BLOCK ISLAND TRIP June 1 - June 2, 2007 Hi folks. I am delighted to announce that once again I have re- served some rooms at the Surf Hotel on Block Island. If you've already been, I don't have to tell you a thing. For the newcom- ers, you must visit this tiny jewel to appreciate its beauty, charm and peace. You'll know you have arrived when you pass by the Wild Rose bushes in bloom with the harbor beyond as you take the short walk from the ferry landing to the Surf. It is nothing short of a time and space warp to be transformed from the busy hubbub of mainland life to the sweet world on the Block. Here we bike ride and hike to take in the island's beauty, roller blade, read on the oversized porch, sunbathe on the beach, shop in the village, rent mopeds, and have our very own TGIF on the back deck each afternoon. It's a tough week- end, and not everyone can handle this unhurried pace. The cost of 2 nights, 2 breakfasts, tax and chambermaid tip are about $120 to $170 a person depending on room. There are various dining establishments from the lively hall of Ballard’s to quiet and charming spots. Afterwards there are various entertainments from guitar playing to a dance place or two, all easy walks from the Surf. We carpool about 3 1/2 hours to Point Judith, Rhode Island where clean, modern ferries float us for the hour journey to this nearby Fantasy Island. So start thinking about it, talk to me or others about it, but don't wait too long to decide, as the Surf is getting booked earlier and earlier. Right now I have rooms for about 24 peo- ple and a $75 per person check made to myself, will reserve you a spot. Call or e-mail if you'd like me to send you my 3 page write-up. I will go after more rooms as needed. Contact: Bob 'Morty' Morton 894-7405(w) 226-3541(h) 5 Budd Lane, LaGrangeville, NY 12540 [email protected]

    BLOCK ISLAND TRIP

    June 1 - June 2, 2007

Hi folks. I am delighted to announce that once again I have re-served some rooms at the Surf Hotel on Block Island. If you've already been, I don't have to tell you a thing. For the newcom-ers, you must visit this tiny jewel to appreciate its beauty, charm and peace. It's a tough week-end, and not everyone can handle this unhurried pace. The cost of 2 nights, 2 breakfasts, tax and chambermaid tip are

about $120 to $170 a person depending on room.

There are various dining establishments from the lively hall of Ballard’s to quiet and charming spots. Afterwards there are various entertainments from guitar playing to a dance place or

two, all easy walks from the Surf.

We carpool about 3 1/2 hours to Point Judith, Rhode Island where clean, modern ferries float us for the hour journey to

    this nearby Fantasy Island.

So start thinking about it, talk to me or others about it, but don't wait too long to decide, as the Surf is getting booked earlier and earlier. Welcome to the following new members!

SUMMER MEETING SCHEDULE This year much as Daylight Savings Time has started

early, so has the HVSC Summer Schedule.

Beginning April 4, meetings will be held only once a month on the first Wednesday of each month, starting at 8:00 PM. We resume the normal first and third Wednesday schedule

    in September.

Nine ways to kill a ski club (By Lora Seale, president Altair ski club)

    1. Don’t participate beyond paying your dues. Let “them” handle things, and then complain that members have no voice with

    this group.

    2. Decline all offices and committee ap-pointments- you are too busy- then offer vociferous advice on how “they” should do

    things.

    3. If appointed to a committee, don’t work- it’s a courtesy appointment- then

complain because the club has stagnated.

    4. If you do attend meetings, don’t initiate new ideas, then you can play “devils advo-

cate” to the ideas submitted by others.

    5. Don’t rush to pay your dues- they’re too high anyway- then complain about poor

    financial management.

    6. Don’t encourage others to become members- that’s selling. Then complain that

    membership is not growing.

    7. Don’t read the newsletter- it’s not im-portant. Then complain that you’re not kept

    informed.

    8. Don’t volunteer your talents- that’s ego-fulfillment. Then complain that you’re never

    asked or never appreciated.

    9. And if by chance the club grows in spite of your contributions, grasp every opportu-nity to tell the “ youngsters” how tough it was and how hard you worked in the old days to bring the club to its’ present level of

    success.

