Welcome to the family of God and!Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church!!

Question of the Week! What is humility?!

!

TO DISCOVER the essentials of humility, you have to experiment with selfemptying and change the channel from yourself to the Ultimate Other. When you begin with God and not with yourself, your perspective on reality does a dramatic shift. God’s will comes first. “Not my will, but yours be done,” as Jesus prays in the Garden of Gethsemane. The radical humility of the Son of God is echoed in the submission of his mother to that same divine will in the story of the Annunciation: “Let it be done to me according to your word.”!

!

Life itself has its genesis in Godhence the name of the Bible’s first book. When you choose the perspective of a humble heart, you become aware that your proper orientation as a creature should be one of obediencethat is, attentive listeningto God’s call rather than egoistic selfdetermination. It’s precisely the attitude of obedience that led to the salvation of the world, as Saint Paul says in his letter to the community at Philippi: “[Jesus] humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross.” Paul explains that humility means putting other people ahead of yourself, thinking of their needs rather than monologuing about yours. !

Special Baptism Anniversary Celebration

On Sunday, June 24, at the 9:30 am Liturgy, our parish will be celebrating a baptism anniversary Mass for anyone,

child or adult, who was baptized in the past year. Dur-ing the Mass there will be a blessing extended to those members of the community who are celebrating this special milestone. Following Mass there will be a re-ception in the parish hall at which time the participants will receive a small gift to help them remember their “first birthday” in the church.!

! We want to offer our Congratulations and Best Wishes to Mrs. Carol Roaf, our second grade teacher, who will be retiring at the end of this school year. Mrs. Roaf has been teaching at Sacred Heart School for 30 years. We will miss her so much! For your dedication and hard work, you deserve the best retirement ever. Enjoy every moment!!!!

Congratulations to the High School Graduates of 2018

We as a parish want to confer on each of our graduating seniors a blanket. It symbolizes the warmth that we hope you experienced here at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Parish, a warmth that is indeed an expression of God’s Spirit alive and among us. We hope that you will use this blanket on your bed whether you stay home or go away, so that whether you go to sleep or rise, you will remember the community that introduced you to the Faith, that taught you to pray, to love, to serve and to sacrifice. Some nights you may feel alone or isolated, but feelings are not facts. The most Holy Trinity is with you and we as the community that bears God’s name continues as a concrete reminder of that presence. We will pray for you and watch eagerly for your return.!!

“Fathers are often blind to the universal inclination of children to imitate them. Our children are always watching our actions, even when we are not aware of it. When my youngest son was two years old, my wife Karen found pennies in his dirty diapers. My son had observed that I put money in my wallet and then stuck it in my back pocket. Since he had no wallet or pocket, he just stuck loose change he found around the house down the back of his diaper.” ! Steve Wood, Legacy

!

Happy Father’s Day! !

Years ago my own young son refused to drink from his sippy cup unless it first went into the microwave. After a while, I realized that he was watching me place my coffee mug in the microwave and then drinking it. So as a solution, I would place his sippy cup in the microwave for something like 3 seconds. My son would watch and wait for the “beep” indicating it was done. I would pull out the sippy cup, upon which my son would happily drink from it. Our kids are watching us! ! Saint Pope John Paul II, watching his own dad growing up, described it as his “first seminary.” John Paul II grew up during World War II and then under the Communist occupation of Poland. His dad was a general in the Polish army. John Paul, as a young boy, recalled waking up in the middle of the night and often seeing his dad on his knees in prayer. That image and example made a deep and lasting impression on the future pope. As fathers, we have both the privilege and responsibility of forming our children and grandchildren in the faith. Since our actions often speak louder than our words, let me offer three simple suggestions for you on this Father’s Day: !

! Thank God for all the men who have been “Father Figures” in your life. Each of us is here and the men we are because of the men the Lord has placed in our lives, who have helped to form us and modeled for us what it means to be men, husbands, and fathers. Take a moment to thank God for each of these men! !

! Bless your kids/grandkids. When you put your kids to bed or when they or the grandkids leave the house, give them a blessing. The Bible has numerous examples of fathers blessing their children. This can be as simple as making the sign of the cross on their forehead when you give them a hug and a kiss goodnight or goodbye. !

! Pray. Each night before you go to bed, add this simple prayer, “Lord, help me to be the man You want me to be.” If you are a husband and a father, add these as well, “Help me to be the husband and father You want me to be.” Watch this prayer, and your openness to letting the Lord help you, strengthen you to be everything He is calling you to be. May God bless all of you this Father’s Day! !

