FROM THE PRINCIPAL What a great success for our students! The SWS Region Dance Festival was held in May this year. Ms Dennis and Ms Donaldson accompanied all our performers on both days. I have it on good authority that everyone was outstanding. I was also extremely honoured to be invited to attend the VIP night and I witnessed first-hand the performance of Brooke Murray and Lachlan MacDonald. Both Brooke and Lachlan were invited by the Region to compere this event. It is a great honour to be invited and the Region could not have selected two better students. The Regional Director, Mr Dizdar, approached me towards the end of the event and acknowledged their exceptional performance. Well done everyone!

At our last parent meeting concern was raised in relation to our school assessment schedule. In particular, but not limited to, Years 7 and 9. It was clearly articulated by parents that there were far too many tasks due within a short period of time, including NAPLAN, and this had a signficant impact on students and their families. I would like to reassure all parents that the school is looking into our Years 7 to 10 assessment schedules for Semester 2 this year, and for all year groups in 2013. The draft 2013 schedule will be presented to parents for comment at the first parent/community meeting in Term 3.

Recently the Textiles and Design/TAS teacher positon was filled by merit selection. Elderslie High School would like to congratulate Ms C Golden on her success to the position. Ms Golden

will commence at the beginning of Term 3. A big thank you must also go to Mrs Lindsay and Ms Wheeler who were outstanding panel members.

There are a number of significant events held this term, one being Parent/Teacher interviews. This year the school is trialing one afternoon/evening, from 3.30pm to 8.30pm. For this to be a success, parents will need to book interview times and teachers will need to keep to set time schedules. It will be a busy event for staff and families. If parents require additional time to the 5 minutes scheduled on the evening to discuss their child’s progress with teachers, they would be best to arrange another time.

Unfortunately at our last P&C meeting there were not enough parents for a quorum, so it was decided to continue with a school report and a question/answer session. Parent evenings such as the one held earlier this term will continue to be advertised on the regular P&C meetings dates and times. It is hoped that during the second meeting in Term 3 the executive positions of the Elderslie High School P&C will be finalised.

I look forward to seeing all Year 7, Year 10 and their parents on Wednesday 20 June 2012 when the Subject Selection Evening for Year 8 and 11, 2013 is held; all parents at our parent/teacher evening on Monday 25 June 2012 and all our musical buffs on 28-30 June to watch our 2012 Musical ‘Singin’ in the Rain’.

BIGGEST MORNING TEA Thank you to Tony Burden and the SRC for organising our Biggest Morning Tea event raising funds for cancer research Elderslie invited Year12, the SRC leaders and staff to get together in the common room for morning tea on Thursday 31st. May. We were delighted that parents and businesses in our local community donated raffle prizes. Special thanks to Enzos Pizzaria Restaurant of Camden, Helen and Con Floros parents of Chris and Coffee Gossip of Narellan. All staff at Elderslie supported this event by attending the morning tea, buying raffle tickets or wearing pink and blue. We raised $1000 –a fantastic effort, well done everyone! M Moore, STLA

TECHNOLOGICAL & APPLIED STUDIES

YEAR 11 COMMUNITY AND FAMILY STUDIES

This Term, Year 11 Community and Family Studies are working on a unit titled “Individuals and Groups”. The assessment task for this unit required the students to research a group they are a member of and present their findings to the class. Many groups were covered including family, friends, dancing, swimming, soccer, running and youth groups. Some very interesting and amusing PowerPoint presentations were shown to the class. The students felt they all know a little more about each other after completing this activity. R Ulrich, CAFS Teacher YEAR 12 COMMUNITY AND FAMILY STUDIES On the 31st of May the Year 12 CAFS classes were fortunate enough to have Jodie Dench, the Community Project Youth Officer at Camden Council came to visit our classes to talk about youth in the Camden area. Jodie gave us useful information on youth services such as the Camden Youth Council and how to access such services. She was really interesting and taught us a lot of things, especially about available youth services that we didn’t know about. We received study notes, Council information on Youth and a Camden service directory. We learnt about innovative places to get employment and access to services such as doctors (medicare) and recreational facilities. At the end of the lesson Jodie invited us to contact her if we ever had a query or wanted to become a member of the Camden Youth Council. YEAR 9 HOODED TOWELS FOR PRE-SCHOOLERS

