HOPE AND FORGIVENESS There were some interesting conceptions of sin prevalent in the time of the He-brew scriptures. There was the belief that God punished sin immediately. Those who suffered disease or misfor-tune were, therefore, sinners getting their due from the Almighty. Today's first reading hints at another kind of God. When David admits his sin, Nathan declares, "The LORD on his part has forgiven your sin" (2 Samuel 12:13b). Here was not a vengeful God but a merciful God. What good news that must have been to David and those who, like him, could be honest enough to admit their sinfulness! Jesus is the good news of God's mercy and forgiveness incarnate. Without Je-sus, perhaps the good news would have been too good to believe, too difficult to imagine. But there he is in today's Gos-pel, the God-man, forgiving a sinner and declaring that she is forgiven because of her great love. Our Parish Centennial Corner “Honoring and Caring for the Elderly”

Pope Francis on March 5, 2015 addressed members of the Pontifical Academy for Life. Palliative care, he said, “is an expression of the properly human attitude of taking care of one another, especially of those who suffer. It bears witness that the human person is always precious, even if marked by age and sickness.” Pope Francis also spoke of the duty of honouring the elderly, which he associated with the biblical commandment to honour one’s parents. On the contrary, he said, the Bible has a stern warning for those who neglect or mistreat their parents. This judgement applies today when parents, “having become older and less useful, are marginalized to the point of abandonment.” The Pope explained that “to honour” can be understood in our day “as the duty to have extreme respect and to take care of those who, because of their physical or social condition, could be left to die, or ‘made to die’.” (Vatican Radio) Centennial Picnic Tickets Available Tickets ($5 each) are available after Masses. ESPERANZA Y PERDÓN Había algunas concepciones interesantes sobre el pecado que prevalecían en la época de las Escrituras hebreas. Estaba la creencia de que Dios castigaba inme-diatamente el pecado. Los que sufrían alguna enfermedad o desgracia eran, por lo tanto, pecadores que recibían su mere-cido del Todopoderoso. La primera lectura de hoy nos muestra a otro tipo de Dios. Cuando David admite su pecado, Natán declara: "El Señor te perdona tu pecado" (2 Samuel 12:13b). Aquí no hay un Dios vengativo sino un Dios misericordioso. ¡Qué buena nueva debe haber sido eso para David y para los que, como él, eran lo suficientemente honestos como para admitir su pecado! Jesús es la buena nueva de la misericor-dia y el perdón de Dios hecho carne. Sin Jesús, quizás la buena nueva hubiera sido demasiado buena como para creerla, demasiado difícil de imaginar. Pero allí está en el Evangelio de hoy, el Dios-hombre, perdonando a una pecado-ra y declarando que está perdonada debi-do a su gran amor. ¡Hay esperanza, entonces, para el resto de nosotros pecadores, si tan sólo ama-mos lo suficiente! Trái tim của vị Mục Tử Nhân Hậu Trái Tim của vị Mục Tử Nhân Lành không chỉ là con tim bày tỏ lòng thương xót chúng ta, mà là chính lòng thương xót. Nơi đó, tình yêu của Chúa Cha chiếu tỏa rạng người; nơi đó, tôi biết mình được đón nhận và con người chân thực của tôi được hiểu; nơi đó, với tất cả những giới hạn và tội lỗi của mình, tôi biết chắc mình được tuyển chọn và yêu thương. Khi chiêm ngắm Trái Tim ấy, tình yêu ban đầu của tôi được đổi mới: nhớ lại lúc Chúa đánh động tâm hồn và gọi tôi theo Ngài, nhớ lại niềm vui được thả lưới cuộc đời theo Lời Chúa (Xem Lc 5,5).

Trái Tim vị Mục Tử Nhân Lành nói với chúng ta rằng tình yêu của Chúa không có giới hạn, không mệt mỏi và không bao giờ đầu hàng. Nơi đó chúng ta thấy Chúa liên tục hiến mình, không giới hạn; nơi đó chúng ta tìm được nguồn mạch tình yêu trung tín và dịu dàng mang lại tự do và giải thoát con người; nơi đó chúng ta tái khám phá Chúa Giêsu yêu thương chúng ta “cho đến cùng” (Ga 13,1), nhưng không bao giờ áp đặt.