  • Another ski season is winding down. I should be happy to see things turn green since my business depends on it, but I’m always sad to see the snow melt away. My carefree days become filled with phone calls, estimates and pressure. A quiet day in the woods is now filled with the sound of blowers, chippers and vacuums. Our club also goes through a period of change as we complete the activities organized months ago and

begin making new plans. There are a lot of great things about our club, but we recognize that it can always be better. In fact, we have to evolve to stay relevant. A few people have responded to my request for new ideas and suggestions and we have tried to implement some of them. Three areas of concern that some of us have are the growing cost of the dinner/dances, the lack of support for ski activities (which is curious since we are a ski club) and

meetings. Regarding the first one we will be joining the Trailsweepers for our Halloween dance to divvy up the expenses between a larger number of people as well as having the added benefit of partying with a bunch of fun-loving skiers. The holiday dance will be held at the Best Western since it is part of the deal that allows us such a nice meeting venue for such a

    Evolution

    r e a s o n a b l e a m o u n t o f money. They take good care of us and I am very happy with the setup that Jeff created during his presidency.

The spring dance for 2008 is the next opportunity to

make some changes. Improving support for ski activities is a different story. Everyone knows that my orientation is to XC and I am working on things to that end. We should spend at least as much on skiing stuff as we do for the dances. If you have an idea you should express it at a meeting or talk with an officer or board member about it. We need your

help to make things happen. The third concern regards your actual physical participation. In an attempt to make the club more accessible we have by default created almost a virtual club. Whereas in the past you had to attend a meeting to know what was going on now you can do almost everything from your computer and many are deciding that they don’t need to attend meetings. There are other factors as well but the net result is that the HVSC as well as all t ypes o f c lubs are experiencing this scenario. Sure you can get most of what you need from the website but if you rely on just that you are missing an

DINING OUT The Dubliner Irish Pub

The restaurant near the corner of Main and Raymond has undergone another Anglo-Teutonic dining transformation. The former Old Brauhaus, then Dickens English Pub & Tea Garden is now The Dubliner

    Irish Pub.

Brendan Daly, a native of Dublin, Ireland, has created an authentic piece of Dublin City right here in Poughkeepsie. Chef George is a Culinary

    Institute of America graduate.

Before one HVSC meeting three HVSC members (Bob Ulrich, HVSC past president David Allen and myself) had a “boys’ night out” dinner at the

    Pub.

The nice thing about being the first one to arrive is that it gives you time for a mug of Irish draught (Smithwick’s Ale at $4.50) and a chat with the barmaid. Note that in Irish, when pronouncing the name Smithwick’s, the 'W' is silent. In the US the pre fe rred pronunciation is “smi’-thikz”; in Canada, “smid’-dikz”. But I

    digress.

Once all three arrived, we were seated at a table in the lounge. The old booths and partitions in the bar lounge are gone,

revealing the larger room with a variety of seating arrangements. Some might find it less cozy than the old setting, but I like the openness of the room. The dining

    room behind the bar remains.

Dinner salads and a plate of very warm Irish soda bread preceded the meal. We also shared a few appetizers of Galway Crab Cakes (six small cakes, easy for 3 guys to share, for $9.95) and Coconut Shrimp (five for $8.95, not as easy

    to share, but we managed).

For entrees Bob and David each had the Irish Shepherd’s Pie ($12.95) and I enjoyed “Irish Trinity” Ribs ($17.95), so named for being prepared with three of Ireland’s most famous exports, Guinness Stout, Harp Lager and Smithwick’s

    Ale.

David found the Shepherd’s Pie to be “very Irish and very good!” My baby ribs were very tender and meaty without being greasy; the flavor was also to my liking – sweet

and tangy and not overly spicy.

With time running short before the meeting (and with out stomachs full)

    we forewent desert and coffee.

There was a wide range of prices – may of the entrees were in the low teens, while some of the steak dishes were in the high twenties and low thirties. You should be able to

find a dish for any pocketbook.