At the moment in class we have been learning about preschool children and safety issues both indoors and outside. Some of these topics were pool safety and sun safety. Our practical with this unit is to sketch, design and sew a hooded towel in the form of an animal. The towel is suitable for children because being in the form of an animal grabs the child’s attention and they will want to wear it. It is also suitable because children can wear it at the beach and after swimming lessons as it is easy to put on and it keeps them warm and dry. We created the towel by getting two towels, one for the body and the other for the hood of the towel. Next we cut out the shape of the hood with a template and then decorated it with eyes, beaks etc, then we cut into the body of the towel and sewed on the hood. I did a yellow duck with a beak. I had a lot of fun doing this and enjoyed creating the towel. Alex McMurdo

PREMIER’S STUDENT VOLUNTEERING AWARDS May Report

On the 25th May, 2012 the Regional Black Opal (over 150 hours of volunteering) Awards Presentation Breakfast was held at the Bankstown Sports Club. Emily Wilson, Lachlan Bain, James Craven and Nicholas Palmer were presented with their awards by Regional Director, Murat Dizdar. It was amazing to see the variety of volunteering undertaken by all of the 30 students achieving the top award. It is satisfying to have over 40 students currently completing their hours of volunteering but there are many other students not taking advantage of the scheme to add to their resume. We have 70 students refereeing/

umpiring for the PSSA Gala Day and many students helped at our Athletics Carnival. All of our tutors, mentors, SRC, Orchestra and sports helpers should sign up. So if you are in Years 9 or 10 see Mrs Rouen, Ms Zammit, Mr Kafartaris, Tim Hiron or Lachlan Arundall to sign you up and get your hours counted. Mrs Rouen

HUMAN SOCIETY & ITS ENVIRONMENT Year 11 Ancient History Excursion Nicholson Museum, Sydney University

On the 4th of May Mr Raeburn’s and Ms White’s Year 11 Ancient History classes went on an excursion to the Nicholson Museum at Sydney University. (The other two classes had gone the day before). We went because it ties in with our current topic, which is ‘Ancient Egypt’, and also with our previous topic on ‘Archaeology’. On the day we got to experience many things. Besides being on a university campus for the first time, we were able to handle artefacts from different civilisations of the Ancient World, guided by an archaeologist from the university. These artefacts included Egyptian canopic jars, Celtic jewellery, a tomb robber’s lamp, pottery from Pompeii and statues of Egyptian gods. We also went on a tour of the Nicholson Museum, which happens to be on site at the University. We were able to see the largest collection of ancient artefacts in the southern hemisphere. These included mummified human and animal remains (such as a seven year old Egyptian girl, cats and baby crocodiles), Greek vases, ancient weapons and statues of Roman emperors.

DER LAPTOPS Years 9-12 Over the past few weeks I have been notified by staff that an increasing number of students are loading games, movies and excessive amounts of music onto their DER laptops. I would like to remind all students with DER laptops that the User Charter Agreement clearly states that personal use must be kept to a minimum and internet and online communication services is generally used for genuine curriculum and educational activities. The use of unauthorised programs and intentionally downloading unauthorised software, graphics or music that is not associated with learning is not permitted.

To monitor this situation more closely, I will be conducting more regular laptop checks in the coming weeks. Students need to ensure that this material is removed from the laptop, and all school work is backed up on a USB. If any inappropriate material is found on their laptop during a check, I will be required to reimage the laptop and all information will be lost.

Year 9 The Year 9 DER laptop hardware update is rapidly approaching. The laptops were collected during History & Geography lesson period 3 on Tuesday (5th of June). Any student who was absent on the day will need to bring their laptop to me in the library asap. We hope to start returning laptops to students on Wednesday Week 8 (13th of June) and expect that all of Year 9 will have their laptops back by Tuesday Week 9 (19th of June).

Any laptop that does not undergo the update during week 7 will need to be sent away to have this process completed.

WELFARE

Vaccinations Update Next visit by the nurses will be Monday, 6th August. Year 7 will be receiving Varicella (chickenpox) booster PLUS there will be a catch-up for boys for dTpa (diphtheria, tetanus whooping cough) for those who missed their last injections.