!

An Update from the Office of Evangelization, Catechesis, Marriage &

Family Life Pope Francis calls for the Church to embark on a “path of pastoral and missionary conversion which can-not leave things as they presently are” (“Evangelii Gaudium,” 25). Specifically, he calls for the Church to raise up missionary disciples, filled with the joy of the Gospel. ! Following are a few examples of the Diocese of Burlington’s efforts to respond to the Pope’s call. !!

Institute for Missionary Discipleship: !Lay Formation Program ! Missionary disciples are men and women who know how to sit at the feet of Jesus (disciples) and are equipped and inspired to go out into the world (missionaries). The 22 men and woman from around the state in this inaugural twoyear formation program are being formed with spiritual, intellectual and pastoral tools to take back to their parishes and ministries. Applications for the second class will be available in spring 2019. !!

Parish Staff & Volunteer Retreats ! The past few popes have taken their Curia staffs for a week long retreat each Lent. Instructing the retreatants to leave their work at the office, the retreat gives them the opportunity to “come away for a time with the Lord.” This year the Office of Evangelization & Catechesis made this a possibility for our parish staffs and volunteers. Two retreat days were held, one at St Jude Parish in Hinesburg and one at Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish in Ludlow. Both retreats reflected on Pope Francis’ exhortation “The Joy of the Gospel” and how we are to live this joy as missionary disciples in our pastoral ministries. The retreats will be-come an annual offering. !!

PreCana ! The Church has called us to evaluate how we prepare couples for the Sacrament of Marriage. The Diocese has carefully prepared a new formation process designed to equip couples in the spiritual and human skills necessary for marriage in today’s world. One part of that shift was to move a portion of the formation to an online platform. Taking advantage of the next generation’s comfort with online learning and considering the fact that roughly 1/3 of the Catholic marriages in Vermont are destination weddings, this is a helpful approach. In addition, a retreat day is offered to the couples in order to give them the opportunity to set a foundation of praying and reading the Scriptures together. Couples receive a blessed Crucifix, and the Church’s formal “blessing for engaged couples.” !

Continued at the top of the next column !

Update continued…...!

!Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist ! At the invitation of the Diocese, the Franciscan Sisters have established a mission presence in Vermont. This vibrant community of women, based out of Meriden, CT has a strong focus on bringing the sacred into the secular world. Their presence has already been a gift at the UVM Catholic Center, at numerous vocations events around the diocese and as a part of our new Diocesan Lay Formation Program. In addition to their primary ministries, the sisters are available to speak at parishes, schools, religious education programs and other gatherings. !!

Other Initiatives ! The first ever Diocesan Men’s conference was held on February 17 and, like the Annual Women’s Retreat, will be a yearly event. We are in our second year of of-fering the Adult Confirmation Program which culminates with Confirmation administered by Bishop Coyne on Pentecost. Parish and regional workshops are offered regularly by the Office of Worship for our lectors and other ministers. Parish missions, retreats and workshops are being offered regularly throughout the state. !!

All of these initiatives are only possible through the generosity of the Bishop’s Appeal and the goodwill and prayers of the faithful in the Diocese of Burlington. !

It is with a heavy heart that I am writing my last bulletin writeup for this ministry. ! I turned in my resignation in May, and will soon be done as the coordinator for HIS Pantry. It is time for me to step away and let a new coordinator, or core team, take on the upcoming new location. I am grateful to have volunteered in this position for over 5 years, as I have had over 15 years as a volunteer with this minis-try. ! Due to the changes in the economy over the years for our community, HIS Pantry has grown and changed to meet the demand. This ministry is more than just helping with food. We also minister to those searching for a connection, whether in faith or just in seeing God’s love outpoured for them so as to want to know God. ! I could not have been able to do my position with-out the undeniable dedication of the volunteers over the years. They see Christ in the hungry. They made the guests feel like they belonged (sometimes that is all someone needs to feel wanted). This ministry also has the unwavering support of our parishioners who donate, in kind or monetarily. It is what helps to meet the high demands for people to make their food make the month. Add in the community donations and you have a smoother running operation. This all sent posi-tive ripples out into our community, which extended into our bordering states and throughout Bennington County. ! Thank you for your support over the years, whether in prayer or in person, as you have made it such an en-riching experience for me. I am truly humbled. May the new location and new vision keep God’s love the focus of HIS Pantry ‘Seeing Christ in the hungry’.!!