I also noticed in the time we were there the crowd expanded from nearly empty to quite busy and this was a Wednesday. I imagine Friday and Saturday nights might entail a

    wait.

else that we’re working on. Lastly we have our annual elections coming up on April 4 and it looks like we will have a familiar slate. I know that a couple of people will continue in their capacity, because they feel an obligation to help; but, if you want to take over for them next year, they would be very happy to help you learn the ropes. If you have never offered your talents to the club or if it has been a while,

please consider doing so. Most positions do not require

important component of our family- personal contact. At the very least being around such energetic people motivates you when you need a push (like when there is no snow in your yard). I have tried to make the meetings more entertaining and informative and if that’s not enough there is always lift ticket lotto and if that is still not enough we’ll have the bartender get you another drink. I believe that meetings have to become more of an event, more special. One way to do that is to have fewer of them, so we will be eliminating one meeting in April and one in May. Perhaps in the future we’ll whittle away at them

some more. The HVSC is a really great club. The energy and enthusiasm of the members continues to inspire me. It has become another family for Elizabeth and me. We look forward to events and being around our friends. We have a very impressive website and newsletter- have you compared them to the normal fare? We meet at a really nice place that makes you feel proud to go to. We have a great variety of

  • TRIP COMMITTEE MEETING April 4 at 6:30 PM

The Trip Committee would like to thank everyone again for a successful ski season. It seemed like the snow would never come!! Mike Harelick and Terri Searle are veteran trip lead-ers and did an incredible job organizing and leading our western trips. A special thank you goes to Susan Hasbrouck who was kind enough to step in at the last minute to lead the Jay Peak trip. Reports on all the trips were good and we look

    forward to the 2008 season.

Our weekend trips ran a wee bit shy of snow. The Stratton Holiday trip was cancelled do to lack of snow and will be rescheduled for December 2007. Mark Booska had a good number of sign ups so we hope eve-

    ryone will sign up again.

Although there was no snow for the Gore trip it was a great weekend and if we had that much fun without snow then there are no limits when there is snow. Shirley Rinaldi did such a great job that we have already

crowned her leader for the Third Annual Gore Tour.

The committee is getting information and making plans for next season. We are having an open meeting be-fore the regular membership meeting on April 4 at 6:30 p.m. We will be discussing the two major trips for 2008 and thought we would try something new this year by inviting interested members to attend.

    DINING OUT Lenahan and Lopez

    (formally PJ McGlynn’s)

Route 9 North, just south of Red Hook.

    Reservations: 845-758-3102

This is a quaint Tavern/Pub style restaurant on Route 9 North as you approach the Village of Red Hook. Pat and I consider it one of our favorite valley restaurants. We usually go about 2 to 3 times a month whenever we cross the river to take in a film at the Upstate or Lyceum theaters. As you enter you can choose to turn right into the restaurant portion where you’ll find rustic private booths or left into the tavern which has both booths and tables with views of flat screen HD TVs behind and at one end of the bar for sport viewing from anywhere in the room. Also in the tavern is a roaring fireplace that is active most winter nights which provides additional warmth and ambiance for a cozy dining experience. Pat and I try to opt for the couples

    booth opposite the fireplace.

The real treat is the excellent and reasonably priced food (entrees from mid teens to low twenties). If you like lamb then this is the place to go as they feature lamb from their own farm in Clermont and some of their neighbors’ farms. Every weekend they run specials priced from $17 to $22 on one or more lamb dishes including lamb chops, roast lamb and lamb shanks. These are so good I often have a hard time trying to opt for something different on the menu. Fortunately, we go often enough that I can say that the steak entrees are wonderful too. I especially like the Steak McGlynn ($14.99) done with garlic tarragon butter and the Herb Roast Pork Loin ($13.99). Their homemade applesauce is some of the best I’ve had and I often order it as a substitute side dish in lieu of fries when I get one of their great burgers. My favorite appetizers are the one-pound tender steamed baby clams served in a garlic clam broth with drawn butter and the fried Calamari with marinara sauce at $9.99 and $8.99, respectively. Also I should mention that you can add a great mixed greens or Caesar salad to any

entree for just $1.99. Just to cover everyone’s tastes they also have seafood and pasta dishes for every palate and the desserts are reasonably priced

    as well.