Year 10 will also be vaccinated for dTpa. Cards will be issued soon. Please sign them and have your child return it to the Year 10 labelled box in the student office.

REMINDER TO STUDENTS & PARENTS: If students are sick or injured, they must speak with your teacher, get a note and report to sick bay. The office staff will phone your parents if required. DO NOT TEXT OR PHONE YOUR PARENTS YOURSELF.

(RYPEN): ROTARY YOUTH PERSONAL ENRICHMENT Charles McDermott and Zeke Mullins-Tait from EHS were selected to attend a Young Leaders Course at Stanwell Tops. We wish to thank Camden Rotary for sponsoring them both.

It was a great learning experience for the two students, as they met other children from various different schools, and learned from the mentors at the camp, as they told their different life stories and experiences.

Now a word from Charles and Zeke: While we were at the camp we gained leadership and various other skills. During our accommodation stay at Stanwell Tops, we met many different people, who taught us different lessons that can be used regularly in life. These people had accomplished so much in their life, and then passed on their skills to us.

Both Zeke and I would like to express our gratitude towards the Camden Rotary Club. Also, a very big thank you to Mrs Moore for the opportunity. Without both we would not have been able to attend this course.

Overall RYPEN was an extremely fun, enlightening and inspiring experience and we are both very happy that we were able to go and get the most out of it. We feel we have both made some lifelong friends and learned some amazing things.

STUDENT COURSE CHARGES Schedule of payment notices were last week mailed to all families with amounts still outstanding. With almost 2 terms of elective and senior course work now completed the course charges for these subjects are now overdue. Payments can be made at the Student Office between 8.30am and 3.15pm. The following payments options are available, Cash, Cheque EFTPOS/Credit Card. Also for your convenience payments can be accepted over the phone. If parents have difficulty in paying the whole amount, partial payments can be made. Where difficulties exist, please provide a letter briefly outlining the circumstances marked “Private and Confidential” to Mrs Fawcett (Principal). In some circumstances we may be able to provide access to the Student Assistance Scheme. If there are any problems with the schedule of payments/invoices eg. Incorrect elective course, then please contact the student Administration Office as soon as possible so that the necessary amendment/s can be made and a corrected invoice issued.

NSW CHS STATE SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

The positive morale of our competitors was great to see, with the majority of swimmers competing to their ability and some achieving person bests along the way. We achieved 3 Gold Medals, 6 Silver Medals and 5 Bronze Medals. In the overall school point score we continued our great success from last year and finished in FOURTH (4th) place. However, Elderslie High was crowned

champion school in the girls Pointscore. Well done to all our female swimmers. Brittany Stoker was awarded the Eyeline Encouragement Award for her overall effort and teamwork.

The withdrawal of a few competitors required a number of changes to our relay teams so a very big Thank you to those who filled in and performed well. Finally, thanks to all the parent support throughout the 3 very long days and for all your efforts at our previous carnivals, it is much appreciated. Again, Congratulations to all swimmers and wishing you all continued future success.

U13 GIRLS’ REPRESENTATIVE HOCKEY

Two EHS students, Natalie Cull (Yr8) and Abbey Smith (Yr7), represented Macarthur at the Campbelltown City Women’s Hockey Association Annual Junior Carnival recently in the Under 13 Division 1 team (See picture below) where they played teams from Newcastle, Goulburn, Sydney, Campbelltown and Illawarra. They were successful in winning the carnival for their age group/division after a riveting final which went into extra time, then after still drawing went to penalty strokes and then sudden death strokes. The girls will be representing the region again in July at the State Championships in Grafton.

GIFTED AND TALENTED PROGRAM The Year 9 Gifted and Talented students, in conjunction with Mr Burke and the VET Entertainment students prepared an entry in the Great Schools Showoff competition. Very soon you will be able to view this entry on our School Website. Congratulations to all who were involved in this project.

It is now time to welcome fifteen Year 7 students into the Gifted and Talented program for 2012. The Teacher Nomination process is happening at the moment. Students will be notified very soon if they are to be invited to join this program.

Twelve boys from the Year 7 and 8 Gifted and Talented program will be participating in Mind Marathon on Friday, 31 August 2012. Many of the students from the Gifted and Talented program will be participating in Tournament of the Minds later in the year. Details about these events will be available very soon through the Daily Notices.

