    JUNE 1971

  • ACADEMIC DRESS

Academic dress stems from the Middle Ages, when scholars were alsoclerics and wore the costume of the monastic orders. The hood was originallya cowl attached to the gown and could be slipped over the head for warmth. The cap, originally round, later became a square mortar-board.

Today the cap is the same for all degrees, except that the tassels forDoctors are often gold. The gown varies for the respective degrees: the Bachelor'sgown is worn closed and has long pointed sleeves; the Master's gown is wornopen and the forearms protrude through slits in the elbows of the sleeves; andthe Doctor's gown has sleeves which are full and bell-shaped and carry threehorizontal bars; a velvet panel is draped around the neck and stitched downthe front edges. The velvet panel and velvet sleeve bars of the Doctor's gownare either black or the same color as the velvet border of the hood.

The hood is lined with silk of the colors of the institution which grantedthe degree. Our faculty members have taken degrees at a wide variety ofinstitutions. Some of the colors of the hoods, seen today will be the following:

Blue, two gold chevrons: University of California; Purple and gold: SanFrancisco State College; Red and White: California State College at Hayward;Blue: Yale; Light blue, white chevron: Columbia; Old gold: Iowa; Violet: NewYork; Cardinal, blue chevron: Pennsylvania: Carnelian, 2 white chevrons: Cornell;Purple, gold chevron: Northwestern; Navy, maize chevron: Michigan; Green,2 white chevrons: Michigan State; Blue, 2 orange chevrons: Illinois.

The hood also varies for the respective degrees, the Doctor's being thelongest and of fuller shape than the others. It is usually bordered with velvet, the color of which indicates the kind of degree: blue, philosophy; brown, finearts or architecture; green, medicine; orange, engineering; pink, music; purple, law; scarlet, divinity or theology; white, arts or letters; yellow (golden), scienceor science in engineering; light blue, education.

    Let It Be

When I find myself in times of troubleMother Mary comes to me,Speaking words of wisdom - Let it be.And in my hour of darknessShe is standing right in front of me,Speaking words of wisdom - Let it be.

Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be,Whisper words of wisdom, let it be ...

And when the broken hearted peopleLiving in the world agreeThere will be an answer - Let it be.For though they may be partedThere is still a chance that they will see. There will be an answer - Let it be.

Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be,There will be an answer, let it be ...

And when the night is cloudyThere is still a light that shines on meShine until tomorrow - Let it be.I wake up to the sound of musicMother Mary comes to me,Speaking words of wisdom - Let it be.

Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be,There will be an answer, let it be.

    * IX. Hymn of The People

    People Got To Be Free

All the world over, it's so easy to see, people ev'rywhere just wanna be free.Listen, please Iisten, that's the way it

should be,peace in the valley, people got to be free.

You should see what a lovely, lovely worldthis would be,

if everyone learned to live together.Seems to me, such an easy, easy thing it

should be,Why can't you and me learn to love one

    another?

All the world over, it's so easy to seepeople ev'rywhere just wanna to be free. Can't understand, it's so simple to me,people ev'rywhere just got to be free.

If there's a man who is down and needs ahelpin' hand,

all it takes is you to understand and topull him through.

Seems to me, we got to solve it individually. And I'll do unto you what you do to me.

They'll be shoutin' from the mountain on outto the sea,

no two ways about it, people have to be free.Ask me my opinion, my opinion will be,it's a nat'ral situation for a man to be free.

Oh what a feel in' just come over me,it's enough to move a mountain, make a blind

man see.Ev'rybody's dancin', come on let's go see, there's peace in the valley, now we all can

    be free.

Look, see that train over there? Now tnat's the train of freedom, it's about

to arrive any minute now.You know it's been long overdue,Look out 'cause it's comin' right on through.

("People Got To Be Free" by Cavaliere & Brigati)
