Message from Doug HendersonDIRECTOR OF SAANICH PARKS & RECREATION

Come celebrateall Sunfest has to offer!

The excitement begins Monday, July 1st with the 15th Annual Gorge Canada Day Picnic. The picnic runs 8:30 am to 4:00 pm along the Gorge Waterway. Returning to the picnic will be the pancake breakfast, family parade, entertainment, kids activities, canoe rides, buskers, Strawberry Tea, market and more.

With construction of the new Craigfl ower Bridge scheduled to start in July the Gorge on Art event will be incorporated into the Canada Day event on Monday, July 1st. Gorge on Art features a wide range of local artists displaying artwork along the beautiful Gorge Waterway.

For 47 years, Strawberry Festival has been a summer highlight for many. This year it runs 11:00 am to 3:00 pm at Beaver Lake Park on Sunday, July 7th. Dont miss the pony rides, arts & crafts, interactive sports and games, as well as; information displays, live entertainment, pie eating contest, and a model boat display. Dont forget to indulge in a little summer sweetness with the traditional serving of strawberries and ice cream at 2:00 pm for the unbeatable price of $0.50.

Quickly becoming a MUST for Sunfest participants is one of the newest additions to Sunfest - the Cadboro Bay Festival. Running Sunday, August 11th 11:00 am to 3:00 pm this festival features: giant sand sculptures, hands on activities, arts and crafts, bouncy castles, pirate school and treasure hunt, information displays, together with food and fun for the entire family.

Another summer favourite is the Music in the Park series featuring a variety of evening concerts played at local parks. The concerts run Tuesdays in July and August from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. With a range of musical styles sure to suit all ages, settle in, bring your picnic dinner, or purchase available food and enjoy the shows. All parks have a childrens playground and some events include other childrens activities as well as local information, displays and produce.

Other Sunfest events include: Gordon Head Recreation Centre/Lambrick Park Skate Jam, Quadra Cedar Hill Associations Fun in the Park; Fun Day in the Park fundraiser for the

Crohns and Colitis Foundation; The Arts and Music in the Gardens; Walk

with Volkssport and many more great events!

Use these amazing opportunities to collect your family, friends and

neighbours and celebrate your community. Please join me in thanking

Saanich Council for their support, and in recognizing the many community volunteers

and groups and the Saanich Parks & Recreation staff who work hard to make Sunfest so enjoyable.

Joy!Fun Sun Fact:There have been studies that show that depression occurs in people during the change of seasons. As winter approaches and the earth tilts away from the sun, the days become shorter. This means less sunlight is available for our use. Many people fi nd themselves depressed at this time of year, and the cause has been linked to the lack of sunlight.

JILLIAN HARRIS MEET AND GREETIt seemed to all start with a quick appearance on the Bachelor and then on the Bachelorette, but before all that, I wasnt just a hot tub expert, I was a designer! With a love for restaurants, food, design, fashion, family & friends - I love to take on life with every little ounce of energy my 52 frame has! Post Bachelorette, I was blessed with some career opportunities, like landing a spot as a designer on Extreme Makeover, Home Edition. This sparked my creativity back up, and I realized how much I loved to design AND help others all at once.UPTOWNSaturday, July 27 11:00 am 2:00 pm Free

Fun Sun Fact:It takes the light of the sun eight minutes to reach

us, and still it is only a fraction of the powerful heat generated by our star. Without the light of the sun,

there would not be any life on earth. There would be no star to orbit and no heat to sustain us. In short, without the life giving light of the sun, we would be a species lost. In fact, we would not even exist.