Debating and Public Speaking Update

The Plain English Speaking Award is an annual event held by The Arts Unit. The competition was held on Friday, 4 May 2012 at Elderslie High School. This year Caitlin Hooper and Suzanna Moschetti from Year 12 represented Elderslie High School in the competition. Caitlin won this event and went on to also win the Regional Final on the 23 May 2012 at The Arts Unit, Lewisham. Good luck to Caitlin in the State semi-final on Friday, 15 June, 2012.

Brooke Murray and Lachlan Macdonald from Year 9 were selected to host the VIP Showcase of the South Western Sydney Dance Festival during Week 4 of this term. Congratulations to Brooke and Lachlan!

Good luck to Lauren Franek and William Bancroft from Year 11 in the Quota Club of Camden’s Student of the Year event.

Congratulations to the Year 12 Debating team, consisting of Suzanna Moschetti, Alicia Sullivan, Kahli Bailey and Mitchell Christie on their win over John Edmondson High School in Round 3. The Year 12 team has now won the zone and is waiting to move through to the Regional Quarter-Final in the next week.

Unfortunately the Year 11 Debating team, consisting of Claire Meikle, Clair Garrity, Jennifer Freeman and Isabella Wisniewska were narrowly defeated in Round 1. Good luck in Rounds 2 and 3 in the coming weeks.

The Year 9 and 10 Debating teams participated in a Debating Workshop on Friday, 25 May 2012 in preparation for their first round against Elizabeth Macarthur High School. Good luck Years 9 and 10!

The Year 7 and 8 Debating team will begin training in the next few weeks. Good luck to all of our teams in the weeks to come!!!

CAPA Update

The Creative and Performing Arts Polo Shirts and Singlets are now available in all sizes from the Studio. Students must pay at the student office and present their receipt to Ms Dennis in the studio to collect their Polo Shirt/Singlet. Polo Shirts are $25.00 and Singlets are $15.00.

The Year 7, 8 and 9 Drama students attended a performance of Romeo and Juliet on Thursday, 24 May 2012 at the Sydney Opera House. The students had a great time taking in the sights of Sydney and enjoying a fabulous presentation of this much loved Shakespearean play.

Later this term the Year 10 Dance class and members of the Year 10 Drama class will be competing in the Regional Final of the Shakespeare Festival. They will be presenting



pieces for the Mash up, Monologue and Movement sections. Good luck to all!

Congratulations to the Dance Company, Dance Ensemble and Junior and Senior Ballroom Dance Ensemble on gaining selection for the South Western Sydney Dance Festival. The students performed very well and represented Elderslie High School with pride.

We are also pleased to announce that Elderslie High School has been successful in gaining 12 places in the Combined Dance section for Schools Spectacular 2012. Stay tuned for more information!

The Dance Transition Program with Mawarra, Cobbitty and Elderslie Public Schools is in full swing, with two of our four rehearsals complete we are well and truly on our way to creating a fabulous routine for the Sydney Eisteddfod on Sunday, 29 July 2012 at the Science Theatre, UNSW. The Dance Ensemble and Dance Company will also be competing in this event. Permission notes are due to the box in the Studio by Wednesday, 18 July 2012.

The Year 8, 9, 10 Dance Elective classes, the Dance Company and Ensemble will be competing at the Dance Blitz Eisteddfod on Sunday, 26 August 2012 at Ambarvale High School. Permission notes will be available soon.

Congratulations to Taylor Boys from Year 8, Kara Valente and Brittany Smith from Year 10 who have been selected to attend the Senior State Dance Camp which will be held at Sydney Dance Company Studios from 12 – 15 June 2012. Well done girls!

The Year 10 Drama students will be attending a performance of Hamlet on Tuesday, 19 June 2012 at the Seymour Theatre Centre. The students will gain a much clearer understanding of this engaging Shakespearean play. Permission notes and money are due to the Student Office ASAP. The CAPA Faculty has booked tickets to attend an evening performance of Legally Blonde, The Musical on Tuesday, 20 November 2012. If your child is a CAPA student and is interested in attending the excursion, permission notes are available from the Studio. Hurry or you might miss out!