Last year they changed the restaurant’s name and changed the menu to include a variety of Mexican dishes. This works out great for me and Pat as she loves Mexican food while I prefer the old standards. Pat particularly likes the Enchilada De Jaiba a soft tortilla filled with crab meat, topped with tomatillo sauce and rice with black bean paste ($13.99) and the Guacamole En Molcajete ($9.99) which is prepared with fresh avocados right at your table. All of the Mexican dishes are priced under $15. They have a good variety of wines by the glass at $6 & $7 and bottles priced between $20 and

    $24.

They are not in the Entertainment Book but rather have chosen to reward their repeat customers with a Royalty Rewards card that tracks your purchases and rebates 5% of your spending in a $10 certificate automatically mailed to you for every $200 you spend at the restaurant. Plus every so often they send you a certificate for a free appetizer or dessert. Just a nice

way to say thanks for your business.

Finally, I’d like to say that Lenahan & Lopez has donated gift certificates for dinner the past two Holiday Raffles in support of the club. So let’s return the favor and support them the next time you find yourself in northern Dutchess at the Upstate Films Theater, shopping in Rhinebeck or at the Dutchess County Fair. Those of us that live in Kingston and northern Dutchess should make this restaurant a habit

    like Pat and I have.

  • Skiing Pets Around the World

Now that the crocus are starting to bud and the ski season is being eclipsed by the approaching spring,

remember our sister nations below the equator. While our winter fades away, the South

    American and Australian winter approaches.

Not many of us will be heading for the mountains of Chile and Peru, nor are we likely to ski the heights of Queensland and the Southern Alps of New Zealand (the most amazing glacial skiing imaginable!)

But we can share in some of the joy of our fellow skiers in other lands. Everyone has seen the parrot at Stratton flying above its owner's

    shoulder and every skier

has heard of the famous skiing dogs at Heavenly and Squaw Valley.

Many people I've talked to have even read about the kangaroos in Queensland which have been trained to ski slalom gates.

But the most recent pets to join the ranks of alpine skiing are the llamas of Peru! According to an article by Una Sincero in

"Ski Life Magazine", the latest fad in the mountains of Peru is to strap two extremely long skis (each made by splicing a pair of skis) to the feet of Peruvian llama and let gravity take its course. The llama seem to take quite naturally to the

    snow.

Although the article does not report that anyone has been seen riding the llama down the slopes, it does seem like the next logical thing to do.

    Page 6 HVSC

Jackson Hole Wyoming was very receptive to our Club – again. Although the temperature was very cold before our arrival, it heated up quickly. Maybe WE are to blame! By the end of the week, the conditions may have been the cause of the broken collarbones for Joyce Mongero on Friday morning and John Macek on

Friday afternoon. We hope their recovery is swift.

One evening the 49er Motel was gracious as the host of an Elk dinner and a “thanks for returning” cake. Other evenings we could be found on the dance floor or saddles at the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar or the Snake River Brewery. The town is full of many wonderful restaurants and shops for every taste

    and budget.

When the group wasn’t skiing, the day off was diverse with trips to Old Faithful (where we were 5 feet from Bison), the Elk Refuge & Museum; dog sledding and a sleigh ride to a log cabin restaurant in the woods. Oh yes, I even did the pilot parachute

glide from the top of Grand Targhee.

Thanks to all travelers (duckies) who helped make this a

    wonderful trip.

JAY PEAK, Vermont 4 day bus trip

    March 22-25

    Cost: $560

We will be staying at Hotel Jay at the base of the mountain. This trip includes 3 nights lodging, 3 day lift ticket, 3 breakfasts, 2 dinners, one lesson and round trip

    transportation.

Mother Nature is very good to Jay Peak. Because of the mountain’s unique location and geographical features, we get more snow than anywhere else in New England (twice as much as many resorts). Put that together with our 2,000-ft. vertical, massive glade system and the only aerial tram in Vermont, and you have one unique resort.
