainer’s premiership on nine occasions.

Carolyn and (husband) Greg have now moved back to Cambridge and set up kennels next to Peter, and through the contacts they built up in Sydney and Bathurst have been enjoying a hot winning streak. Included in those contacts are Sydney owners Lyn & Richard White who have provided the Hore’s with a number of the “Osti” chasers, one of which is Spitfire Osti who won the NZ Derby at Cambridge 18th April.

“Before the race I did say to myself if this fairy tale pans out, then it is all for Mum“ (the late Lois Henley) said Carolyn from the winner’s podium. “It was the emotion of the whole thing, I was so overcome with happiness.”“This is a family achievement, My dad Peter, husband Greg , and son Luke all work in together so this win makes all the hard work pay off” added Carolyn after the team effort which led to her 1st Group 1 training success.

Welcome back to New Zealand Carolyn, Greg and Luke!

Albion (Pressure Point) and Belle (Jetsun Belle) have retired after respectable racing careers to the Hutt Valley. Their owner, Carey Buck, tells us about their adoption:

“Our experience with GAP has been great. I had never owned a dog, and if I am honest, I have always been a bit nervous around them, but I knew having a dog was a part of Chris’s life growing up. We had looked on and off at the GAP website (Chris’s uncle back in the UK had owned racers and had several retired housemates). Finally, after meeting some hounds at the Martinborough Fair in 2012 we put in our application to adopt.

For me the home visit was great. I was so nervous but Sally and her hound George put me at ease. No question was too daft and I felt really reassured by George who made himself quite at home! Then it was all on when we got the call that there was a hound for us....enter Albion (Pressure Point). He has been with us for a year now and we have loved every minute. He settled in to pet life so well and I just couldn’t imagine him not being around. We certainly attract a bit of attention on our walks too.Leaving him at the kennels when we went on holiday was harder for us than him - he had a fabulous time!It was only a matter of time before we decided to adopt again and Belle (Jetsun Belle) joined our household in early November.

As soon as we arrived at Sanson to collect her, she jumped right in the back of the car with a big smile. She has settled down with her housemate Albion really well. She is such a character and is always making us laugh. Every day is an adventure for our Belle - each time we go out it is like she has never left the house before.

Both Albion and Belle enjoy doing their bit for GAP at events like Petone Fair, Animates Adoption Days and even rattling a tin at Wellington Railway Station raising awareness so their friends can find homes too. All four of us enjoy the GAP Hutt Valley monthly runs and have made great friends.”
